Just received the book this morning and read it already. The book has great illustrations, and is hardcover and It does a good job of explaining what takes place in the care and feeding of a plant at the cellular level. It explains some basic chemistry to help with understanding the technical side of how this happens.It does mention soil testing and shows a sample soil test. There is no explanations as to how to figure what quantities to add to one's soil to amend it. Perhaps I misunderstood what the book was suppose to be about.If you want the rest of the story, which gives you the understanding of how this chemistry is utilized in a very well explained manner, and how to use soil test results to determine what a soil needs, and how to determine these quantities through filling out a step by step well explained worksheet and applying basic math, then I would recommend "The Intelligent Gardener" by Steve Solomon and Erica Reinheimer.In short,Jeff's book is an explanation, utilizing the principles of chemistry to demonstrate how plants take on nutrition and develop at a cellular level, while Steve and Erica's book is about this and also adds the practical side of how to calculate which and how much of each amendment to use to bring the deficiencies found through soil sampling, to an acceptable nutritious level for human consumption. I would read 'Teaming with Microbes' first. After reading that you will never look at your garden or any plant the same way again. This is a great follow up, but it is a more difficult read. There is a great deal of biology and plant anatomy in the first half of the book. Don't skip it, but don't dwell on it. Plant biology is much more complicated than rocket science on a molecular level, so just try to grasp the general concepts. You can come back later to refresh. Take in what you can and push forward. The only thing I would do differently is to buy the hardback instead of the e-book.
Skip the first two chapters of the book of you come from a science background or completed one semester of bio and chem in college. I should have done this it might have made the book more enjoyable to ready. I was blown away reading Teaming With Microbes and disappointed reading teaming with nutrients.
Great writer, I bought this because I liked the way he makes reading about soil fun and interesting. His previous book Teaming with microbes he made a difficult subject easy to understand. You can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching you I would most definatly recommend this and Teaming with microbes as a must read for any Gardner or people interested in healthy food and soil.
This book is full of info but it reads like a college textbook. I swear I felt like I was back in school again. It probably has more info than is required to understand how plants uptake nutrients. If you want to relearn botany again, definitely read this book.
I wish this book had been around when I was growing up! It has opened up a whole new vision of the way that life works to me. I have been reading a little everyday just to grock the fundamentals but then I keep getting turned on to new concepts that make me want to never put it down!Thank you Jeff Lowenfels for renewing my fascination for nature and her beautiful intricacies.
Very well written tons of information but still has a good flow to get you through some of the meatier areas. He dose a great job of taking something complicated and breaking it down to smaller easier to digest sections that all build upon each other. I recommend this book if your serious about agriculture demystify what the fertilizer companies try to keep under wraps for there own gain. My favorite part was discovering the 17 essential elements for plant to live and reproduce, worth the time!
Some good technical information. More detailed than the average gardening book - by and prayer of magnitude. A bit haphazard in organization resulting in a lot of repetition and some confusion. But some hard core information. Good explanations for the value of soil amendment.

