Gilbert King is the author of Beneath a Ruthless Sun, published by Riverhead Books in 2018. He is also the author of the New York Times bestseller, Devil in the Grove, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction in 2013. The book was also the runner-up in nonfiction for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, a finalist for both the Chautauqua Prize and the Edgar Award, and the gold medal winner in nonfiction for the Florida Book Awards. King has written about the race and criminal justice for the New York Times and the Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Smithsonian. He's also a featured contributor to The Marshall Project. Mable Norris Reese (Chesley) was my grandmother and I grew up with Jesse's story being a part of my family history. As a young girl, I met Jesse and "Aunt" Pearl when he was released from Chattahoochee and spent time with them before they moved to Green Cove Springs. Even with all that they had been through, they were the kindest, sweetest people I knew.After reading Gilbert's book, I'm horrified (but not surprised) at how much more there was to the story - I can certainly understand why my family would have censored so many things when talking to a young child. I still get chills thinking about how much my grandmother, grandfather, mom, Jesse, Aunt Pearl and Richard Graham went through to get Jesse's freedom.My grandmother would have been honored to have her story told by such a skilled and determined researcher and compelling storyteller as Gilbert King.
I read the entire book on the day it was published. Gilbert King did lengthy research and structured the story to keep the reader captivated. He made the scenes and people come alive ;it is a portrait of the worst in human nature and also the best.As a former southerner I remember the racism and prejudice which sickened me during those decades and therefore I can imagine the truth in this dark story.It’s a story with villains, heroes and innocents. I am glad that the author brought this story to light.I highly recommend this book.
There are a couple of important story threads in BENEATH A RUTHLESS SUN.However let's start at the beginning. Blanche Knowles, citrus baron Joe Knowles's wife, is raped in 1957, a Jim Crow year. She says it was a bushy-haired black manWillis McCall, the virulent racist sheriff of Lake County, Floridas rounds up every black man he can find. The two main suspects are Sam Wiley Odom, whose main crime seems to be his uppity attitude and Bubba Hawkins who happens to be related to Virgil W. Hawkins who had the audacity to apply to law school at the University of Florida.Then matters change. A white, mentally retarded man, Jesse Daniels, is arrested and promptly confesses, although he insists to his mother, his lawyers and everyone else he knows, he didn't do it. Now, why would a racist sheriff, who has gone so far as to murder black suspects, charge a white man with a crime the woman says a black man committed? She later changes her story, insisting it was so dark in the room she couldn't be sure who did it, but she identifies Jesse's voice. Remember the old saying, “Nothing is as it seems.â€Jesse avoids a trial by being found mentally incompetent to stand trial, and he is sent to Chattahoochee, the Florida insane asylum where he spends fourteen years, lumped in with violent criminals since he was charged with rape. Jesse's mother and just about everybody else he knows insists he wouldn't even know how to commit rape, nor would he hurt a fly.Pearl Daniels finds a confidant in Newspaperwoman, Mabel Norris Reese who spends the next fourteen years trying to get Jesse out of Chattahoochee. She has evidence he didn't do it, but McCall and his henchman, county attorney, Gordon G. Odom Jr. won't even let Blanche see her son.So . . . will Jesse ever get out? Will Willis McCall ever pay for his murderous behavior. I have to say I wanted to see him skinned alive, boiled in oil, and drawn and quartered. This is not a novel; this stuff actually happened. Willis McCall made Bull Conner look like Mary Poppins.Oh, yeah, there's one more ingredient in this mud hole. Joe Knowles was a known ladies man. How does that enter into the picture and why did Blanche insist a white man raped her when she knew that wasn't true? These questions will keep you turning pages.
If this book does not make you angry, nothing will. One really needs to go back and read the first book about this lawless lawman and the havoc he brought on anyone that got in his way. Murder In The Grove is the first book and I am still loaning it out to friends that have not read it yet. Beneath A Ruthless Sun picks up the story of how one corrupt sheriff ran an entire county and literally got away with murder. This book and the one before it provides an interesting look at what can happen when good people do nothing.
Fascinating book that kept me turning the pages. And the astonishing thing is that the story is true! The outrageous behavior of above-the-law Sheriff Willis McCall kept reminding me of the notorious (and recently pardoned) Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio doesn't seem to have been a multiple murderer, like McCall, but he was another example of the public official who thinks he isn't governed by the law. And (also like McCall) who keeps getting re-elected by racist voters. The twists and turns of the narrative will keep you up past your bedtime. And may give you nightmares.
Beneath a Ruthless Sun is incredibly well-written. King expertly exposes another dark secret about race driven corruption in Lake County, Florida, and our hearts reach out to those victimized by McCall and Oldham, among others.If happy endings are lacking in this story, we can take comfort in the knowledge that history is more accurately told, and so those who may have “gotten away with it†will now be remembered for their cruelty and wrong doings versus the hero’s they claimed to be thanks to King’s effort.I highly recommend this book to readers of both fiction and nonfiction of justice, race, Florida’s history, heroic journalism, history of mental institutions, and anyone seeking the truth about Florida’s corruption, and those who fought against it.

