After her mom Juliette dies and Eva is clearing out her house, she finds a trunk full of slips of paper containing dreams her mom had but didn't get to achieve. Using money left to her from the will, Eva makes it her mission to reach all the dreams her mom had, traveling the world and checking them off one by one on postcards she addresses to her mom. She finds a travel agency that includes agents who will escort travelers to their various destinations, and an unfortunate incident leaves Eva stuck with Thor- a Dane whose good looks match up to his godly name, but he is rude and arrogant, at least to Eva's first impression!Eva is rather reserved and prefers to stay at home in her pj's, so this round-the-world trip is a huge change for her. In order to attain some of her mom's dreams, such as singing on top of the Eiffel Tower and skydiving, Eva has to be brave and live life like her mom did, without fear. I loved visiting all of the different locations Eva and Thor traveled to on this journey. Each location and dream Juliette had is described in such a way you honestly feel you are right there with them. I especially loved their visit in Amsterdam with the tulips, flower parade, and the fact they got to sleep in a windmill-I didn't even know you could do that! It was so fun and memorable following Eva around as she made her mom's dreams come true, and along the way Eva realizes some dreams of her own. While reading this I was rooting not only for Eva as she lived out her mom's dreams, but for her and Thor as well. The chemistry was obvious between the two of them, but they are both so stubborn and afraid of getting hurt. This book had me laughing and crying all the way to the end. The travelling aspect was really neat, but I also loved the romance of course as well. It was both sweet and a little steamy! I really enjoyed the epilogue but hope to see more of these characters in upcoming books!I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Where to even begin. Love love LOVED this book. Holly Martin wrote thé must read novel for this summer. It's an absolute gem.We meet our main character, Eva, when she's about to start crossing off some outrageous things on someone else's bucket list. Original to say the least, as a reader you're already set for journey full of unexpected twists and turns. Eva is a very easy to love character who feels like a friend, or at least very familiar from the start. And then there's Thor. Pfew. Now I'm definitely at a loss for words. How to describe the Thor-phenomenon?! I was completely smitten. After reading this book, I feel as if I've already had my summer romance this year (don't tell my husband) and boy was it a steamy one. I felt every spark there was between him and Eva and I fell head over heals for their romance. Or was it Thor himself I fell for? Wouldn't be hard, seeing as he looked as either/both/one of the Hemsworth brothers in my imagination. In all seriousness, Holly Martin's writing as always transports you right to the heart of the story. You feel the characters' emotions, you believe their dreams and you wish for their hopes and dreams. Someone almost had to physically remove the book from my hands for me to stop reading. I just couldn't get enough. The fact that Eva is going on these crazy travels, pushing herself doing these (sometimes) ridiculous activities in memory of her mum adds another layer to this story. It's incredibly moving and beautiful. This story will definitely stay with you long after reading that final chapter. I'm always excited about a new Holly Martin book, but now I definitely cannot wait to read more!Emotional, passionate, funny, and very, very addictive - 'The Summer of Chasing Dreams' is an absolute must read this season.

I love Holly Martin's books, and this one is no exception. I began reading it, and I was so enthralled that I couldn't put it down, so I stayed up all night and read it. It is worth the bags under my eyes! This book gives you a warm feeling inside, and you fall in love with the characters instantly. I highly recommend this and all of Holly's books (I read them all!) I am so thankful to Holly for sharing her gift as a writer with me and other readers. Can't wait to see what's next!

Well I've said it before and I'll say it again, Holly Martin knows how to write some slow burn romances ending in some decent sex scenes! I love that about her writing and in this novel we have some added travel plans to enjoy along the way as well. Who wouldn't want to spend a book travelling the world with a main character and her travel expert companion? Great plot!Eva Blue was an interesting character because she does go on a big journey over the course of this book, both metaphorically as well as literally. At the beginning of the book she leads a fairly sheltered life, as if to counteract her Mum's wild ways. She doesn't seem very worldly wise and often seems shocked by things around her. Her comments about different things in the world and the people she meets can sometimes come off as fairly judgemental and can verge on the sexist or homophobic but have no fear, she does develop and grow by the end of the book. The travel in the book is so much fun and we either get to hear about it in the form of a narrative of Eva travelling or through Eva's postcards to her recently deceased mother. I liked hearing about Eva's experiences through her own eyes and seeing what particular things she is willing to take risks on and which she isn't. Thor is also an interesting character, one can't help but picture Chris Hemsworth when reading about him. He has a great relationship with his family but I didn't always agree with the ways in which he was willing to manipulate situations in order to spend more time with Eva. I'm sure he's not some kind of predator but I couldn't be positive. On this whole this was a lovely read. The lack of diversity is made up for in the romance and the sex scenes. The sex scenes are always safe as well, utilising condoms and other methods of contraception was always mentioned. I loved the travel and would like to find out everything that happened when Eva and Thor travelled across the pond!