We have started to implement almost everything in her book and can’t wait until the fall 2018 release of her latest book. If you are a newbie to chicken raising and want solid time tested accurate advise and instruction BUY THIS BOOK!
Great book... this is useful for a first time chicken owner but it certainly isn't a "beginner's guide." It's pretty in-depth, but short and easy to read. You *may* want to check out some of the more basic info on her website too if you're a complete beginner.I like that the book focuses on natural treatments and setups for the chickens. I like the idea of avoiding expensive vet bills and chemicals in my birds/yard. I particularly like all of the suggestions for herbs to add to their coop and feed, recipes for chicken food, and natural treatments for common problems.I'm reading her other book, Duck Eggs Daily, too and I ended up deciding on ducks instead due to the setup of my yard and neighborhood. Of course, I'm keeping this book "just in case" I end up with ducks and chickens at some point because I hear that's how it works.
Great book! I had never raised chickens before and anyone who is thinking about it or has chickens needs to get this book! My hens years old now and raised range free with a large coop and lovely little hen laying house with lots of windows! Never could have made it though the first year without this book!!!!!
I ordered this book from Amazon in May, 2016. At that point, I had been keeping a flock of 10-15 chickens for about 4 years and was following Lisa’s blog. I decided to get the book because there were topics that I would research on a regular basis – how to cool off chickens in the summer, how to prep the coop for the winter, natural deworming recipe, coop cleaner spray, herb use (for laying, for health, etc). All of this information and much more is in this book! My copy is dog eared, marked with post-its, and bookmarks and was signed by Lisa when I met her at a local event. I highly recommend this book to new and experienced chicken keepers.
I love this book! It’s my “go to†for so many aspects of chicken keeping. The gentle, natural approach has helped guide me through raising two small groups of backyard hens. I am now on my third group (my older hens are going strong), and keep returning to this book for tips. Great book, great website, and honest, realistic approach to keeping chickens. Highly recommend.
The negative reviews on this book are clearly written by people who have been asked to write nasty reviews from another "author". It's so obvious. A shame they are allowed. But the true professional and the one with the true knowledge is the Author, Lisa Steele. She is kind and well educated on raising chickens, chicks, ducks, gardening, etc. This is a great book, as are all of her other- books. Follow her on Instragram and Facebook. You will not be dissapointed.
This is a fantastic book! Lisa Steele cares a lot for her birds and wants to give them only the best. The chapters are informative and well written with many recipes using natural products to boost their immune systems and keep a healthy flock without the use of chemicals or antibiotics. Her goal is to be preventative and proactive when it comes to her birds. I enjoyed reading this book and even bought one for a friend as a gift!
This book is a gift for a friend for a friend of mine who has just gotten chickens for the first time but, I've gone through all of it & I don't even have chickens & loved the info in it. It isn't a really long book but has Lots of info in it..I think it's a great book for beginners of chicken rearers. A great read.

The Cato & Macro series are wonderful stories, each one spinning a different yarn around historic campaigns of the Roman Legionairies. Scarrow is an excellent story-teller and has created two very different but colorful characters in Cato & Macro. I have been following the series on my Kindle, but was chagrined to discover Book 7 is not available on Kindle. That came as quite a disappointment. I had to obtain a hard bound used copy of Book 7 from Britain. I have found no explanation for this gap in the series on Amazon. Having said that, I would recommend this series to any fan of historical fiction. I think Scarrow is a superior writer to Bernard Cornwell whose works I have long cherished and enjoyed. Give Cato & Macro a try. This series will keep you turning the pages.

This is near the end game of the Roman conquest of Briton. This is an engaging story that pulls no punches in terms of the realism concerning the conduct of the Roman and British armies. Neither gives any quarter to the other. There is plenty of action in this novel and it holds the reader's interest throughout. Young Centurion Cato continues to mature as a man and as a complex character, in contrast to the stolid, competent Macro, who while less complex, nonetheless remains a nuanced and interesting character, almost the perfect Centurion.This is a solid fourth installment in this excellent series and is not to be missed. This is a series that just keeps getting better and better. The author does a tremendous job recreating the time period, and the authenticity of not only the battles, but the dreary march/camp life is top-notch. The personalities of every character boldly stand out--from the King (Verica) down to the common farmer/soldier/beggar--Scarrow breathes vibrant life into everyone. I'm in for the duration!
Fourh book in Roman historical fiction series. This story more interesting and complicated than the previous books in the series. As usual, the characters are interesting and the battle scenarios bloody and exciting. I will continue reading the next book.
Simon Scarrow is great at what he does and that's all that can be said. If you’re going to read this then make sure you get the full picture and story by starting with the first book of the series. Is a long series but he never duplicates plots even though he uses the same characters and basically same place and time. Well worth a read.

Excellent reading on the Roman Empire. Fast paced and gives an excellent idea as to times of the Roman Empire. Author knows his business, both historical as well as writing ability.
I have always had an interest in the Roman Empire and the amazing (and unfortunately sometimes savage) way in which it went about it's business. You can feel yourself drawn back in time with Simon Scarrow's characters Cato and Macro, from the battle scenes, which are increasingly described in great detail but without going overboard in the depth, to life within a Roman Legion either on the Campaign trail or on hiatus in any number of locations. A sense of realism woven within the fabric of the intrigue, character development and storylines leaves you with no option but to keep reading until you've finished the book, and then , you're left wanting more.I was hooked from the first book, Under the Eagle, and am currently having a hard time putting down The Eagle in the Sand.Thank you Simon Scarrow.
