This is the convoluted and tedious love story of Julia and Lord Damon, Marquis Savage and Duke of Leeds. They were bound in marriage at age 4 and 7; and now they are adults; but Julia has become a noted stage actress at the Capital Theater in London; and Damon believes he wants this actress as his mistress b/c he has little desire for the obscure wife his family selected for him. The premise could have been clever b/c his wife and the actress are one and the same, and something fun might have been made of it; but it wasn't. I wish all of this was believable and handled well; but it bogs several times and sputters to the end. The only question is how will Lisa Kleypas handle the mystery's solution? Pauline is a caricature of every mistress ever to grace the pages of a romance novel. She was strident, stupid, and boring. As Book 1 in the series, it does introduce characters who are central to the plot of the brilliant novel, BECAUSE YOU'RE MINE, which is Book 2 in this series. We meet Julia, Logan Scott, Nell Florence, and Arlyss, an actress at the Capital Theater - which is Logan's raison d'etre and great opus in life. We also get a glimpse of and meet the type of female that Logan prefers as a lover in this book - voluptuous, married, and calculating - a counterpoint to the woman who will soon claim Logan Scott's heart in Book 2 (I will not give that delicious secret away!) Other reviewers have mentioned a ripple of attraction between Julia and Logan in this novel; however, I failed to see it as anything more than Scott's effort to secure his theater's status and ensure its future. We are meant to accept the notion that he is a man driven by little more than his desire to succeed and shape all around him as an all-controlling and invulnerable human being. This book rates a 2.5 star rating, which Amazon does not allow for; but do read the brilliant Book 2 in the series. Amazon does not even offer a sufficiently high rating for that gem of a book!!!

FINAL DECISION: A different type of story about child marriages, a marchioness turned actress and two people who have to learn to compromise. Don't read this if you are going to nitpick the story.THE STORY: Julia is an actress who has finally gotten a position in a respectable theater. She is living her dream of independence. Her heart stays her own, and she has a big secret. Damon, Marquess of Savage is searching for the bride his father married him to as a child. The heiress has fled her family. Damon is shocked to find out that the woman he has been married to for years is none other than the actress he wanted for his mistress.OPINION: I really enjoyed this book. Is it unrealistic? perhaps, but if you regularly read my reviews you should know that I will forgive a lot of historical inaccuracies, plot holes, grammatical errors, etc for a good story with characters that I fall in love with. Does it seem reasonable that a aristocratic woman would abandon her family, become an actress and eventually become a duchess. Maybe not, but this is one great story anyway.Julia is a woman who wants to make her own independent decisions. If she was born in modern times, she would fit right in, but in her times, she is disinherited by her father and on the run from her "husband". Is she too obsessed with her independence? Perhaps it seems so to our modern sensibilities, but in her time, when men owned their wives, is it unreasonable to be worried about losing your independence when your husband could control everything that you could do? Or when your father could marry you off when you are a little child. I loved how Kleypas brings the opposing forces of Julia and Damon each wanting control. After both were stripped of control by their parents each wants to be in total control of their lives.Damon has made himself into a completely responsible predictable gentleman because his father was irresponsible -- resulting in Damon being offered in marriage to Julia (when both were small children) in order to save the family coffers. The lesson Damon learned from that was that he needed to control his circumstances. He struggles with Julia who will not submit to his control. Even worse, he ultimately realizes that she would not be the Julia he falls in love with if she did.The story of how Julia and Damon navigate their desire for control and their trust issues was what kept me turning pages. The characters sparkled off the pages, their pain and struggle and intense attraction to one another kept me interested until the very end.The secondary characters also were full of life. The best story is one where I could imagine all the relationships and intrigues involved and this one does a great job at that.I only took of a star because I have read better books by Kleypas, so I know that she has pushed these boundaries even further with even better characters. I can't wait for the next book about Logan Scott. He's got some story.WORTH MENTIONING: I loved the epilogue which was necessary for this book to show how these two adapted to one another and continued to evolve their relationship.CONNECTED BOOKS: SOMEWHERE I'LL FIND YOU is the first book in the Capital Theatre series.STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

