If you have the choice, don't ever turn down a McGraw-Hill reference material. Recently, I wanted to check to see that my grammatical skills are up-to-date. I first chose a few other grammar books. They were helpful and added some additional commentary, but I really found them to be much too condensed. I recently read "The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage." I wanted to address some of my problem areas, such as who vs. whom and lie vs. lay. This book is comprehensive and provides you with actual tests, techniques, and thorough explanations that you can then apply to choose the correct answers, while extending your grammatical vocabulary at the same time. Sure, other grammar books may say the same thing, but they may not provide the same detail or clarity. Now I know: "Lie" is intransitive and "lay" is transitive. You may want to get a grammar workbook after studying this handbook to apply what you have learned. I haven't seen all of the grammar books on the market so I am sure there are some other great ones. But out of the few I've read recently, I found this one to be the most comprehensive and helpful. The language and explanations just spoke to me.
I’m really surprised by the high ratings for this book. Yes, there’s a lot of information in this book; however, I’m afraid they’ve made it overly confusing. I’m an editor who is very familiar with the concepts and terms presented in this book, and found myself lost and confused. When I didn’t understand what it was saying I would go to an online resource (Grammar Girl or OWL) and my questions were answered clearly and immediately.Not only is the language a little unclear, but the layout isn’t great. Half the words are bolded (they can’t all be important!) and there are no topic sentences. The book doesn’t always just simply define the term, which is incredibly frustrating.
It isn't a book I read from beginning to end - but I refer to it when I have a specific question. I also like the book The Only Grammar Book You'll Ever Need by Susan Thurman. I use them both frequently.
I bought this e-book assuming that it includes over 160 exercises however I could not find any in my installed e-book and when I referred back to the seller 2 weeks ago they promised that someone will re-contact me in a week after checking my problem but unfortunately no one called me back in these 2 weeks since I reported my issue

Hot damn I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! Carpenter had me guessing and twisted until the very last line on the last page. Honestly, I don't recall a thriller like this one ever....one I had absolutely no idea how to solve and turning turning turning pages for more Intel, which Carpenter doles out like a master. Just enough to keep you obsessively turning. I loved the research on the Indian history. I loved the setting: gothic south. I LOVED the Ambletern, creepy huge inn on a southern island. Moss dripping trees. Wild horses. Beach. Seashells. Old ruins on the island. And Super HOT HOT Koa, who I wanted to jump into the book and kiss myself. But the even better stuff is this, Carpenter, in a stroke of pure genius, weaves throughout the main story, a 1970's cult horror, named KITTEN. KITTEN is a horror story told in snippets throughout, and even though in snippets, I was equally as riveted by it as I was for the main story. And the backstory of how the world made KITTEN a cult sensation, and generated "KITTY Cultists"....well, I "got" that. It wasn't just a fact you had to accept. You could see why world readers became enthralled with KITTEN and why there were KITTY Cultists. I too am a Kitty Cultist. Brava!!!!
Emily Carpenter has a gift for spinning spooky Southern tales of families gone wrong. THE WEIGHT OF LIES was beautifully (and creepily) crafted.The train wreck of a relationship between Meg and Frances Ashley was hard to look away from, and the snippets of Kitten that were woven into the story made me wish that I could read that in real life.I could not put this book down. The Weight of Lies kept me guessing until the end, and was well worth the night of sleep I lost reading it!
Oh, this novel is so fun! It is a book within a book: Kitten, Ashely Frances' 1970s horror novel that turned into a massive best seller, and The Weight of Lies, a novel about Ashley Frances' daughter Meg, who is writing a memoir about growing up in the shadow of both Kitten and Ashley Frances. It's set on an island in Georgia that has a herd of wild horses, builds suspense and intrigue, plus a whole lot of Kitten fandom, including Kitty Cultist conspiracy theories. The ending was a bit insane, but I had so much fun falling for a world where Kitten is the best horror novel of the past 40 years, and Kitty Cultists build websites and bars dedicated to the lore of Kitten.
I just love a good mystery/thriller and Carpenter's THE WEIGHT OF LIES delivers in every way. Meg Ashley, the protagonist, is a flawed but sympathetic character who travels to a remote island off the coast of Georgia. She is there to solve a decades-old murder mystery that her estranged mother fictionalized in a novel that became a bestselling cult classic.The setting is perfectly creepy and atmospheric. The cast of characters are so well drawn- they are all interesting, imperfect and believable. Some of these characters have motives of their own regarding the mystery and you are constantly wondering who Meg can trust and who she should stay far away from. This story is a page-turner that will keep you guessing until the very end - what more can you ask for in a mystery? Oh - bonus points for the dose of romance thrown in for good measure!If I could give it more than 5 stars I would - definitely add THE WEIGHT OF LIES to your "must read" list!

