Best-selling author and gifted science writer, Sam Kean, provides readers with a real gem. Kean's great eye for captivating stories about the brain and his expertise in retelling these stories end up helping the readers gain an understanding of how the brain works. This fascinating 377-page book is broken out into the following five parts: Part I. Gross Anatomy; Part II. Cells, Senses; Circuits Part III. Body and Brain; Part IV. Beliefs and Delusions; and Part V. Consciousness.Positives:1. Science writing at its best. Kean is climbing the echelon of premier popular science authors.2. Neuroscience is one of my favorite topics and thrilled that a gifted storyteller handled this book.3. Great format and approach. Each chapter covers an intriguing story about how the brain works yet it flows beautifully as a whole.4. Plenty of diagrams of parts of the brain and photos that complement this wonderful narrative.5. Kean excels at keeping it real. He doesn't oversell what we know and keeps the science well grounded in reality.6. Wonderful gift of narration that includes a well weaved story based on history and good science.7. Once again, the impact of religion on science rears its head. "In the early 1200s, the Catholic church had declared that no proper Christians, including physicians, could shed blood; physicians therefore looked down upon surgeons as butchers."8. Love how theories of neuroscience are introduced some are ultimately debunked and others have staying impact. "These findings led Cajal to propose the "neuron doctrine," one of the most important discoveries ever in neuroscience. In brief, Cajal's neurons were not continuous, but had tiny gaps between them. And they transmitted information in one direction only: from dendrite to cell body to axon."9. The analysis of famous assassins' brains that lead to interesting discoveries.10. Sometimes asking the right questions are as important as the answers. "Sorting out cause and effect is tricky with brain chemistry: does depression cause changes in brain chemicals, or do changes in brain chemicals cause depression? The street probably runs both ways. But the balance of evidence does suggest that loneliness, isolation, and a sense of helplessness can all deplete neurotransmitters--can poison the soup and sap vital ingredients."11. Interesting look at how neurons work. "Overall, just as a wagon wheel will carve a rut into the road after repeated journeys, repeated neuron firings will carve ruts into the brain that make signals much more likely to follow some neural tracks than others."12. How vision works. "In fact, our vision is so biased toward movement that we don't technically see stationary objects at all. To see something stationary, our brains have to scribble our eyes very subtly over its surface. Experiments have even proved that if you artificially stabilize an image on the retina with a combination of special contact lenses and microelectronics, the image will vanish."13. A look at how the brain maps the body.14. An interesting look at a number of interesting diseases involving the brain. "They proposed that kuru, scrapie, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob--which all cause "spongiform" brain damage and can all lie dormant for long periods before roaring awake--were caused by a new class of microbes, which they dubbed `slow viruses.'"15. Excellent examples of specific damages to the brain and its impact. "But around age ten she began suffering from Urbach-Wiethe disease, a rare disorder that petrifies and kills amygdala cells. Within a few years she had two "black holes" where her amygdalae should have been. She hasn't felt a lick of fear since."16. Many revelations in this book, here is one of my favorites: "Temporal lobe lesions can flip people's sexual orientations from gay to straight (or vice versa), or redirect their sexual appetites toward inappropriate things: common side effects of Klüver-Bucy include zoophilia, coprophilia, pedophilia, and -philias so idiosyncratic they don't have names."17. A look at what happens when brain processes go awry. "Some delusions run so deep that they fray the very fabric of the victim's universe. With so-called Alice in Wonderland syndrome--a side effect of migraines or seizures--space and time get warped in unsettling ways."18. The difference between Broca and Wernicke's area. "Generally speaking, a broken Broca's area knocks out speech production, while a wrecked Wernicke's area impairs speech comprehension."19. By far the best retelling of the over told story of Phineas Gage (it's practically in every book of popular neuroscience). He debunks some myths pertaining to this story, which I found to be quite refreshing.20. Works cited and so much more...Negatives:1. Very little not to like about this book. I would have added a timeline or a table of the greatest contributors of neuroscience as a nice additional bonus.2. Kean stays away from controversial issues. There is very little on intelligence and as I recall nothing on gender differences. He touches upon social justice with regards to crime and punishment but I sense he holds back.3. I loved the retelling of Phineas Gage's story but I felt Kean could have done better with the topic of consciousness.In summary, what a fun way to learn about how the brain works; this is a beautifully written and well-researched book that is a joy to read. Fascinating stories about ordinary people who went through extraordinary circumstances and Kean retells their stories with mastery. A high recommendation! Having read both of Sam's other books already, I was really looking forward to his latest. I was NOT disappointed at all! The research is detailed enough to explain neuroscientific processes without leaving us non science majors deep in the weeds. Sam's writing style incorporates humor into the discussion while providing what seems to be (to me) a primer on the evolution of the discoveries and how those were applied in real life to try to improve patients with Neuro issues. Bravo, Mr. Kean. I will be looking forward to more from you. Highly recommended.