SOMEWHERE I'LL FIND YOU is book one in the Capital Theatre series and was originally released in 1996. I love Lisa Kleypas and wish I could say the same for this book, but its one of the handful written by her that I just thought was okay. The plot and setting are interesting and revolve around Lord Damon Savage searching for the stranger his parents wed him to as a child, and Julia Wentworth, a rising actress in the 1820s world of theatre. I understood the heroine's independent nature and ambition, which I could relate to. The hero on the other hand was the strong, silent type and kind of hard to read at times. While I liked them both neither ever really tugged at my heart. There's also a bit of insta-love since Damon pretty much falls for Julia at first sight, while she was a harder sell. In the end however this story never really pulled me in and I felt like it was missing something. It took me three days to finish instead of my usual one and I'm glad I read it, but sorry to say I'll not likely read it again.

I had to keep reminding myself to stay on the surface with this book. Another reviewer had warned of the farfetched storyline but because it is written by my favorite historical romance author i bought it anyway. Why couldn't she just stayed with the premise that they were married as children, hated the idea and went with from there with a more believable conflict?I must admit that I barely liked this book, but am hoping that the next in the series is better. I read that this was one of Lisa's earlier novels. I'm happy to say she got better with time. Her later books are why I'm so loyal! Most of the elements that are missing in this book, she perfected in her later novel. Well, on to the next one!

Life with the Ojibbways on the Canadian frontier in the late 1700's and early 1800's was no picnic, as this guy can testify. What confounds me is the number of times he feeds his starving family and the starving group he may be with at the moment, and gets nothing but abuse in return. They steal his horse, attempt to murder him, steal his children, steal his goods, steal his furs, and on and on. Yet he restrains himself and continually invites further abuse.Anyone with a lesser constitution would have succumbed early on, but Tanner survives it for decades, but finally disappears mysteriously. Fascinating reading, but you have to wonder why he didn't fight back more than he did.The numerous trips by canoe and portage back and forth between the far points of the Great Lakes and Manitoba are treated lightly, as if the trips were no big deal. One wishes he would have been more descriptive of the routes and the hardships endured.

This book was required for my American Lit class. It's not the genre I would normally read, but I found Tanner's autobiography (or biography, since he didn't write it himself, but dictated it to a ghost writer) fascinating. I could have rented it from my college, but I liked it enough to want a copy for my personal library. "The Falcon" is an account of life among early 1800's American Indians--their lifestyle and culture--from the perspective of a captive (Tanner) who not only adapts, but embraces them as his own. It begins with his kidnapping and ends with his return to the white man's world thirty years later. It's not a thrill-a-minute adventure (though most assuredly an adventure), but a true picture of life among the Ojibbeway Indians. If Colonial-period history, Indians, and captivity stories are of interest to you, I highly recommend this book.

This is a rare and interesting look at how Northern Indians lived in the early 1800's as told by someone who lived with them for 30 years.

Great copy of Tanner's autobiography. Great record of life as a Native American without all the modern re-write of today.

Shipping was fast. Price was good, and its about a relative!!

one of the greatest indian stories I have read. This white man was captured by the indians in the 1820's and spent many years living in a tribe. He married and had children. Then ,returned to his remaining white family.

Super service and a great read.

just read the first chapter, saving it for summer reading next year when we are canoe camping, sounds really great so far, what a crazy life

It has all of the information needed to track down Morse locations in Oxford plus some useful facts. The pictures and illustrations are not very good quality though, and there is a typo in the middle of the back cover (hstorical) which would have attracted a barbed comment from Morse. OK for the price of a used copy though (or new Amazon Prime for about the same price).

I gave this as a gift to my brother. We are getting ready to visit Oxford and are huge Morse and Lewis fans, so I knew when I saw it that he would love this book. It's great! It gives info on the places where the different episodes were shot and even provides you with a walking tour that will allow you to see them for yourself. It's a great little book.

Great resources for information for our trip on the Queen Mary 2 and the Road Scholar program "The Game is Afoot!, The English Murder Mystery Tradition" program. We'll have some knowledge of Oxford and Inspector Morse long before we arrive.

