The Secret Pool (Tilbury House Nature Book), by Kimberly Ridley

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-4-The secret pool is a vernal pond, also known as an ephemeral pool, for its temporary existence as a small, forest wetland habitat. This pond is personified and describes the myriad life it supports in first-person, vibrant, rhyming verse. The verse is amplified by narrative text detailing the lives and life cycles supported by this small woodland pond. The exuberant, earthy illustrations seem to spill off the page as they portray a habitat brimming with life in every season. They compel readers to stop, look, and then perhaps count the wood frogs or fairy shrimp (both indicator species of these ponds) or wonder at the reflection of such predators as an upside-down owl. Even the two-page glossary is illustrated with a winter forestscape. Unique and original, this informative book will captivate and inform readers and browsers alike.-Frances E. It reads with the delight and dangers of a fairy tale, but it's grounded in science. --Holly Meade, illustrator of the Caldecott Honor winning Hush! A Thai Lullaby and other booksThe Secret Pool is enchanting! I encourage parents, grandparents, and friends of children everywhere to read the book with a young one and then open the door to see if you can find a vernal pool. If you don't live in a region where vernal pools can be found, look for something else in nature that changes through the seasons and serves as a home for wildlife. --Cheryl Charles, Ph.D., Co-Founder, Children & Nature NetworkWith poetic text, fact-filled sidebars, and lively illustrations, this book informs readers about the intriguing world of vernal pools, the temporary habits that form in forests each summer. From fairy shrimp to spotted salamanders, readers will learn about the many creatures and systems that rely on these seasonal habitats. Ages 7-11. --Skipping StonesThis surprisingly engaging look at a habitat not often covered in science curricula and popular nonfiction series strikes a harmonious balance of conversational language, factual text and informative illustrations. On the full-bleed spread preceding the first page, Raye paints a watery woodland scene, in a multitude of greens and browns, with a population of creatures that depend upon the vernal pool for survival. Children will be amazed at how vital this place is for owls, rabbits, ducks, raccoons, robins, turtles, toads, tadpoles, snakes, dragonflies, deer, skunks, squirrels, frogs and salamanders. The vernal pool speaks from the beginning, 'A shimmer. A twinkling. Do you have any inkling of what I am?...you might mistake me for a puddle which I most certainly am not!' Each spread features captivating narrative that explains this watery jewel on a child's level on one side and on the other provides more scientific information in a smaller font. Topics covered include the definition of a vernal pool and highlights about the various animals that begin or spend their entire lives in this relatively small biome. The book proceeds from the earliest days of spring through an entire year, dictating the order in which creatures are introduced. Readers will be amazed to learn that wood frogs can freeze into 'frogsicles' during winter only to thaw out in the spring and that fairy shrimp eggs can last up to fifteen years before hatching!Share with budding naturalists or use as an excellent guide for a woodland walk when the first rains of spring awaken this diverse and fascinating ecosystem. (glossary) (Informational picture book. 5-8) --Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)With poetic text and informative sidebars, this beautiful book delightfully captures the drama and mystery of vernal pools. Dive in and get lost in this magical world. --Joyce Sidman, Newbery Honor winning children's author and winner of the 2013 NCTE Award for Excellence in Children's Poetry

This book is beautifully written and illustrated. It's bound to be a resource for me and my grandchildren when we go outside to explore. Both adults and children love the sights, word sounds and action and information. There is plenty of learning and fun for the youngest naturalist as well as for the older brothers and sisters.I love that there is a teaching resource website listed for teachers. I'm going to give one to my grandchildren's kindergarten and 1st grade teachers.

This is a magical. eye-opening book. The text leads us through the seasons of life in the forest pools which dot our woodlands and which give birth and sustenance to creatures large and small. The illustrations, beyond being lovely, provide a window on the sentient nature of the life around us. My favorite page is the arrival in the pool of a big, hungry bull frog who comes there to lunch upon the pollywogs. Their worried eyes tell a story all their own. As I read the book to one of my granddaughters, I was grateful - for my own understanding and hers - for the scientific information provided along the way. Questions like, "What happens to the wood frogs when winter comes, Grandpa? Do they die?", need quick, reassuring answers. They're right there for you. Marvelous!