Wow...two great books in a month! I didn't think I'd find another book comparable to The Emperor of All Maladies for a while. But I got very lucky and read Kean's book on the brain, and hit paydirt.I have 2 degrees in Neuroscience, and of course, read many, many textbooks while getting my degrees. I can honestly say that I don't think anyone has made this information on how the brain works, and the various things that can and do go wrong, as accessible as Kean has made it.Kean takes complicated information and he doesn't 'dumb' it down, he just presents it in an easily understood format, and with a significant amount of humor. He actually confirms my thinking that most textbooks are written for the peer group of the author, rather than to make concepts accessible to students. The book starts with cells and works up to the different lobes of the brain, and then continues on to the brain as a whole. In each section, Kean includes stories of people who undergo brain disorders, explaining how and why the brain is responding to trauma in this manner. Unlike in other textbooks or material that I've read concerning individuals with brain disorders, Kean doesn't deal with just the disorder, he deals with the person behind the disorder. One of the best sections in the book was on Phineas Gage, who accidentally blasted a tamping rod through his brain, in such a way that he caused damage to his emotional brain. Kean included more information on what happened to Gage than any other book I have read. Most other material simply repeats that this man went from being nice to being nasty, and Kean makes it clear that this simply isn't true. Gage managed to live another 12 years after his accident and for most of that time, was a working member of society.Kean deals with one of the biggest questions in neuroscience...that of where the physical presence of the brain ends, and where our 'mind' or consciousness and ego begin. With each little snippet of information, and studying people with brain disorders, we gain a little more insight into what makes each of us an individual. Writing such as Kean is doing on science topics make it so that everyone can know and understand the importance of the brain. Hopefully, when someone picks up a newspaper with information about the newest research in Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, they will be more likely to understand what is being discussed thanks to Kean's book.
Sam Kean's book, like the books by Mary Roach, is filled with fascinating stories about how even the smallest injuries to the brain can produce large, bizarre, and almost unpredictable consequences. We all live with the delusion that "we" are in charge of our brains and our brains are in charge of everything we do. If you still believe this, Kean's book will shake you up. This book has left me with an appreciation of how amazing it is that most humans, despite the weird workings of our brains, manage to function in relationships and in society. The writing style is delightfully imprecise. As the author of four science books, I plan to use this style in my next book. This book is a superlative example of how science can help us understand the world and ourselves.