Very pleased with book and seller.

this is great...anything to do with the series it a treasure

Oh, no. How can I be such a fan that I'd order this book? Well, I am and have filled it with post-it tags to help me keep ideas in mind for when I go there. Not an exciting book but definitely informative. I bought the book but may buy the Kindle version when I go to Oxford because I like the idea of having it on my Kindle rather than holding onto the book when I travel. That's how helpful this has proven to be for me.

I'm going to preface this by saying that I am a huge fan of Sarah J. Maas. Her writing is great. Her stories are intriguing and filled with adventure and danger and secrets and magic and friendship and love. They're highly entertaining, emotional, and grapple with big ideas. Are they without flaw? No. But I never thought I'd give a piece of her writing less than four stars. But here we are.I really wanted to love Frost & Starlight with the same boundless vigor that I give the original trilogy. But I just...didn't. To be honest, I'm weirded out. This is new territory for me.A Court of Frost and Starlight is a novella, clocking in at 229 pages, with a 20 page sneak peek at the next full-length book of the Court series, which has no set publication date at this time. From the beginning, it has been marketed as a bridge between the original trilogy and the spinoff series. Set in the Night Court over the Winter Solstice, it is, according to the jacket copy, a "tale of hope and promise" crammed with character development that will have a "far-reaching impact on the future of [the] court."I'm aware of this. I know there's only so much a writer can accomplish in 229 pages. I did not expect anything on the same level of her full-length novels. Part of me likes the domestic fanfiction-y vibe a majority of the book embraces. Emotionally-driven characters have been a staple and a strength of this series from the beginning. It's not a bad read. It's just not...a necessary read. Are there important plot elements introduced that lay groundwork for the spinoff series? Sure!Did they require an entire novella to set them up? Nope!I think my reaction is so lackluster because, to me, there wasn't anything major to react to. The most exciting part was the 20 page sneak peek, which made me shriek and hug things and wonder when the first spinoff novel would actually come out, because I want that book. That book is going to shake me up.But honestly? I was happy with where A Court of Wings & Ruin left everyone. I don't think I needed Frost & Starlight to hold my hand and lead me towards the next trilogy.Honestly, Frost & Starlight felt kind of like fan service. It gave us the highly anticipated wall scene (which my asexual ass skimmed through) but other than that?I acknowledge that there's no way to properly judge the success and relevance of Frost & Starlight as a bridge between series until we have Spinoff #1 in our hands. But I have this feeling that, down the road when both Court trilogies are on my shelf, Frost & Starlight will join Crown of Midnight in the "books that I skip over during rereads" category. Now, I still respect Sarah J. Maas, madly and wildly. She's a grown-ass writer who can make her own grown-ass choices about what she writes and what she chooses to publish. Am I mad that she published it? No. Am I judging other fans who really loved it? Hell no! It's not policy for me to shame anyone for liking what they like. But I would be doing myself and my brand a disservice by not reviewing honestly, so here we are.A Court of Frost & Starlight simmers with promises, but foreshadowed more than it actually delivered.

Being a fan of both TOG and ACOTAR, I was excited and looking forward to another great read. Sadly, I was deeply disappointed with this book. I understand wanting to bridge the new series (one I will definitely be reading), but this book felt pointless. Upon finishing the book, I felt like I had just read the most lengthy and long-winded prologue ever. I’m sorry, but even as a SJ fan I’d have to say skip this book and wait until the new series :-(

I would call spoiler alert, but really this is more like a list of non-spoilers. As in, here is a list (in no particular order) of subplots that are introduced in the second and third installments that are not resolved in this book. Lucien and Tamlin, still at odds. Lucien and Elain, still awkward. Elain and Azriel, no real advancement. Nesta and Cassian, further apart. Bryaxis, still at large. Nesta’s strangeness, about to be explored when Hybern’s Ravens attacked the library, unexplained and deepened. Mor, still alone and unfulfilled. Eris, whose character hinted previously as having some redemptive possibilities, untouched. Helion’s role as Lucien’s true father, also untouched. Treaty between Fae and human, unsettled. Jurian and Vassa, closer buddies now with Lucien, but again, no developments. No meat really in this book, and the reviews that mention its resemblance to fan fiction? Spot on. Lots of window dressing, like “here are all the pretty things we can buy with all our money and sumptuous gowns we can wear and seaside houses we can live in” ... really like playing dolls with familiar characters.Hugely disappointed to have waited a year for this; I’d have much preferred waiting two years and gotten a fourth installment of substance. If this was to satisfy a publisher’s quota, they truly did Ms. Maas and her fans a disservice. Finally, to pay $9 for a book that’s a third of the length of its predecessors is just adding insult to injury.

