This is a solid book on an under-researched topic: cats.The first three chapters provide a context for thinking about cats in today's world. The author discusses the history of the domestication of cats and traces their emergence as a "truly global phenomenon."In the middle chapters, the focus is on how different the senses and brains of cats are from humans. Cats, we learn, are not little furry humans. The author discusses the way cats gather information, how they interpret and use that information, and the way their emotions guide their actions. The science in these chapters is fascinating.The author goes on to examine the social life of cats--the connections they make with one another, and the science of cat "personality." The chapter on "Cats and Their People" is especially good. It discusses the human preference for "baby-faced animals," but points out that the physical appearance of cats cannot explain the affection humans have for them. Cats owe their success as pets, the author writes, because they are open to building relationships with humankind. The discussion of what cats feel for humans, and the analysis of purring, will warm the hearts of cat owners.The book closes with a look at the different pressures cats are under in today's world. The evolution of cats, the author argues, is moving away, rather than toward, better integration with human society.The book reveals that cats and dogs are more different than we might have imagined. "The dog's mind has been radically altered from that of its ancestor, the gray wolf; cats, on the other hand, still think like wild hunters." There is much to be learned from this work.NOTE: One reviewer here says the author "advocates breeding." That's not quite right. The author says that we should not be breeding cats for appearance--which is what is done today. If there is to be breeding, it should be done in order to select behaviors. This book by British anthrozoologist John Bradshaw is for a specific audience: Passionate cat lovers. Two words in the subtitle say it all "Feline Science." While there are interesting tidbits on why cats purr, why some cats are friendlier than others and the meaning behind cats' body language, virtually the entire book is an explanation of kitten-cat behavior based on prodigious study and scientific scholarship. And while this makes it a great resource for ardent cat lovers, it is far too complex and tedious for anyone else.If you love cats and truly want to know more facts about them that are based on years of advanced research, this is the reference tome for you. But if you want a light, easy book to find out more about our feline friends, keep looking.
I heard about this book on NPR's "Fresh Aire" program, and was intrigued by it enough to purchase it. The book is rather densely written, but not so academic that it can't bve read and appreciated by the 'average' reader, however, so much time is spent on the history of the domestication--or the ongoing attempt ,
It outlines the history of the domestic cat. But what can be summarized in 10 paragraphs or so is drawn out to several chapters and then repeated. As a cat lover and one who has many cats of my own, I did not find it particularly helpful. The writing style was dry and repetitive. The author also makes the assumption that cats are allowed to freely roam outdoors, a situation that is neither safe nor ideal in most urban cities.
An intelligently written book but in the end a bit dull. Some key pints are made (kittens should be socialized at 5-6 weeks, not the typical 8) and lots of literature reviewed, but as the author points out the studies are few, the conclusions controversial or open to multiple interpretations, and it is difficult to draw many conclusions. The most interesting discussion centers on the future of the pet cat in a world that is increasingly anti-cat (many groups, esp. Birders, are now actively anti-cat in the interest of conservation, though as always it is an oversimplification to conclude less cats= more birds). Instead of breeding for purity (e.g. Siamese, which like many pure breds are defective due to inbreeding), we should be breeding for the best human companions of the future, rather than just neutering our favorite cats and leaving evolution to the chance encounters between strays.
Bought this for husband who has become a cat man over the years. We appreciate the distinction between cats and dogs in the level of their domesticated behavior. Our daughter came home from college with a neutered feral male who is a source of constant entertainment, but who also gets our respect for his animal nature. Took over a month for him to come out from hiding, and he's still very discriminating about human contact-- which makes us feel honored to have his affections, such as they are. He sure is the hunter, frequently bringing home live mice. Having our consciousness raised about the impact cats are having on bird populations -- not nearly as detrimental as the human impact, but ... -- any future cats in our lives will be indoor cats, but this fellow will not be contained!

If you are interested even just a little bit in Cleopatra or her family, read this! I like Cleopatra's Daughter as well because like this novel it tells the tale of Cleopatra Selene, the daughter of Cleopatra VII, but differently. Both are great! I'm almost done with the Cleopatra's Daughter and I might be giving that 5 stars as well. I found this book at the library and ended up buying it on here to own it was that good! I am currently rereading this and have recommended it to a friend.
I enjoy historical fiction, so it's no surprise I loved this book. I went in not recalling much about Cleopatra Selene, which I think actually made the book better. Knowing the ending would have been a little anticlimactic.The book starts with a flash-forward that feels a little bit like a cheat. Exciting things happening! Then not-so-much. Still, the chapters dedicated to Cleopatra Selene's childhood in Egypt are interesting, if slow, and a good contrast to the years following her parent's death.Very little is actually known about Cleopatra Selene's life, so much of the book is from the author's imagination, but I thought it was a very plausible plot.War is violent. Ancient Romans weren't always nice, and viewed sexuality differently than we do. This book does not shy away from any of these facts. If you feel uncomfortable with this, CLEOPATRA'S MOON may not be for you, but overall I felt the author did a good job of keeping the material real without being gratuitous.Highly recommended for older teens and adults who enjoy historical fiction with a hint of romance.