I feel terrible for what Kaitlin went through, but this isn't a good book. Her post-Sandy Hook experience with PTSD is godawful, but unfortunately Kaitlin, or whomever wrote this for her, just isn't a writer. You can safely skip it.

I was disappointed. The level-headed actions that Ms. Roig took on that tragic December morning are to be greatly admired. Despite being the first classroom available to the gunman, she and her children were able to hide themselves away in time. How much of it was luck (maybe her proximity to the front made it easier to interpret the gravity of the situation) is hard to say, but as a classroom teacher I hope I could react as swiftly as she. The account of her thinking process during the incident was well written and gripping to read. It was clear, too, that she genuinely cared about her students and loved teaching. What she and her students experienced was horrendous; a life changing event. I can understand how she would be hypersensitive upon returning to school and the need to feel safe. I appreciate that she recognized the emotional impact the event had on her students and championed their needs to the administration. Whether she took it too far, who knows? The administration obviously thought so. While I admire her Classes 4 Classes.org and all she has done to promote compassion and empathy, I felt that too much of the book was devoted to that. My expectations did not jive with what the book had to offer. I was hoping to hear more about the people involved both before and after that December day. For example, even though she and Victoria Soto shared a common doorway, she barely spoke of herexcept about her reaction to the funeral and that Ms. Soto was a good teacher. What about the other victims such as the principal, the specialist, the aide, and the temporary teacher? How about the custodian? He played a very large part in the ordeal. I never expected to hear much about the children who died. That would have been too much. However, It would have been nice to hear about some of the other teachers who lived through this and how they coped. No names were needed. I was hoping for a larger and more complete scope of the book. By the end of the book I had had enough of Classes 4 Classes. I wish Kaitlyn Roig-DeBellis the best and hope that her future work continues to help others. I believe that she truly wants to help. While a part of the book hit the mark, it left me unsatisfied.

Enjoyed reading. A teacher who did everything possible to protect her students from a madman. No matter what, these students and teacher will always be connected.

This book shows how we can all make something positive from something that is tragic. It's easy to focus on the negative. It takes strength to get past it and move forward.

This book was encouraging in that this teacher saved her students by her quick thinking to hide them in the small bathroom attached to her classroom. However, I was appalled at the attitude of the school administrator when the teacher let her know the safety needs of her traumatized students. There is nothing written in this book that shows that anyone stood up for the teacher and her students. This situation ruined this book for me.

Great read

Was a very good book! Highly recommend.

Amazing and powerful story of hope.

Ok compilation of the UCC and Res2 of contracts; you could perhaps find them online or through weslaw/Lexis electronically though.

Allowed to use during final exam!

I don't know how to review this! What a pain this was to read for contracts, which is challenging enough as it is! The language is terrible and beyond confusing. Even my contracts professor who identifies as a contract scholar who has clerked for Posner says these are written poorly for their purpose.Like I said, I don't know how this is to be reviewed. It's not as if I had a choice in buying this text for enjoyment. I had to buy it and I had to read it, whether I liked it or not. If you're looking for something to supplement your understanding of contracts I wouldn't recommend this unless you have legal experience. Or love to read extremely complicated texts. For for the poor souls in law school, this is a must for contracts class.

Condition as described. Very helpful for my Contracts class.

It has the restatement (second), UCC, lots of stuff. Don't buy a newer edition. They're all the same.

This is not the newest edition, but if you able to get an older edition, this one works great! My professor actually uses the 2012 edition, and I have had no problems with my edition corresponding with his! It arrived in a timely manner and was in great condition for a used text book!

Good for a comprehensive study of Restatement & UCC Article 2. However, it is not as helpful for the study of other UCC sections such as secured transactions and payment systems as these sections are significantly redacted in this book. I attempted to use it for my negotiable instruments/payment systems and secured transactions classes and found that is was missing many essential code sections in Article 9 and Articles 3.

Your prof will say if you need it and it will live up to the expectations of the class. There are q&a's throughout that my prof used so that was useful.

