This book is a historical narrative about the 1964 Indianapolis 500. Two excellent race car drivers tragically lost their lives in a fiery, chaotic accident at the end of the second lap, in view of thousands of spectators. The author expertly describes the number of activities, conditions and factors that lead up to that horrible moment, starting with events associated with the 1963 Indianapolis 500. It is rare for a book on racing to have such a sustained, engaging narrative. The arc of the book covers several months and many chapters examine deeply what was then a full month of action at the Speedway.At the center of the story are the two drivers, Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald. Both these drivers were excellent and successful. The latter, a veteran; the former a rookie (at Indianapolis). Sachs was outgoing, an extrovert, a salesman, a conversationalist and one very fine race car driver, particularly at Indianapolis (he almost won in 1961). MacDonald was quiet, unassuming, even humble and yet a driver of such natural talent that if he had lived subsequent strong newcomers would have been compared to him.Regarding the book: Garner can write. He knows how to tell a story and structure a chapter so that it moves the plot ahead and keeps the reader interested. He is respectful of his subject. He seeks to be comprehensive; this is no summary of events, this is the full three hour movie, which is so rare in sports' histories.The reader learns much about the Indianapolis 500 circa 1964 and the key competitors of the era including A. J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, and Jim Clark.I've read it through twice now and have only one small quibble with one small fact that only matters to racing aficionados, Regarding Jim Hurtubise's almost fatal accident a week after the 500, Herk's car did not come to a rest upside down. Mr. Garner, got so much right that I only mention this to demonstrate an unbiased, objective review of an outstanding project.The author has earned and deserves congratulations for a well-researched book, respectful to its subject, written in such a way that it warrants interest beyond the close knit racing world.Highly recommended.
I was fourteen years old in 1964 and followed sports car racing through a couple of magazines and was quite familiar with the excitement Dave McDonald was generating in Cobra and King Cobra racing. My family had been Indy 500 fans forever; and I was excited about the rear-engine revolution imported from European F1. Ford was officially entering racing again, and McDonald looked to be their 'do-it-all' man - he not only raced Cobras, but was making a splash in stock car racing - and this day he was driving his first 500. I was certain that this was a race he would eventually win - if not this year, then some year soon. I was just as sure that Jimmy Clark would set records that would never be beaten in F1, and he had a good shot at winning the 500 this day with that Ford engine screaming behind him. Racing was a fine sport and winter was behind us and we could look forward to a fine summer and forget our prior brooding winter of grief and shame. That 1964 Memorial Day, I was ready to be filled with hope again, having lost so much the previous November. So I was listening to the 1963 Indy 500 on radio when Dave McDonald and Eddie Sachs perished in a huge black cloud that, I didn't realize, would hover over racing for more than two decades. That black cloud was a fitting metaphor for the entire 1960's. Before the decade was out, 50% of the most talented drivers (and statesmen) were gone, friends were dead from combat or car accidents, and it was pretty clear that hope and sanity had shuffled off into oblivion, driven off by confusion, loss and anger. This book provides the beginning details to that somewhat broader picture of America; and it sums up the month of May, 1964, while providing little details that put the time in perspective. Did you know that a top mechanic at the Indy 500 earned only a dollar an hour more than I, at fourteen, made that summer throwing hay bales onto wagons? That whole teams would spend their nights for the entire month sleeping on cots in basements of local Indianopolis people? That important decisions regarding driver and fan safety were made on the grounds that, if 13" tires were allowed, it would make the cars look funny? The book's a good read about a watershed moment in racing
Don't be put off by the title or the cover art. Mr. Garner has written a fine book not just about the 1964 Indianapolis 500, but of the cross currents of history that conspired on that fateful day without glorifying the incidents that took place or wallowing in the gothic tragedy. He certainly covers the accident but handles it as respectfully as it could be expected. More importantly, he writes a true book of history, something sorely missing in motorsports journalism. History is the "who", "where", "when", and most importantly, "why" of our past. So many in the motorsports field simply want to recount what happened without being brave enough to postulate the reasons and giving solid arguments to support those reasons. Mr. Garner puts forth many factors that conspired in 1964; the transition to a new technology (ie, rear-engined cars), the influx of drivers from different racing disciplines, the influx of money in the form of sponsorships and auto manufacturer support and a governing body that did not have the foresight to prepare for these changes. Mr. Garner has also given us a view into the lives of Dave MacDonald and Eddie Sachs (and others) and forces us to realize these were real mean with real lives and real families and yes, real faults, like the rest of us. It has been all to easy for fans over the years to blame one driver for the accident. Mr. Garner shows us that is too simple of an answer and that we should be prepared in the future so that this does not happen again.

I’ve been using this deck for awhile now. I pull one card a day for myself and sometimes for others. They have been quite accurate for me and the people I have pulled for. I would recommend this deck.
I really love these oracle cards - beautiful and I really connect with them. I gave away all my other ones, angel cards, etc. these ones just really resonate. I am part Native American, a Reiki master and healer and I felt that these had just the right combination of groundedness and ethereal energy, if that makes any sense. I would definitely recommend.
I am in love with these cards. As soon as I touched them I could feel the beautiful energy that was used to create them. I use them every morning and for special readings. Definitely buy these cards if you appreciate beautiful artwork and animals. They come with a guidebook but I don't usually use it. I usually meditate on the meaning if it is not immediately obvious. Great way to strengthen the intuition.
These cards are beautifully written. They never fail to bring me out of a funk or help me make a difficult decision. Many journal entries have been inspired by the thoughts and realizations these cards have sparked in me. I have learned a lot from them...about myself and about life. Highly recommended for regular personal work and also as a great gift for friends and family.