Both parents and the child loved the book. An excellent girt! One of the best presents ever, for a child who lives and breathes the woods of N.H. at 3 years!

Beautiful

Well written, engaging book about vernal pools in the northeast US. Sidebars give more detail for additional study. The pool narrates a year in its life, and it is poetic too. Used this with my elementary science classes.

This is a terrific book which is beautifully illustrated. A wonderful resource for parents and children who love the outdoors.

What do you get when you put a naturalist and science writer with an illustrator who always reveals the shining light of all mother nature's creatures? Throw in some interesting facts and empathetic energy and you get -- The Secret Pool by Kimberley Ridley and Rebekah Raye. From fairy shrimp to wood frogs, the wonders of ecology are abundant in vernal pools. For a budding 21st century ecologist, I couldn't imagine a more relevant and mysterious book to nurture their curiosity and inquiry. I'm now in love with every smiling critter in the vernal pool and armed with information that could help protect their crucial habitat. Every home with children and every science classroom would benefit greatly by adding this treasure to their book shelf. Brilliant topic to address with children and a validation to their natural tendencies to discover what is there in their world and to imagine what the eye can't see.

Beautiful illustrations.

This is a very complete book of the history from 30 AD going forward. Its a read that you set out on like a journey. Some days you read 10 pages and some days 20 but beyond that it takes time to assemble what was taking place shortly after the death of Christ. Its important to know as it leads into the discussions and theories of why in the 3rd century the collection of writings and readings became the bible. Read as many of the non books of the bible before you start this. It will give you a better back ground of the various views that were taking place and then read this so that you can grasp the history of the times.

Very pleased with this purchase. The book is a very interesting read. I loved the extra features provided, like tables that show you the parallel account in the Bible. A well constructed book too. Would definitely recommend if you have any interest in the Bible or Jewish history.

while a solidly bound book, and no doubt an authentic translation, it is translated in old English style, very difficult to understand for the modern English speaker. I would recommend other translations. my version sits unused as I order another of a modern translation.

THE NEW COMPLETE WORKS OF JOSEPHUSIf you have an avid interest in ancient history, especially the history of the Old Testament, the intertestament period between the Old and New Testaments, the events leading up to the final destruction of Jerusalem and the last stand of the Jewish zealots at Masada, then this is the book for you.Josephus was an unusual man who survived the ravishes of the war with the Romans and became the chronicler of Jewish and Roman history. He was a Jewish General feared and admired by his enemies, the Romans. When he was captured, calls for his execution went unheeded. He gave up the sword soaked in Roman blood to take up the pen of a historian. Some of his countrymen viewed him as a traitor.Within these pages are tales of intrigue in the royal courts, the madness of kings, the senseless slaughter of men, women and children, and interwoven with the great figures of history. Some passages are extremely long and border on tedium to the nth degree. However, even the tedium of details is worth the read.Other passages are just fascinating- Moses, the General of Egypt's army, wins a war against Ethiopians and marries Tharbis, Princess of Ethiopia. Their descendents would rule Ethiopia for centuries. There is a lot of sadness in these pages, especially the final destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. The Jewish nation was decimated in the first century. The last bastion of Jewish resistance was a thousand men, women and children who made their heroic stand against the approaching legions. The fateful decision by the leaders of Masada as the Romans prepared for the final assault will not only touch the heart, but it will reaffirm a basic principle of the human spirit- it is better to die free than become a slave of the oppressor. These stories and many others are found in these 1000 plus pages. This is a serious work for the equally serious reader.

I bought this for my Mother. I read a bit before I took it to her. I found it to be interesting not withstanding that I did not necessarily agree with his "take" on scripture. When Christians read this they need to understand that this will not necessarily be in agreement with traditional Christian views. None the less, it is a great insight to how the Hebrew people thought.I thought it was a very good historical view of Hebrew attitude and how it came about, at least from my Christian perspective. Knowing how people think helps to understand their reactions to others. There were alot of good footnotes that helps Christians understand the Hebrew line of thinking.I would recommend this highly to any one interested in history and understanding a different perspective on scripture.