Art District on Santa Fe:Galleries Galore and Latin FlairBoundaries: 7th Ave., Santa Fe Dr., 10th Ave. Distance: 0.5 mileDifficulty: EasyParking: Free 2-hour parking is available on Santa Fe Dr. and side streets; $5 parking at West High School parking lot on First Fridays (proceeds fund the school’s cultural programs) at 10th Ave. and Galapago St.Public Transit: The RTD light-rail stops at 10th Ave. and Osage St.; RTD 1 bus stops on this route.The La Alma/Lincoln Park neighborhood of Denver is one with historic roots as deep as downtown and Auraria, but it remains lesser known. The buildings around here―whether homes, storefronts, warehouses, or theatres―date back to the late 1800s and turn of the century, and many have stucco covering the original brick, which gives more of a New Mexico feel than other parts of Denver. The primary business district of the neighborhood is along Santa Fe Drive, where you’ll find the city’s largest concentration of art galleries for three vibrant blocks. La Alma/Lincoln Park has a predominantly Hispanic population, and that culture resonates throughout a handful of the more significant galleries and art institutions on this walk. The emphasis in these art spaces is on local talent―artists based in Denver and Colorado―but there is also room for national and international work on display here. Even if you are not a serious art collector, the gift shops of some galleries make it easy for anyone to become a patron of the arts. On the First Friday of each month year-round, these narrow sidewalks are filled with people walking from gallery to gallery. During the holidays, traditional luminarias line the streets as well. Or it can be a fun afternoon stroll with a stop for tasty Mexican food and seeing art at your own pace. Walk DescriptionBegin this walk on the west corner of 7th Avenue and Santa Fe Drive. Walk north on Santa Fe Drive. The majority of the galleries on this walk are members of Art District on Santa Fe―a collection of dozens of galleries, shops, and restaurants that goes beyond these three blocks. Along the walk you will see banners and window stickers for Art District on Santa Fe, and you can pick up very handy brochures with maps to guide you along this street and beyond. On your immediate left is the Denver Civic Theater, now the home of Su Teatro. The building itself opened in 1921 as one of Denver’s first silent movie theatres and had many other uses before renovation in the 1990s to be used as two theatre spaces. Su Teatro is the third-oldest Chicano theatre company in the United States. Su Teatro performs original plays, adaptations, and other works relevant to the Chicano/Latino community each year. Next on this block is Artists on Santa Fe, a co-op gallery of Denver artists and their open studios where you can see them create ceramics, paintings, sculpture, and photography. About halfway down the block after crossing 8th Avenue, step into John Fielder’sColorado gallery. John Fielder is Colorado’s preeminent photographer, who is known for his vivid Colorado landscape images of mountain peaks, golden aspens, colorful wildflower meadows, and more. Fielder has published several books―guidebooks, children’s books, instructional books―but may be best known for his Colorado 1870–2000 books in which he recreates the landscape images of photographer W. H. Jackson. This gallery shows works of many other nature photographers too. A few doors down is the Museo de las Americas, an educational space that also exhibits Latino art. The Museo is one of the organizations on Santa Fe Drive with a focus solely on Latino culture and art, through summer camps, workshops, and tours. As you go to cross 9th Avenue, note that to your left is the Renegade Brewing Company, where you can sip fresh beer and talk with friends in their taproom―no TVs, on purpose!―and if you’re lucky, there might be a food truck outside serving up a hot nibble. Continuing on Santa Fe Drive after crossing 9th Avenue you will see the Center for Visual Art (the off-campus Metropolitan State University of Denver art gallery). Shows here go well beyond the student body art with exhibits by internationally recognized artists such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, group shows by women artists from Vietnam and Japanese women ceramicists, all with educational components such as related workshops and lectures by visiting artists or professors. At 10th Avenue, you can take a left and shop for some very hip ties at Knotty Tie Co (such a clever name!). Neck ties, bow ties, and pocket squares for the gents, lightweight scarves for the gals, all made right here in Denver. If you missed the food truck at Renegade, pop into Interstate Kitchen & Bar, just across 10th Avenue, for some comfort food (brunch, lunch, or dinner on weekends, but just dinner on weekdays). Although this walk doesn’t continue north on Santa Fe Drive, it’s worth noting that the Colorado Ballet relocated their headquarters to 11th Avenue and Santa Fe Drive in 2014, after decades at their previous location near the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Turn