I love Maas and avidly devoure her writing. This is my favorite series and is near to my heart. But, This book and its lackluster storyline (if you want to call it as such) makes me wonder.I’ve never imagined giving any of Maas’ books under 4 stars. I genuinely feel like this was a feel good money grab. I’m not sure if that’s really all it was, because calling it a novella feels like a gross overstatement. Or, maybe Maas is simply being pressured to produce too much in too little time.Save yourself the money and find a copy of the 20 page preview for the next installment. I promise that’s worth sinking your teeth into.

I was so disappointed by this 4th installment of the quite enjoyable Court of Thorns and Roses saga. The whole book was nothing but the filler you’d expect to find between the action and suspense. We all know how Rhys and Feyre feel about each other, Nesta’s whining, Elian’s fragile innocence, Cassians brooding over Nesta, Lucien’s, well...I don’t know what’s up with Lucien, Etc, etc, etc. This book was thoroughly a waste of time and money.

An entertaining peek into the lives of characters we love. I'm a newcomer to this world, only discovering A Court of Thorns and Roses 2 months ago. Since then I've inhaled the original trilogy and devoured this novella in the last 24 hours. I thought I would be annoyed by multiple points of view (2 of them 1st person), however, it was thoroughly enjoyable and completely works as long as you remember what this novella/novelette is: a short story whose purpose is to lay the groundwork for some hopefully action-packed full-length novels to come. I feel like this also gave me some resolutions for Rhys and Feyre that the last book lacked (I won't spoil them for you, but it was satisfying to see for those who felt like those 2 had some more work to do). All in all, I'm glad I bought it and look forward to rereading all 4 books again!

This is a fairly quick read and if you haven’t done much reading around productivity and focus, you **need** to read this book. It’s going to give you the best primer around on getting focused, and staying focused in the midst of distraction. It’s going to give you a good look at how to choose the most important task.If you’ve read books like The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results,Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World,The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 Months then you may feel like this book barely scratches the surface of the topics. In that case, head to the library and read the Conclusion of the book. It summarizes every point for you. Then you can decide if you need to invest the time to read the whole book.

I'm the king of procrastination, and I needed this book to help me get out of my rut. It was suggested by a friend, and quite possibly saved my job. Many times we get "busy" doing the wrong things because we are avoiding the hard/important things. If that sounds like you, read the book.

EDIT 2: WOW! What a book once you grasp the main message. It hammers it home hundreds of times but it took me 3 times reading it to really get it. Yes, my productivity is doubled. "Determine your most important task, (based on your goals), work on it single mindedly until you finish it, and then move on to your next most important task."Re-read that again if necessary. That is what I got as the main message of the book, and I took it to heart, and it has given me so much peace of mind, confidence, and pride.I am so grateful for this book. It really delivered on the promise of getting more done in less time, at least that of importance.HIGHLY recommended. Will be buying this for my team.EDIT: After re-reading it, gotta say it is concise and powerful. Applying the simple principles and doing the thought exercises are very helpful!Great stuff from Brian Tracy as usual. He'll tell you the fundamentals of productivity! Not a ton of extrapolation and theory, just "do this, here's why." Will read again

Great book to get yourself organized and get your priorities straight. There really is some great advice and exercises in this book to get you on track. I was struggling with finding the time to work on my personal art projects and this was the kick in the butt I needed to get moving.