The details in this book are so lovingly and lavishly filled in. The sights and sounds and smells make the story world come alive. But all those details also work to heighten the main character's emotions. The setting, the political climate, the religion...all of these worked together to be almost a character in the book. They were so important to the story, and I liked the faithful way the author handled the life and times of the ancient Romans and Greeks and Egyptians.I loved Cleopatra Selene and her commitment to her family and her calling. I loved best that she was a strong character who made her own choices and didn't feel compelled to follow her mother in every way.When I stop to consider all that this girl lost, I can scarcely take it in. She fell from such a height--being the entitled daughter of Cleopatra, the goddess queen who had such wealth and power. And from there Selene went to being a captive with no rights at all. How many people in the history of the world have been at either of those extremes? Because of her unique life, Cleopatra Selene is a fascinating character. And yet, because she also lost people she loved, she is universally relatable. Anyone who has lost a loved one can sympathize with Cleopatra Selene. On the one hand she's a powerful princess and on the other she's a little girl who has buried family members she loves. She's a wonderful character, and I feel the richer for having met her in the pages of this book.Happily Vicky Alvear Shecter did this girl justice.
The only daughter of Cleopatra VII of Egypt, Cleopatra Selene endures the deaths of her father and her mother before being dragged back to Rome by Octavianus to walk in his triumph. But her trials continue as she must survive traps set for her in Rome, and learn to become a queen in her own right.I love anything Egyptian (except Cleopatra VII, who just had to go and lose Egypt to the Romans), and Vicky Alvear Shecter delivers a wonderful novel with a strong heroine in Cleopatra Selene. While I knew the history regarding Selene's life, Shecter's version has many delightful twists and turns. The writing was atmospheric so I felt like I was actually trudging through the filth of the Subura in Rome, and the characters were all complicated and terribly human. And of course, being a sucker for romance, I adored the bit of a love triangle.This is a great book for lovers of historical fiction, especially those who enjoy the ancient world and scrappy heroines!

I'm a new marine aquarist. I bought 8 books on Amazon, including this one. This definitely isn't the "one" book you should have. The author is incredibly knowledgeable, but the book is poorly organized, poorly written and unedited. Not many typos, it's just that almost none of the information is presented in form that makes it easy to learn. Seems like a lot of the information was just taken from PowerPoint slides, which it might have been since the author used to teach marine aquarium classes. Author frequently jumps right into a subject without introducing the subject, or introducing it appropriately. He repeats the same information over and over, oftentimes just a paragraph or two later, sometimes in multiple chapters. Definitions are often presented chapters later than when the term was first used. It's obvious this is a self-published book and the author wrote it over a long period of time, with large breaks in writing, and then he didn't re-read the whole thing to remove the redundancy. A few times the suggestions are conflicting, such as he tells you how to add new marine life to your aquarium in a day, and then in a later chapter says never to introduce new marine life without quarantining it for a week plus. With that said, I'm glad I got the book and I do recommend it to any new aquarist. It has lots of commonsense advice that I didn't find in any other book. His was the only book that talked about how to move a large aquarium (boy, I wish I had read that a few days ago). He discussed the refugium the best. He has concise tables on the chemical values you need to be looking for depending on your type of tank (most of the other books discuss each chemical in detail but don't summarize in the end). His is the only book that warns that salt creep can lead to fires (over and over). His is the only that talks about making sure you have drip loops on your electrical, coral dips, an entire chapter on ich sickness, etc. and so on. The author is very knowledgeable and has very good intent, and shares a lot, but the poor organization and zero editing makes this book more of a add-on to your marine book library than a central one.
Very fast reading. Was ok but was looking for something a lot more technical and with more information on the different reef systems out there. Seems to be written more for someone just getting into the hobby.
The information in this booklet is concise and accurate based on cross-referencing other sources. The only issue is that this book lacks an editor and it makes me think it's self-published. The graphics in the book are hand-drawn pictures and the overall organization is disjointed. So, thumbs up for good information but a second edition would benefit from some fine-tuning with a nod toward making the text more readable and visually appealing.
Good read. We have owned reef tanks in the past, but this was a good review and offered helpful suggestions that were new to us. Recommend if you are starting a tank from scratch - accurately listed for beginners and more advanced.
This book was a quick but informative read. It provides necessary information to gain a high level understanding of what it takes to set up, maintain, and enjoy a saltwater aquarium.Signal strengths of the book include the reference tables and provided templates for for maintenance logs.
This book was a great help for me who’s just getting into saltwater aquariums. I even put it on my Kindle phone app so I would have it while shopping for my aquarium
Starting a marine tank for the first time is a daunting prospect and this book gives great advice on what to do, expect and buy.
As someone who has maintained a tank for about one year, I have already heard 90% of what the author has to say, but the review was worthwhile, and I definitely learned some too.