right again to walk south on Santa Fe Drive to return to 7th Avenue. The historic Aztlan Theatre will be on your left. It was built in the 1920s and is now used as a music venue. Halfway down the block begins 910 Arts, which combines housing, exhibit, and performance space. The former livery and bottling plant space has an open-air courtyard, acoffee shop called Studio 6, eight lofts, and 17 studios, all of it painted in eye-catching bright yellows, reds, and greens. At the corner of 9th Avenue is Spark Gallery, the Mile High City’s oldest art cooperative, featuring 30 established artists working in a variety of mediums, and the Core New Art Space with shows by emerging artists. Just after crossing 8th Avenue you will come to the CHAC (short for Chicano Humanities and Arts Council) Gallery & Cultural Center, showcasing Latino/Chicano performance and visual art. Check their calendar for new visual artists, musicians, dancers, and poets, and plan ahead for their special events such as Santos & Crosses in August, El Dia de los Muertos in October and November, and Luminarias de la Guadalupe in December. Surprise! Ethiopian food at Santa Fe Drive’s Arada Ethiopian Restaurant offers an alternative to the Mexican restaurants and pubs in the area with exotic dishes in a colorful dining room for dinner only. Next up is what you expect in this neighborhood: simple and delicious Mexican food.El Noa Noa has a courtyard with fountain and mariachi band for those warm summer nights in the city and simple combination platters or a la carte items with cold Mexican beer. Next door is El Taco de Mexico, also with familiar beef or chicken tacos, of course, but adventurous eaters might want to try the tongue or brain on the menu in this small cafe. At the corner of 7th Avenue and Santa Fe Drive, notice the Byers Branch Library. The ByersLibrary was built in 1918 as part of the Carnegie-funded libraries and is unique for its Spanisheclectic architectural style. The library was named for William N. Byers, founder of the nowdefunct Rocky Mountain News, and it is now a designated historic landmark. The walk ends at 7th Avenue and Santa Fe Drive.

Walking Denver is a terrific guide for not only seeing but experiencing the Mile High City. This 7†by 7†230 page volume is a perfect size for carrying, especially for those travelers who tire of the too-narrow pages of some books where the photos, maps and text seem to get lost in the binding. As compact as the city of Denver itself, Walking Denver features thirty tours, many of which can be combined in a single outing. The author notes that within a one-mile radius, visitors can stroll to most of the historic, architectural, and cultural highlights.Each walk description includes a full-page map with clearly marked routes and sites along the way. Logistics of the walk are added: distance, difficulty, parking available, and using public transit. The author might have added locations of the city’s bike parking stations for its bike share program as well. The descriptive text is in large, bold type making it easier for quick glancing especially during the many bright days in the city. Some readers might want more photographs of the sites, but walking and seeing directly is the priority here. Denver has changed a lot in the past two or three years, and this was the most up-to-date guidebook we could find. Because it was originally published a while ago, it combines old Denver with new Denver and contains lots of great neighborhood walks. Small enough to fit in a purse or day pack as well.
This is a clear, concise guide for walking around Denver. The maps are easy to follow and not overly detailed. The book includes interesting history of the areas covered. We visited our children who just moved into a LoDo condo. They also learned about their new community. The locals agreed with the restaurant recommendations. The distance and level of effort needed is included with each walking tour. I would suggest leaving more time than suggested, however, as we stopped for ice cream, read historical signs, shopped and watched people playing to stretch a 30 minute walk into 2 1/2 hours!
Fast easy service.. Good Book.. Useful on the go; The map sections could have been better integrated showing where one leaves off and another starts as some are extensions of the others.. also could have had a bit more detail on maps so I can locate alternate routes,, but overall pretty good book..
I've had this book since summer and have used it quite a bit. It's very informative, with lots of side notes and historical facts (which I LOVE), and is just the right size to follow along as you walk. As I get older sometimes I have a heard time reading, but this book has a nice and large font that's very pleasant on the eyes. Some black and white pictures, nothing in color, but if you are doing the walks you'll be seeing the real thing anyway, up close and personal. Take a camera and this book to explore the wonderful and historical areas of Denver.

I was looking for something that could engage my students and trigger deeper discussion. This does the job.