Beautiful cards in a sturdy box. I found these being used by the spiritual people of Sedona, AZ. Do they work? Who knows- but many people believe they do. I just appreciate their beauty. I gave them to my "hippy" friends tand hey all loved them. Cards very thick and richly illustrated, with a ridged texture that makes for easy handling.
The card stock quality is Excellent! It is sturdy and will be able to withstand abuse and I am a professional tarot and oracle card reader so I need cards that can take the abuse of daily wear! I can't begin to say how awesome these cards are, the artistry is spectacular each animal is depicted beautifully and the messages are wonderful I did a reading on myself to find out which animal I would get and I got the wolverine the message was you are lot tougher than you think you are! LOL OH YEAH!! Get this deck it is a wonderful addition for any serious collector.
Beautiful cards. The only thing that I wish was a little different is the texture of the cards. They are a little too ridged making it a little difficult for me to shuffle fast That is my experience at least. Maybe someone else wont have that problem. Other than that, they are really nice!

The book provided a real first-person insight into the disasters in Haiti from an American doctor's perspective. It helped me to understand how dire the situation was and what really took place. However, I felt that it was saying the same things over and over. If you read the first chapter, that's pretty much the whole book. I would have liked it to be more of an incorporation of different events from different perspectives. It does have a section for other perspectives at the end, but it's really at the very end. It's just confusing and has a lot of name dropping. I just wanted him to get to the point and teach me what I needed to know. It looked more like a diary from a very confused person rather than reading material.
I am a frequent visitor to Haiti representing a mission that helps children with scholarships to school and provides lunches for them. What I've found over the years is how hard it is to understand the culture. It is always great to read different opinions of how things are going. It's hard to imagine how bad the earthquake was or how big the challenges are. Paul Farmer has assembled a number of views of the post earthquake scene in Haiti by people who are very close to the situation. It is refreshing to see the Haitian people wanting to develop their nation in their own unique way. Sometimes this looks rather chaotic to outsiders, but how can they ever feel proud about themselves if they don't do it themselves. Farmer's book gives us glimpses of this and doesn't paint an overly pessimistic picture.
Dr. Paul Farmer, Partners in Health and its sister Haitian organization Zanmi Sante, have transformed health care delivery in rural Haiti. When the earthquake shook Haiti to its very foundations in January, 2010, Farmer and his colleagues were jolted out of the "comfort zone" that they had established in and around rural Cange, and were confronted with the need to respond to the overwhelming acute medical needs that the earthquake had created in urban Port-au-Prince. This book represents Dr. Farmer's reflections one year after the earth-shaking event. His thoughts are supplemented beautifully by colleagues who were impacted in their own way by the ramifications of the earthquake.Farmer speaks authoritatively from a variety of perspective - as head of a successful NGO, as the Deputy to Bill Clinton in the UN's Office of the Special Envoy to Haiti, as a expert in public health and epidemiology. The book sheds light on many of the decisions and actions that were taken in the hours and days after the earthquake, and the ongoing struggle to respond to what Farmer call an "acute upon chronic crisis" in helping Haiti move from rescue and recover to "building back better." For those of us who love Haiti and its people, this is a "must read" book, for it chronicles with great detail the ways in which the Haitian government, the U.S. government, the international community and NGO's interact with each other. The author has strong opinions about how things should work going forward, so the book is both descriptive and prescriptive. One would expect nothing less from a physician than for him to sign his name to a prescription pad to help alleviate Haiti's suffering.Like the history of Haiti itself, this memoir is a mixture of despair and hope. I recommend it highly for anyone who wants a glimpses behind the curtain of what is happening (and not yet happening) in re-building Haiti.
Loving such a sad story is strange. But Farmer is such an expert in his subject - Haiti - and was so involved in the recent history that this book is a page turner. I learnt so much about Haiti and could relate to the places I've been to. This story makes you wonder how so called "AId Organizations" and International Development should work and what is their real effect where they operate. Sometimes eye opening, the book is essential to understanding modern day relations with poor countries.A must read for anybody either interested and travelling to Haiti or wanting to understand modern international Aid.
This book is a must read for Haiti watchers. Paul Farmer is always great but this is urgent stuff. The problem is that a conserted effort to break through the Haitian and Donor bottlenecks to "buld back better" has not been mounted. How this can be done is far from clear. Too bad that the new Haitian President has not created a real working team with the UN under Bill Clinton, with a mandate to coordinate (read "direct") the multidonor effort at reconstruction. Such a vehicle is needed to simply powerhouse the whole enterprise.This new Farmer book should be read in tandem with Tim Schwartz, Travesty in Haiti. In his book you get more insight into the powerful impediments to development that have been built over time in the Haitian cultural fabic and in the peprvasive self-interest of donor agencies both governmental and in charitable NGOs.The problem is that a wholistic approach on a 20-30 year time frame is needed. The starts and stops of foreig aid programs, the lack of coherence among donor programs, and the constant debilitation of government agencies - all demand time to fix. I love his passion for Haiti and we definitely need to help out the wonderful people. I found the little stories at the end to be more enjoyable reading, and at the same time the main reading was informative with a desire to bring others to Haiti. I found many good points and would read it again sometime.
We know this author from his previous works. What a good man he is and always in the thick of trouble helping others in need. His story is good and tells it without frills. We need more Paul Farmers in the world. His life was very interesting, and he grew up, not a person of privilege but a person who was raised to be good and decent. If asked who I would like to meet nowadays, I would say Paul Farmer. He is right up there with other heroes