The Noetics of Nature: Environmental Philosophy and the Holy Beauty of the Visible (Groundworks: Ecological Issues in Philosophy and Theology)

Review

“This splendid book makes an original and important contribution to environmental philosophy. It develops an argument the seeds for which were sown by the author’s earlier work: that a fruitful approach to environmental ethics, or a proper understanding of 'the Good' with respect to nature, requires a deeper grounding in environmental aesthetics, or a clearer vision of 'the Beautiful,' which is itself ultimately rooted in an 'environmental theology.' With grace and conviction, Foltz shows that it is only by cultivating a sense of 'the Holy' that we can hope to restore a right relation to nature and to ourselves." (―Christopher Dustin College of the Holy Cross)“Bruce Foltz’s book The Noetics of Nature: Environmental Philosophy and the Holy Beauty of the Visible is a tour de force, an intellectual and cultural history of nature in the West. Its original and in-depth scholarship re-centers environmental philosophy on the marginalized but crucial intersection of Hebrew and Greek thought in the West, viewed with continuity through the patristic and Byzantine eras and beyond into modern Russian philosophy, as an alternative to modern Western materialism.” (―Alfred Siewers Bucknell University)Bruce Foltz has written an original and compelling book that deserves wide attention. Drawing on Greek Patristic thought, recent environmental writers, Orthodox theology and aesthetics, and the wide sweep of philosophy from the ancient Greeks to today’s phenomenology, Foltz opens multiple, fresh lines of insight and inquiry. The Noetics of Nature is an impressive achievement and a much-needed, new voice in current conversations on the healing of earth. (―Norman Wirzba Duke Divinity School)

This book is amazing. On numerous occasions, the content was so beautiful that it actually hurt; my heart truly ached. It reminded me of what St. John of the Cross describes as an arrow that, when it wounds you it heals you. What else can I say?

This is a remarkable and sustained work of ecological ethics, informed and sustained by the Eastern Orthodox Christian theological tradition. Intelligent, erudite, thoughtful, and numinous, it is one of the best works to be written on the subject of ecology since Erazim Kohak's under-appreciated _The Embers and the Stars_.

Professor Foltz in his recent book ‘The Noetics of Nature’ deftly performs the task of reversing the currents of our social imagination. Reuniting our language of possibilities to lost antiphonies between Nature and our deepest affective identities, the author guides us through a corrective history based on his long philosophical journey of ‘Sailing to Byzantium’. Professor Foltz provides us with an opening to further fields of inquiry which already knows it’s fruit - a crucial resetting of our desire, done in such a way as to save us from ourselves. By kindling our ontological depths with the beauty of ‘Theoria Physike’ the author opens the window for new personal fulfillment through our own hermeneutical readings and dialogues with what is most hauntingly real, Nature herself. Professor Foltz and his Patristic references point to Nature as the source which returns to us our own noetic capacities. His argument does not ring shallow but illumines a much needed alternative to Lynn White Jr.’s view of Christianity as a blight on the physical world. The author has given us a future based on renewing our mind and heart through a schooling with Nature. All things lead to a phenomenology of beauty. A beauty that grows as our noetic capacities are activated, thus leaving behind promethean materialism as a pale shadow below the reflective surface of our new adventure of ‘being’. I am blessed to have read this work and to be launched onto the waves of an actual lake in an actual pristine wilderness. Professor Foltz’s Noetics of Nature promises to be a wonderful guide.

This is an outstanding book. It brings Eastern Orthodox thought to bear on one of the most pressing issues of modern philosophy, that of how to properly understand humanity's relationship to nature. Foltz sees modern thought as plagued by the tendency to regard nature as simply a resource for satisfying our desires, rather than a reality that exists in its own right. He argues that to overcome this tendency requires purifying the heart from the passions that corrupt our perception of ourselves and the world around us. He develops this theme by drawing widely on both Orthodox authors (the Philokalia, Maximus, Florensky, Bulgakov) and modern nature authors such as John Muir and Annie Dillard. He also critiques one-sided views of the relationship between Christianity and the natural environment, pointing out how they have overlooked the distinctive standpoint of Eastern Orthodoxy. Whether you're interested in environmental philosophy, Orthodox thought, or both, this is a book not to be missed.