Meg is ready to boil over with a lifetime of impatience with unsatisfied love in her relationship with her mother when she is confronted with an interesting prospect: the opportunity to write a tell-all. Doing so means that she is compiling facts to unveil the mysteries of her own parentage at the same time that she reads, for the first time, the iconic murder mystery that gained her mother bestselling fame and wealth. For all the modernity of Meg's character, the novel is rich with the kind of classic mystique that had Hitchcock so gripped with the novels of Daphne du Maurier. I rounded my rating up to 4 but really I would give it a 3.7.The thing is I really enjoyed the story and the concept. It definitely has some similarities to The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness and I liked that about it. I liked the tie to ancient Egypt and the different gods.The thing is, I was all in through almost the entire series until the last maybe couple chapters of the final book. I just feel so unbelievably cheated and I feel like Lex was robbed. The last bit feels so rushed and thrown together and I’m sure there was a lot of thought put into but it left me just so unsatisfied.The story and concepts really are entertaining but I just say be prepared for the ending.
I really enjoyed the first book in this trilogy. The second book started to get a tad too convoluted for my taste, but by then I was thoroughly involved with the characters. I'm sorry to say, however, that the third book was a disappointment. For me, it seemed rushed and confused. The ending was anti-climatic and didn't resolve things well enough. There is a good reason for that--there's another series that continues with Kat being the focus.Even though time travel is not my favorite thing in a plot, I do give the Author a lot of credit for her wandering and complex timeline in this series. The sometimes locale (Egypt) was wonderful. I really liked the characters. The 3 books together made for a long read, and yet I never wanted to quit reading. I was hoping for an epic finish, though--which I didn't get. Kat was far from my favorite character in this series, and therefore I'm not pleased that she's the main character in the next, continuing series (the Kat Dubois Chronicles).Because this series ended (for me) on a sour note, I'm hoping that all loose ends will be resolved in the next series. I will read that series, but I'm going to need a break..... in order to get the taste of this trilogy's ending out of my mouth first. 3-1/2 Stars--I would have rounded upwards to 4 had the ending (?) made me happy.
Nearly done with the whole trilogy and it hasnt even been a week Ive been that captivated. I am super impressed at how well layed out the story is, the elegant word choice, the research that mustve been done for writing this, and the steamy scenes ;) . Absolutely fantastic and if i ever find it printed I shall buy them all. Fantasticly done Ms. Fairleigh very impressed. Keep up the amazing work!
I found this series really easy and enjoyable to get into. Each chapter left me wanting to read the next, but the final book totally fizzled towards the end. It felt like the author lost direction and focus. Too much time spent from the point of view of secondary characters with the main characters fading into the background, presumably with the aim of drawing people into the next series. This series started as Lex’s journey and should have ended that way but instead there were nothing but gaping holes and hives questions in books 3. Almost like the author couldn’t figure out how to end this series whilst still leaving herself an opening for a spin-off. I read the first two books and both novellas in 2 days but it took me closer to a week to force my way through the final book. Complete anticlimax to what started out as a very promising series.
Even though you know that, in the end, our heroine must be successful, the getting there is still full of excitement, sorrow, twists and turns.
Absolutely, without a doubt, one of the most fantastic stories that I have ever read. I could barely put this thing down! If you have any sort of love of Egyptian mythology, stories with prophesies, and time travel, then you have found your destination. Lex is a completely relatable "hero" in this story and the love felt between her and Heru will warm you all the way to your soul. There is entirely to much for me to say about the way this story made me feel, unfortunately it may give to much away so I will leave it with this....do yourself a favor and read it :)
It only took a few chapters read in in book one and I knew I was hooked. The imagination Lindsey Fairleigh has is spectacular. I read on a Kindle, but I wish this trilogy was in book form. Definitely will look for Kat's book next. Thank you Lindsey!
Lindsey Fairleigh is a new author to me but I will buy books by her again because I enjoyed the Echo Trilogy so much. She is an excellent writer and she created an excellent set of characters and story line. Try it, Ms. Fairleigh will not disappoint.