I love retellings of biblical accounts because different authors bring to light aspects that might not have been considered. "Lilith's Ark" is a book of interconnected short stories that examine the common thread between women in the Book of Genesis. I am a Christian, and I was extremely impressed with this book. Deborah Bodin Cohen is a gifted writer who explores how women relate stories to one another and share similar joy, pain, and love. Women from every generation experience the same insecurities and happiness. I do not necessarily agree with the Lilith story or the Adam and Eve interpretation. Lilith is not in Scripture. Eve was created to be an equal "helper" for Adam, (symbolized by God fashioning her out of Adam's rib). In Cohen's story Adam hides information from Eve and is domineering. However, all of the other stories were outstanding.My favorite stories were those about Rachel and Leah: each sister gets to tell her own story, and the reader learns of the love and the tension between them. Leah is one of my favorite biblical women, because she is visually impaired like me. God loves all His children, and His compassion and love for Leah always moves me to tears. It is through her lineage that Christ came into the world!Dinah's story was heartwrenching but also hopeful. I loved Tamar's tale a lot because she is gutsy and insists upon her rights. The Bible, contrary to popular opinion, is not a "women-bashing" book. God's Word introduces strong female role models whom God uses to fulfill His purposes.Ms. Cohen also does an exceptional job with the story of Asenath, Joseph's wife. Although the Bible does not say that Asenath was Dinah's daughter, I thought the story was probable and very creative.Ms. Cohen also has an outstanding discussion guide in the back of the book. The author asks relevants questions for today's adolescent girls. "Lilith's Ark" is a wonderful teaching tool that could be used in classrooms and worship services. People of all faiths can enjoy such an eye-opening book. Happy reading and God bless.
According to the author, "Lilith's Ark is a midrash, a story that grows from the Torah text and the imagination." Each chapter features a different biblical character-- starting with Lilith and Eve and continuing with Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Rachel, Leah, Dinah, Tamar and Asenath. After each woman tells her story she places an item in the ark that represents an important aspect of her life. The ark is then passed on to the next generation. The stories are engaging, sensitive and thought provoking, similar to The Red Tent and The Harlot at the Side of the Road, but more appropriately written for teens. For each chapter there are "Discussion Themes"; "Discussion Questions", a section called" Extending the Exploration," which guides the reader toward more study and thought, and a section called "A Mother- Daughter Dialogue," which stimulates meaningful discussions between teens and adults. Also, an extensive discussion guide appears at the end of the book. This book could form the basis for a Mother-Daughter or Parent-Teen study group. Each month a different chapter could be read and discussed. The discussion questions encourage participants to share their thoughts and insights, helping teens and adults gain a better understanding of each other. For ages 12 and up. This wonderful story collection tells the story of ten of our biblical foremothers from Lilith to Asenath (Joseph's wife.) Each story begins with a "Hint from the Torah," a phrase about each woman as it is related in the Torah. Then there is a midrashic tale of the woman's experience and final the woman puts a symbol of her story into the ark so that future generations will come to know her. The midrashic stories are beautifully written and fully expound on the stories we and our children have come to know from reading and studying Torah. There is much here for exploration and discussion.There are never enough story books for young girls about biblical characters. This is a wonderful addition to the shelf as it not only tells the story of a woman from the Hebrew Bible, it also provides a discussion guide for each story and ideas for how mother-daughter book groups could use this book. It includes ideas for creating their own ark and discussions about what to place in it. I highly recommend this book to Jewish libraries. With the rise of such titles as Rosh Hodesh: It's a Girl Thing and The JGirl's Guide, young women of today will have a healthy understanding of life during biblical times and how it was not so very different from our own. This lovely gem of a book is a welcome addition to the wealth of Jewish literature, providing young Jewish women with powerful Biblical role models by telling their stories in a relevant and engaging way. I remember feeling alienated from Biblical literature as a teen, since most of the stories centered on men. The female Biblical heroines got short shrift in those days, which distanced me from an appreciation of my heritage. Rabbi Cohen's contribution of Lilith's