I'm not quite sure how to place "The New Complete Works of Josephus" (Kregel Academic & Professional, 1999) among other editions of Josephus that are available. This work is a "revised" version of Whiston's 1737 translation, which has been "corrected" to an unknown degree by Paul L. Maier.Besides Josephus' writings, the book includes 7 "dissertations" on the text by Whiston such as "The testimonies of Josephus concerning Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, and James the Just, vindicated". These along with the footnotes reveal a translator anxious to defend the authenticity of his source text(s), the historical accuracy of Josephus, the correspondence of Josephus's accounts with the Old and New Testament, etc.Whiston seems to have a vested interest in Josephus as supporting and supplementing various Biblical accounts. He definitely comments upon the work from a Christian (he was actually an Arian) rather than a purely critical perspective. However, I see no reason at this time to believe this infects his translation with bias.Assuming that "Complete Works" has been completely corrected, it's greatest failing is being very difficult to read. Apparently, Whiston had something against periods, but really loved semicolons. Many a sentence runs on and on to paragraph length. The syntax is tortuous. The same publisher has two other editions of Josephus that are very different from Complete Works, yet seem very similar to each other. These are "Essential Works" (Josephus: The Essential Works) and "Essential Writings" (Josephus: The Essential Writings). Both are current editions using a translation by Paul L. Maier. The following is a sample of Maier's new translation followed by Whiston's. The text corresponds to Loeb Bk. VI, Ch. 14, 374-378From "Josephus: The Essential Writings", Kregel, 1990, ISBN 0825429641 (Maier translation)The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the bodies of the slain, they found those of Saul and his sons, and they cut off their heads and impaled their bodies on the walls of Bethshan. But when the Israelites of Jabesh-Gilead learned about this mutilation, the bravest of them marched all night to Bethshan, removed the bodies of Saul and his sons, and carried them to Jabesh, where they buried them. The enemy was either not able or not bold enough to stop them, because of their great courage.Saul came to this end, as Samuel had predicted, because of his disobedience regarding the Amalekites and his destruction of the high priest and his family. He reigned eighteen years during the lifetime of Samuel, and 22 more after his death. From "The New Complete Works of Josephus", Kregel, 1999, ISBN 0825429242 ("corrected" Whiston translation)On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip their enemies that were killed, they got the bodies of Saul and of his sons, and stripped them, and cut off their heads; and they sent messengers all about their country, to acquaint them that their enemies were fallen; and they dedicated their armor in the temple of Astarte, but hung their bodies on crosses at the walls of the city Beth Shan, which is now called Scythopolis. But when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard that they had dismembered the dead bodies of Saul and of his sons, they deemed it so horrid a thing to overlook this barbarity, and to suffer them to be without funeral rites, that the most courageous and hardy among them (and indeed that city had in it men that were very stout both in body and mind) journeyed all night, and came to Beth Shan, and approached the enemy's wall, and taking down the bodies of Saul and of his sons they caried them to Jabesh, while the enemy was not able enough or bold enough to hinder them, because of their great courage. So the people of Jabesh all wept and buried their bodies in the best place of their country, which was named Aroura; and they observed a public mourning for them seven days, with their wives and children, beating their breasts, and lamenting the king and his sons, without either tasting meat or drink [until evening].To this his end did Saul come, according to the prophecy of Samuel, because he disobeyed the commands of God about the Amalekites, and on the account of his destroying the family of Ahimelech the high priest, with Ahimelech himself, and the city of the high priests. Now Saul when he had reigned eighteen years while Samuel was alive, and after his death two [and twenty], ended his life in this manner.Even granting that the Maier translation is abridged, you can see that the Whiston translation suffers pitifully where readability is concerned. If you're still with me I'd say this. If you can afford it and need the complete works, buy the Loeb editions. I can't personally vouch for them, but in the introduction to "Complete Works" Maier himself states that those represent the "best English translation".If you don't need each and every line and want text you can actually parse, perhaps you should buy "Essential Works" or "Essential Writings". I can't tell you which, since I don't have them and I'm mystified as to what the difference might be. Of course, there are other translations and editions from other publishers of repute that are certainly comparable in readability. If you need (or want) every line for a very economical price, "Complete Works" will do.Good luck reading it.