Amazon.com Review

In God's Perfect Child: Living and Dying in the Christian Science Church, Caroline Fraser delivers the most intelligent, humane, and even-handed history yet published of this important American religion. God's Perfect Child begins by telling the life story of Mary Baker Eddy, who founded Christian Science in 1879. Eddy built the church from a fringe sect into a mainstream religion whose wealth and power exceeded that of many Protestant denominations in the mid-20th century--and were considerably augmented by the church's once-popular newspaper, the Christian Science Monitor. Fraser, a literary critic and poet who was raised a Christian Scientist, has a relentless analytic bent and an acute eye for physical detail, both of which are in evidence on every page of this book. Her stories of parents whose attempts at faith-healing resulted in their children's deaths are especially poignant. These stories also illuminate and analyze the fears and pains that have plagued many Christian Scientists who subscribe to Eddy's belief that individuals can control their physical destiny by force of faith. Ultimately, Fraser has little sympathy for the obdurate self-reliance advocated by Christian Scientist doctrine, which she sees as a forerunner to the extremist paranoia of contemporary cults. "The suggestibility, infatuation, and enthusiasm that sparked Christian Science ... lies behind our current anxious fixations on imaginary perils and medical conspiracies," Fraser writes. "Florid though they may seem, such fears can have far from imaginary consequences." The goal of Fraser's book is to track down and annihilate irrational fears in the religion of her childhood; her reason for doing so, however, exudes an undeniably spiritual grace: "Should we continue to pursue [these fears], our providences will surely grow ever more remarkable." --Michael Joseph Gross

Freelance writer Fraser spent her childhood practicing the teachings of Christian Science. She was told that she was "God's Perfect Child" and that any errors she made, including being carsick every Sunday as she and her family traveled to her grandparents' house, were due to her "Mortal Mind." Although she left the church before she entered college, Fraser acknowledges that Christian Science is "profoundly complex" and "worth understanding in its own right." She sets out in this scintillating religious history to show the good, but especially the harm, that Christian Science has done. She opens with a brief biography of Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, whose Science and Health is studied reverentially by church members. She reveals Baker Eddy's fear of the material world and the ways in which she fashioned this fear into a religion that resists the advances of the scientific age. Fraser traces the development of Christian Science from a small sect to today's large political and religious organization that attracts numerous followers eager to embrace its messages of human perfectibility and self-reliance. In the course of her history, the author also briefly examines the lives of some famous Christian ScientistsADoris Day, Carol Channing and Mr. Ed's Alan YoungAand their contributions to the church. But, Fraser's history is also a rousing expos?. Not only does she reveal what she sees as Mary Baker Eddy's neuroses, but she also delves into what she calls the church's "pernicious" teachings that illness is not real (it's only the "Mortal Mind" obscuring the "Divine Mind") and that people can heal themselves without the benefit of medical help. Fraser combines episodes from her own experience with an evenhanded historical analysis in this first-rate social and religious history. (Aug.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The negative reviews of this book on here are disingenuous, unintelligent, and shrill. But they are typical. The Church and its members don't want to own up to how dangerous it is adhering to the strictest tenets of Christian Science. Of course, anyone who believes that diabetes, a broken bone, a terminal illness, or any other life-threatening illnesses can be done away with by wishing and praying need a serious reality check. My paternal grandmother was a Christian Science practitioner. She told me I could give a "demonstration" by curing myself of my congenital hearing defect. These are the issues behind the religion, its founder, and the Church, that Caroline Fraser has so scrupulously, relentlessly researched - and is the basis for this spellbinding book.Fraser's level of scholarship, reasoning, analysis, presentation, and cogent, stylish writing is, in a word, extraordinary. Her work here, without (naturally) the "cooperation" of the Church, is of an unbelievable breadth, reporting, and super-completeness. Every possible angle is investigated, elaborated upon, and made manifestly clear. You can almost discern Fraser's incredulous tone in places where the ignorance and shocking indifference directed toward those in need of medical care which results in horrific tragedy; not just dying, but of needless suffering due to withholding of medications. It is difficult to read some of the sheer stupidity of the actions of some of the "followers," and their heinous complacency and indifference to obviously ill and suffering people; your heart breaks for the many children in these pages who didn't have to die. Then there is the matter of money, and "mishandled" funds. Lawsuits. Infighting in the Church. All of it, appalling. The Church did in fact have a chance to redeem itself. The most revealing factor in this examination, of great interest, is that one of the Church's teachers, Arthur Corey, had the potential to modernize the extremist, fear-propagating tenets of Christian Science, but - no surprise - he was vilified and stymied by the powers that be running the institution. As Fraser writes: "But Corey also had an unerring sense of where the Christian Science movement had gone wrong. He identified the Church's gradual insistence after (Mary Baker) Eddy's death on "radical reliance" as a bad political mistake, forcing Scientists to take a hard line that made the religion unappealing to outsiders and critics. Corey is virtually the only Christian Scientist ever to acknowledge honestly and directly the dangers that the religion posed to children, publishing a description of children who had suffered and died as a result of overzealous reliance on Christian Science. ""The irony of Arthur Corey's life and career as an outcast Christian Scientist lies in the fact that he represented, on many levels, the best qualities of his religion. He embodied the kindness, compassion, and temperateness of the moderate Scientist, the Scientist who chooses not to force his beliefs on others or push his patients and students beyond what they can stand. He acknowledged, as no Christian Scientist publicly has before or since, the mental anguish that is caused by not knowing the potential severity of any given illness: "I have seen more than one patient relieved of unbearable terror by a medical diagnosis which revealed that a particular disorder was benign or malignant," he wrote. "It is nonsense to think the doctors produce the disease." His teachings stripped the religion of its darkest impulses toward paranoia and extremism. He stood for what Christian Science might have been at its best: a devotion to exploring the meaning of life, health and true morality. Arthur Corey died in 1977, dismissed by the Church but, nonetheless, a popular and enthusiastic Christian Science teacher to the end." (end quote)I have known many Christian Scientists who visit their doctors regularly and get the proper medical intervention as needed. The religion, for them, is greatly helpful in giving them inner strength to cope with life. My fear, though, is that innocent people, especially children, will continue to be the institution's casualties.Until now, I had never understood why my grandmother functioned the way she did; she alienated practically everyone in her midst by being a fanatic of CS, and caused much ill-will and bad tidings. She only became human and real when she wasn't under CS's dictum. I only wonder what she would have been like had she not been so *fanatical,* so unyielding. This peerless, supremely presented study of Fraser's can hardly be bettered - and may stand as the definitive history and examination of Christian Science.