Ark is a wonderful resource for youth group leaders and religious school teachers who work with adolescent girls. The discussion questions and extensions which accompany each story are of tremendous value to these busy professionals in facilitating discussion groups. It would also make an excellent bat mitzvah gift to increase the recipient's understanding of the heritage she has inherited. In his introduction to this book, Lane-Poole claims that "no complete Life of the celebrated adversary of Richard Coeur de Lion" is available in the English language. This may have been true when the book was written at the end of the 19th century, but it is no longer the case. Seduced by the low price and thinking that the biography of someone who lived 800 years ago need not be recent, I bought the biography anyway. It was a mistake.While understanding that every biographer is to some extent the captive of his/her sources, this book is far more than biased: it is a long eulogy that singularly fails to provide the analysis and context vital to a good biography. Instead, Lane-Poole slavishly follows his pro-Saladin sources without standing back to question or balance these sources with information drawn from other chronicles and historians or - indeed - simple common sense.For example, he repeatedly mentions that Christian clerics were prepared to absolve Christian leaders of oaths made to non-Christians - but does not once mention that Muslim clerics told their fighting men exactly the same thing only in reverse: that they need not keep their word with non-Muslims. Likewise, it gets very tedious to have every tactical defeat of a Christian force portrayed as a "humiliating retreat" with the Christians slinking away "with their tails between their legs" - in one case this was after just one week in the field! -- while every set back Saladin suffered (and he sometimes spent many months in pointless sieges!) is explained away as a wise decision not to pursue a time-consuming campaign or the need to let his troops go home to see their families. Indeed, Lane-Poole mentions several times how attached Muslims are to their wives and children, but does not credit Christians with the same feelings.As for Saladin's defeat at Mont Gisard, where Saladin's army of 20,000 was put to flight by roughly 500 knights led by a 16 year old suffering from leprosy, it is glossed over as "inexplicable" and takes up less than two pages of the narrative. A real historian would have been intent on explaining both how it happened - and what Saladin learned from it; as a biographer, the latter point is particularly important as such a bitter defeat (Saladin had to escape on a pack camel and lost almost his entire body guard) surely left its scars on his psyche.It is likewise the mark of a dilettante rather than a historian to claim that Richard I "was honeymooning" on Cyprus, when in fact he was conquering the island from a tyrant and by so doing secured the lines-of-communication and a breadbasket for the crusader states for the next hundred years. Indeed, the Latin Kingdom of Cyprus outlived the crusader kingdoms by more than 200 years.In fairness, however, I should mention that Lane-Poole clearly had visited Cairo and Damascus and other key cities, and his careful and intelligible descriptions of what they were like in Saladin's time and what had changed since (upto his present in the late 19th century) were the highlights of this bookYet Lane-Poole's bias in favor of Islam is so extreme it is even applied to little things such as the way the "wooden [sic] bells of the Christians harshly clashed [wood?] instead of the sweet and solemn chant of the muezzin." (As someone who hears the call to prayers five times a day, I beg to differ with that utterly subjective statement!)About four fifths of the way through the book, Lane-Poole casts aside all pretense of being a historian and biographer and declares his partisanship in the statement: "But the students of the Crusades do not need to be told that in the struggle of civilization, magnanimity, toleration, real chivalry, and gentle culture were all on the side of the Saracens." (Chapter XIX) Now, students of the crusades know just the opposite: that there were atrocities, betrayals, cruelties, excesses and also magnanimity, generosity, courage and gentle culture on BOTH sides.The greatest weakness of this book is that by its excessive bias it detracts from its hero. Saladin deserves our respect because he was exceptional, not because he was perfect. Saladin stands out as an impressive and attractive example of integrity, tenacity, leadership, piety and generosity - particularly when compared to his successors, such as Baibars. He was undoubtedly a more chivalrous figure than Guy de Lusignan, and even Christians despised and repudiated butchers like Ranaud de Chatillon. But Saladin deserves a real biography that attempts to explain him as a statesmen and a military leader; this book is not it. I strongly recommend therefore more recent biographies of Saladin -- they are worth the higher price.