I have been on a personal crusade to be more efficient and beat the monster called procrastination. It’s so easy to put projects off when I feel that I have time but just don’t feel like working on them. I’ve been trying mini habits to build up my commitments and bullet journaling to get myself primed for action. I am an advocate that there is no sure way for planning success and that everyone needs to find what works best.Years ago, I read Brian Tracy’s book Eat That Frog! I used several of his suggestions to avoid procrastination and to motivate myself back on track. The problem is that I fell off and needed a refresher. Brian just released the 3rd addition of Eat That Frog! With enhanced chapters highlighting the good and ugly of technology. I enjoyed the book, even more, this time because I had tried more motivational tricks and tips over the years and no one gives sound advice better than Brian Tracy. Eat That Frog! Gobbles up any other resource on procrastination or goal setting in the market. I encourage you to return to the 21 time tried suggestions for becoming a better you to meet surpass goals and scare the procrastination monster away.I admire Brian’s analogy of the frog on the outset of his book. He likens your “frog” to your biggest and most critical task that you need to accomplish. It’s also the goal that you are most likely to procrastinate about and put on the back burner. Brian eloquently says that "It has been said that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that it is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long”. Very powerful isn’t it? We all have a weight off of our shoulders when we can throw off the one thing that prevents us from enjoying life and bringing key results. We need to commit to ranking our core objectives and tackling them first. Don't complete the smaller tasks on your daily list just to have a feel good moment. You will only set yourself up for additional stress when your biggest task monster stares down at you. Always have clarity about what you want and make lists of categorized goals so that you can rank them and eat the biggest frogs first thing every morning.Setting and achieving goals is a process and won't happen overnight. You need to build new routines and habits to maintain structure and guide you. Brian shows us the 3 "D's" of new habits to jumpstart our journey. They include the decision, discipline, and determination. Once these behaviors are ingrained, we can start to visualize where we want to be and stop procrastinating on what is hindering our success.Successful people know that they can’t focus on everything at once. Goals need to be ranked, and some may never even be touched. They are often "filler" goals that can be delegated or deleted off the list. We should focus on the goals that will give us the biggest bang for our buck and will have a meaningful impact on our lives. This process makes us more productive and leaves us more time for the precious areas of our lives. Too often people think that getting things done equals productivity and instead they are just busy bees flitting around accomplishing little. We need to zero in on what is critical and push for productivity with intent.Brian offers 21 intriguing ideas in separate chapters to improve your productivity and kick procrastination aside. Each idea is recapped so that you can immediately implement it. We all have unique methods of organizing and approaching goals, so I love the many options that Brian introduces us to. You may want to pick one tactic a week to focus on until it's a habit or be more flexible in how you choose. Time management is your personal system and having flexibility is the key to success.Last, Brian shares the good and ugly of technology. Being wired in all day real time is a blessing because we can feasibly do our job from anywhere and we have so many tools to choose. Conversely, technology can control us and drive procrastination or encourage poor habits. Use technology wisely and to your advantage. Don't allow it to consume you.Eat That Frog! Is one book that I have marked up and highlighted to aid me in fighting procrastination and to use my time more wisely. In the past, I have listed my goals but conveniently started with the tadpoles first because they are easy. I convinced myself that I'm hacking away at the list and being productive. Now, I'm eating frogs every morning and enjoying it!

I am not a procrastinator of any sort. I like to make lists and get those lists completed. It's absolutely a sense of accomplishment to do so. I purchased this book to actually assist in modifying some business practices in my office. I work as an Operations Manager for a home remodeling company in Seattle. There were ways the business could have had a better success rate had we changed the way of doing things, just a little! And this book provided me with a great way to tweak the internal processes just enough to better how each admin performed in their key roles. Great read!

I love this book. I haven't quite finished it yet and I have already suggested it to a bunch of friends. It is so honest and so excellent. Some of it is common sense but yet we find ourselves not doing these things and getting lost in the craziness of each day. The ideas and steps in this book, will change your day and you life and keep you moving clearly in the direction of your goals if you implement them. I strongly recommend getting the work book. Honestly, I listened on Audio as I read with my eyes, I underlined as I went and I reinforced with the work book. With all those different approaches to learning the material, if I fail to implement... it is totally my fault! If you feel scattered and like you are not getting anywhere on your goals, this is an absolute must read!!