Overall this book is worth the read if you are truly interested in learning how to learn - which in my opinion 100% of people should actively work to understand better.You do not need a deep understanding of cognitive functionality or brain anatomy to follow this book. It is simple, straight forward, and is a useful technique to be familiar with and to me can be applied (and should be applied) to every component of your lifestyle. But keep in mind - you should always be looking for ways to individualize and improve the approach Tony instructs.The reason it gets three stars:At around p.56 I was overcome with excitement to understand the intricate techniques of expressing my mind which Tony expresses very well. But than I came back to Amazon and decided to do something I have not done yet - Read the 1 star Reviews. After reading it for this book I re-designed my approach on acquiring books to better my understanding of reality and how to continually improve myself.It was very eye opening the professional and respective insights peers gave around this book which I forever thank and owe my debt to them as it altered my perception of this book.Most to all of his research can be somewhat viewed as scientifically incorrect - but in all fairness - this book was written between the 1970-2000 time period and neurology itself is very young in its development and research. So of course the science he is presenting will be debunked and re-theorized.But what you need to take away from this book is that it is a basic foundation of how to utilize your mind. At the moment I am still continually searching for other mnemonic and neurological approaches to better enhancing the efficacy of my study & research. But this was a good novice guidance in the correct direction whereas prior I was a little misguided and sporadic in my studies.Another big - HUGE to me personally - deficit is that a 1-star review commented that "Tony is a dubious salesman" and right away my mind was on high-alert for the evidence throughout his writing. I do not enjoy the pursuit of taking advantage of individuals for self-gain. This phrase in relation to Tony - he could possibly be selling something to make himself a profit at the cost of someone investing good time and hard work into a practice that may be flawed.This practice has its flaws and they are easily able to adjust (much like other practices) so he does genuinely have good intentions and to me comes off as an individual who enjoys assisting others to be more efficient humans.What is really noticeable is that ALL his recommendations throughout the book are books he wrote. For example:p 213 2nd paragraph - (see the Edward Hughes story in Tony Buzan, Use Your Head, Chapter 1, pages 11-14).This to me is a sales ploy as he understands you are interested in this book so much - that he wants you to continually purchase all his books. And he only ever makes references to books that he wrote. Also articles of research from time to time. And it is a frequent event throughout the book and I feel as though he is informing me "In case you forgot, you could expand your knowledge on this specific topic by purchasing my other book". Sales in itself really bothers me - sweet irony is that I currently work as a Sales Support Rep :(.In contrast some other exemplary books I have read (Clean - by Dr Alejandro Junger) reference a plethora of outside sources that have nothing to do with his own self-benefit. They are just authors and articles he was inspired and influenced by to generate the type of advice he is offering.The only time he does not do this somewhat is on p 217 where he references a book by Lana Israel - But he did co-write this book himself (keep in mind I am only on p 233 at this writing).Of course this is all only my opinion and I am an extremist when it comes to encouraging constructive feedback (or just straight criticism) so please share your thoughts and hopefully I did not offend anyone. But by all means send me a response of any type of intelligent feedback and I will not be offended.Hope this helps you with your purchase! Enjoy your pursuit of knowledge acquisition!

I've used Mind-mapping for several years in my high school English classes. Most students love it. It's a great way for students to discover what they know in an engaging way, and it's a valid assessment, too. I use this book and Mr. Buzan's instructional videos on Youtube to get students started. Once they try it, many students are eager to apply Mind -mapping to other classes, such as Chemistry and History and Math. Other teachers are also fond of this process, and they appreciate the wisdom in it. Thank you, Tony!
A nice supplement to your array of books that purport to have new ideas about your having ideas. If you don't know this technique, get the book. A little wordy for the premise, but the premise is good.
Now, the book as a whole is part concept and part application. I will be honest and say that I only skimmed through the concept part as I have read other literature on Buzman and Mind Mapping. What I loved about this book was the application for teachers at the end. My honors English class really excelled at using a Mind Map to detail The Great Gatsby and when I showed it to my superintendent, she was impressed. Thank you Tony!

This book is a very good overview for anyone interested in the symbolic / sacred aspects of what one experiences at an Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy. It also gives historical background on the practices and insight as to the development of the Liturgy in it's current form. As a history buff, and a recent convert from Roman Catholicism, I plan to keep referring to this book in the future as I continue to dig deeper into this wonderful and ancient religion.
This was not the easiest read but was very informative. Thankfully I am reading this with a study group so it helps to better understand. The book contains a lot of interesting facts that I would not otherwise know. Overall I recommend reading it.
Excellent book. As a recent convert to the Orthodox faith I found this book very helpful in explaining the meaning and reasons behind the different sections of the Divine Liturgy. Lots of details without being a hard read. I highly recommend to anyone looking for more information to answer the "why do we do that?" sort of questions regarding things done during the Liturgy.
If you are curious about the Orthodox worship service and what is going on during it, this well written book does a great job of explaining it and is very informative. It's a good read for someone who has just discovered the Orthodox Christian faith.
This is a great book, especially for laity, to discover just what is going on during the service. It does not cover a line by line teaching, but gives details of each event.It is very nicely written and easy to follow by newbies and experienced.