Wonderful presentation of this very complex period in history of middle east. Well written and very readable if your interests tend toward history and especially the history of an part of the world which continues to capture our interest in its current state of constant upheaval
Recently, I saw the 2005 film THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, a sword and shield epic centered upon the 1187 recapture of Jerusalem from the Christians by Sultan Yusuf Ibn Najni al-Din Ayyub Ibn Shadlhi Abu'l-Muzaffar Salah al-Din al-Malik al-Nasir, aka "Saladin". The hero of the film was not Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), but rather Balian (Orlando Bloom), who, as the film opens, is sweating over a hot forge as a sword maker in some dump of a rural French town in the early 1180s. Then, along comes Godfrey (Liam Neeson), a knight and minor noble back from Palestine, who reveals himself as Balian's previously unknown father. Godfrey persuades Balian to take up a sword in defense of the Holy Land. On the return trip, Godfrey dies, but not before knighting his son. Balian subsequently inherits his father's castle of Ibelin within the Kingdom of Jerusalem, becomes chummy with King Baldwin IV and his sister Sibylla (Eva Green), finds himself defending the Holy City almost single-handed against Saladin's horde after the Christian army's disastrous defeat at Hitton, and ultimately returns to France, where he ostensibly lives happily ever after with Sibylla, who now holds the title Queen of Jerusalem. Uh-huh. So, I picked up SALADIN AND THE FALL OF JERUSALEM to find out the real story.Penned in 1898 by Stanley Lane-Poole, this volume is a competent and informative bio of the great Muslim leader, who was respected and praised even by his Crusader foes. Admittedly, the first several chapters dealing with "Saladin's world", and which describe the Muslim politics of the region and the events of the First Crusade prior to Saladin's birth and rise to power, make for educational, but less than riveting, reading. It's only with Saladin's accession as the Sultan of Egypt in 1171 that his life really becomes interesting as he subsequently labors militarily and politically to unite the Muslim Middle East under one rule, i.e. his, drive the Unbelievers into the sea, and topple the Kingdom of Jerusalem.The book's 19th century roots show even in this 2002 reprint of the original. The occasional map, while certainly not indecipherable, doesn't have the clean look of one of modern construction. More telling, the author infrequently sprinkles the text with passages from original Latin or French sources, which go untranslated. Presumably, the average reader at the turn of the 19th century was more educated and literate than now and could be expected to get along as required in something other than English. This new reprint does, however, include a helpful section of black and white photographs that apparently, because of the presence of automobiles, didn't appear in the first release.The tone of Lane-Poole's narrative is one of detached and uncritical admiration for his hero, as justifiably it should be, since Saladin demonstrated more chivalry, magnanimity, and honor throughout his career than his chief Crusader opponent from June 8, 1191 to October 9, 1192, King Richard I of England. Indeed, the author, who's otherwise adulatory of the Lionheart's prowess in battle, doesn't shirk from recounting Richard's barbarous order to massacre 2,700 Muslims taken prisoner during his capture of Acre, an order that the author terms "cruel and cowardly", and would today be cause for a war crimes tribunal. Well, so much for the flower of English chivalry.SALADIN AND THE FALL OF JERUSALEM should satisfy a reader such as myself that seeks a general knowledge of Saladin and his accomplishments without getting too obsessive about it.And what of Balian? While he was one of only three knights left after the Battle of Hitton to defend Jerusalem, and who indeed played the key role in the defense of the city and subsequent surrender negotiations with Saladin, Balian had only a relatively small part in the rest of the story - so small that I had to resort to a Web encyclopedia to get more info about the man. What I learned there was that his saga in THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN was rampant fiction evidently hallucinated by a Hollywood screenwriter in the throes of an illegal substance. Especially that bit about running off with Sybilla. Gee, why doesn't that surprise me?
If you are interested in the Crusades, this is the book for you. It tells the story of where Salidin came from, how he attained his control of the "saracens" army, his conquering of much of the Frankish kingdoms, and finally, Richard the Lionhearts' retaking of much of those kingdoms, as well as his attempt to take back Jerusalem.
A solid effort to accurately portray this remarkable individual. A terrific accounting along with a good, though brief history of Jerusalem.

This is a good history of Saladin's work and life. I was looking for more about the family and the dynasty, which is not here.