This book is so good! I've read most of the books for ex-Scientists and have found this to be the best. It is objective and very well written. I especially enjoyed the history of the church and the biographical section about Mrs. Eddy. While a Scientist I was never able to get through her authorized biographies because I just couldn't believe them. This one feels real to me. The church has revised its way of dealing with children, (My state COP rep is telling the Scientists in my area that she only will treat a child for 24 hours, after that she tells the parents to take them to a doctor), but there is still lots of pressure on adults to stay the course even if CS isn't helping them. This is a very interesting read and I highly recommend it.

If you're wanting a secular, well-written and well-researched read of Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Science this is an excellent read.

I feel that this book succeeds almost perfectly in accomplishing its goal. It has a point of view which is clearly stated and is most brilliant in making accessible to the non-CS reader some of the historical and contemporary issues in the faith. I thought Fraser was very even handed in her sympathies to those reformers who have tried to heal the church. I did not come away with a negative opinion of CS but I do now have a better understanding of the faith as a whole. Fraser's book is a wake up call;I think the church could show a great deal of maturity by taking this critique and using it to constructively go forward. The CS church near where I live is sparsely attended and the membership is very old. It will not be long until it is silent. A great, thought provoking book!

Great read for ex-Christian Scientists. Very well-researched and informative.

After reading this book, I had to contact Caroline Fraser and tell her how spot on her book was!!! I was also raised as a Christian Scientist, from a mixed marriage ( a term I had never heard before) with my mom a Strict True Believer and my dad not). Although it seemed that Caroline's experience was more extreme than mine, both me and my brother "saw through these beliefs" by Jr High. We realized that "praying away" broken or sprained ankles, fingers, torn ligaments, was NOT going to work. (we both played at high level of sports). Also, mumps, measles and flu did NOT get better by praying or pretending they did not exist. When I went to a doctor (on my own) with a 103 temperature because of tonsillitis in High School and one shot of an antibiotic cured it over night, both me and my brother quite the religion right there!!!. My mom eventually contracted very bad arthritis, and after years of praying, even she turned to help from modern medicine. My brother died in 1986 from Hereditary Hemocromotosis, which I found out I had. If I had stayed with CS, I would NOT be writing this at a healthy age of 63.Having been brought up as a Christian Scientist, I did find her information on the inner workings of the church and the power struggle very interesting. It is well worth reading. Christian Science is NOT a "cult" and I do find some very good things in it's teachings, but I and thankful I did not raise my children in that religion.ps. I still have my mom's "Science and Health" and do read it once in a while.John M. Wedeward

As an ex-Christian Scientist raised by CS parents this book frames the whole crazy experience of growing up and growing out of supernatural beliefs in the broader historical context of the origins of the religion right up to modern day psuedoscience and woo movements of today that owe much to Christian Science,