I absolutely love adult coloring books and journaling so my next review is will be a journaling bible that is also a coloring bible. It is the NIV Beautiful Work Coloring Bible. This bible brings together two of my favorite things, journaling and coloring.The bible has pages with quotes that you can color as well as a few full pages to color. There are also plenty of blank spaces to do your own journaling and art work. The pages are thicker than usual bible pages to enable coloring. I would suggest using micron pens or pencils. Water color will buckle the pages but if that doesn’t bother you it makes from some very pretty journaling. I don’t think I would use any kind of marker but that is just my opinion. I have seen some people coat the pages with gesso or something similar to keep bleed through from happening.The word art and art work throughout the book is done by various artists so there is a variety of styles. There is an index listing the artist and their pages at the end of the bible. I will say the scripture is quite small and a little hard on my older eyes. There are no really study sources in the bible such as a concordance or anything similar. It is basically scripture with coloring spaces and journaling spaces and that is about all. There is a table of measurements included.If you like journaling and coloring as well as NIV you will probably like this version. I have a KJV coloring and journaling bible that I actually prefer but I really like that I have this one too. I received this bible from booklookbloggers.com in exchange for an honest review.
I've had many bibles over the years but none ever stuck around for long because either it was paperback or I couldn't understand the translation. I really wanted a bible that would be my permanent bible that I could keep for years and highlight, write, etc in. This bible is it! I love that is a hardcover bible and it had an 1 inch margin that you can write notes in. The front cover of the bible is a design of Proverbs 3:5-6 I personally like it but if you want the look of a more traditional bible you won't like it.PROS: hardcover & sturdy, nice journaling space on the side to write quick notes, adds more to the reading experience with featured drawings of verses, one column text meaning it's not too much on one page and the font is big enough to read without hurting your eyes. It also comes with a cute satin bookmark that is attached to it so you can keep your place!CONS: there is only one con (hence only one start deducted) I have is the pages are still thin like every other bible. So be careful because yes they will/may rip if you're turning too fast. Yes markers and highlighters will bleed through. I used a special non-bleed through bible highlighter and it still showed through.
I first bought the Audible version, only to find they didn't separate the chapters into tracks. Since faith does indeed come from hearing the Word of God (as well as reading it!), I tried again, and bought the Complete NIV Audio Bible on MP3 CD (ISBN-10: 1444786407) here on Amazon, and they DID divide each chapter into a separate track. Also, each chapter starts with the name of the book, then the chapter number, so if you want to randomize chapters, you'll know what book each one is from. I was looking for a Bible that I could take with me when I travel but it also had to have the words of Jesus in red.I couldn't have asked for a more perfect Bible.
I purchased this NIV Bible through a recommendation that this version was easier to understand. I was brought up Catholic, but I am in no way a devout follower. Lately I have wanted to read the Bible in its entirety to better understand Christianity and it’s basis so that I may strengthen my faith. I can honestly say that this is the most beautiful Bible I have ever held. The drawings are lovely and inspiring, and the translation is stunningly fluid. I appreciate the space to write, and the thinness of the pages doesn’t bother me. Although it’s not “Catholic approvedâ€, I have no problem reading this Bible if it makes me want to learn and grow. I just started and already I don’t want to put it down. It reads like a favorite story. Thank you.

Stunning bible! I waited months for it to be fulfilled and I'd wait longer if I had to. I love the feel of the textured cover, the colors are perfectly muted and Iam so excited to explore every book's beautiful illustrations. Note the tabs were purchased separately off Etsy but match perfectly.
Received my copy this afternoon (Woo, 2-day Prime shipping!) and I already love it! The illustrations are so beautiful and really do bring the words to life. I was originally searching for a Bible that had wide margins for note-taking only, but I stumbled upon these and fell in love! I like that the pages are bright white and ever so slightly thicker than traditional "onion skin" Bible pages. I have used my Prismacolor pencils to color a page and they work beautifully! They show up nice and bright and don't show through on the other side. Also, the book itself is very attractive without the dust jacket! It features a verse from Psalms on the front and title is only printed on the side, which I prefer; I didn't like that some of the other available creative Bibles had "My Coloring Bible" emblazoned across the front. Makes you feel kinda silly. :PAll-in-all, this is a great purchase! The price is unbelievable and the product is beautiful. However, be warned that the print in this Bible is VERY SMALL and some of the illustrations have incredibly small lettering that may be difficult to color.

I bought the Kindle version of this book as part of the required reading list for a promotional exam. Overall, the book reads well, is laid out well, and is very educational. I found it very insightful.HOWEVER, after renting the Kindle version of the book I discovered that not all the photos are in the Kindle version. Some areas are grayed out and it states the pictures are not available due to copyright issues. This is a seemingly minor issue but all sections of the book are testable and I'm sure they could find a way to include something about a photo in the test. Also, the pictures might help demonstrate something that's presented In the book. I would think if you paid for use of the book you would get all the content.I called Amazon and tech support kept trying to fix it. Finally, I just had them cancel the order and bought the actual book. They were very helpful and ultimately we reached a resolution.Afterwards, I talked to a coworker who also had the Kindle book and the same issue so it does not appear to be something tech support could fix.I do recommend the book, just beware of this issue when making your decision to buy the book or the Kindle edition.
Overall, the book was well structured, read rather easily, and had good material. As a just recently certified basic firefighter looking into developing a career-long library, I purchased this book along with many others. The information is thorough enough for leaders to read but still approachable enough for the rookie person. There were parts that seemed to just drone on the same topic or theme, but I guess that happens with most books that serve as a 'textbook' on a topic material. The images were outdated by today's standard but it is afterall a title from the late 90's, early '00s.
I loved so much about this book as I always have in reading past writings.

My husband used this for his city fire department captain's test and he did great so I'll give this a high rating.
I had typed in second edition for a class. This was a first edition and due to changes between editions, wasn't useable to prepare for a certification test.
Ordered for our Training Library. Firefighter needed for a class.
