Jewish law, its history, sources and principles, has been the subject of many books by many rabbis and scholars. However, most of the works by the traditional Jewish scholars - including the seminal work by Sherirah Gaon and the intellectual masterpiece by Maimonides - present a theology or philosophy whose goal is to promote and explain Judaism as conceived by the writer, and not a true history. Many stressed the importance of the Bible and revelation and the significance of the Oral Law which is not in the Torah, rather than an objective scientific history. Menachem Elon, an ordained rabbi, served on the Supreme Court of Israel since 1977 and was its Deputy President since 1988. This book won the Israel Prize in 1979. The two translators are distinguished American lawyers. Bernard Auerbach was a professor of law at the University of Maryland and a rabbi. Melvin J. Sykes is one of the most sought-after attorneys to handle appeals before Maryland's top court.
Menachem Elon's work on Jewish Law is exceptional. The work provides the most comprehensive discussion of Jewish law in English that I have ever seen. This work was recommended by a law school professor many years ago. I never cease going back to it. The discussions regarding each of the major legal sources along with their relevant commentaries is invaluable for learning what one should "know" to be conversant in this topic. The footnotes are also excellent and provide quick references to relevant passages in the original sources. This is not light reading and needs to approached when one is fresh. Given that, if one has a desire to get an overview of the history and inner workings of Jewish law, there is no better source of which I can think to recommend.

Amazing Glaze is an amazingly beautiful book both in the content and way it was written as well as the way it was photographed. I had the benefit of taking a glazing class with the author. The class transformed my love/hate relationship with glazing to one of love/joy! Readers can now benefit from Gabriel’s knowledge because it’s like taking the class with him. While I thought my years of study and glaze testing were deep, I had never heard of specific gravity before and had relied on older methods to visualize glaze consistency i.e., dipping my hand in the glaze and watching it run off. This not a particularly reliable nor healthy method to check glaze consistency to say the least. What’s a hydrometer you you say? Read and learn young grasshopper. Another epiphany for me was creating meaningful test tiles that reflect the type of work I do (these can then be sold as miniatures of your work—that is of course after documenting successes and failures). I have buckets of my old test tiles from years of testing. And while I gain inspiration from looking at the beautiful combinations, the test tiles are taking up valuable shelf space.In addition to all the practical information about glaze and glazing, Gabriel also generously shares his bountiful knowledge, techniques, glaze recipes and glaze combinations so that you too can achieve some amazing results! Get the book, you won’t regret it! It may very well change your perspective on glazes and glazing and thereby elevate your work to amazing as well!
This book encourages and teaches. I hate glazing - it's where all your hard work can end up just "not there"....but this book offers lessons on nearly every aspect of glazing - from reading the recipe, to adjusting thickness and application. Recipes are included for a wide range of firing with photographs of the results. I am encouraged after reading this - not so sure I'm eager to glaze, but at least I'll be better prepared. Highly recommended.
This book is a gorgeous breath of fresh air from other ceramics books. Besides being visually STUNNING (the cover is even cooler in real life), the text is written in a unique and way that is both academic and rigorous while breaking down terms and ideas for the layman in a far less formal manner that makes the reader feel like a peer, an equal, instead of an insubordinate who is lucky to just witness someone's knowledge. Gabriel Kline is more than a potter- dude's a writer, and I cannot think of a book I would recommend more. Honestly, I think this would make a fantastic textbook at the college level for a intro to glazing/glaze chemistry class. Incredible value in with amazing photos and contributors.
I am a pretty much a newbie to the pottery world. This book has become my new bible for glazing pottery.It is extremely well put together and filled with great information. The gallery photos of the ceramic pottery and sculpture are vibrant and high quality. Even the example photos showing the the various techniques and processes are beautiful. I highly recommend this book to both newbie beginners and old hands at the art.
A must-have for every potter, Amazing Glaze demystifies the glazing process in simple, non-technical, playful prose by glaze guru Gabriel Kline of Odyssey Clayworks. It will motivate even the most reluctant "glaze hater" back into the glaze lab, lured by inspiring photos of the glazing process and glazes running the full gamut from low to high fire, oxidation/reduction, raku, salt/soda and wood. Kline has shared (with credit to creators) recipes that other potters might well keep for themselves, and this generosity of spirit infuses the text throughout. As Ben Carter, the author of _Mastering the Potter's Wheel_, writes "This book made me fall in love with glaze all over again."
This book is amazing! I have been throwing pots for about five years, and glazing has always been a mystery to me... This book covers so many different techniques, in a very understandable step by step process, and has uncovered the mystery to me of layering and getting depth out of my glazes, among many other mysteries! I found this book very helpful and very beautifully done. It also makes a great gift! I gave this book to my dad, a potter of 50 years, and he loves it! If you are interested in pottery and the process of glazing or know someone who is a potter this book is a must!

I love Ellen DeGeneres's work so reading her books was a no brainer. I read her book, The Funny Thing Is... when it released about ten years ago. I can't say that I remember a ton about the book but I do remember that I enjoyed it. Enough to want to read any future books of hers which leads to Seriously... I'm Kidding.If you're going into Seriously... I'm Kidding expecting a memoir, well, it's not your typical memoir. I'd say this is a series of essays and I use the term essays loosely (I do love this structure here) that can be described as half memoir half inspiration/motivational with humor on every page. Yes, Ellen talks about her time working on American Idol and whether or not Ellen and Portia will have kids, as well as why. Stuff like that. For me though, there's really nothing in this book I didn't already know. This wasn't disappointing to discover as I was more curious about Ellen's delivery of the humor which I'll get to in a moment. But ultimately, this book was more inspiring and funny than a behind the scenes look at Ellen's life and/or any issues she's overcome over the past few years.Aside from the memoir side of things, there's a ton of advice on self esteem, self worth, and positivity. I was expecting Ellen to touch on these topics and I was expecting positivity to be the theme of the book no matter what since that's what Ellen is all about. I didn't realize that the extent of her inspirational words would be so large. These are all good things but I did think, "Am I reading the introduction to a self help book?" at times in the beginning of the book.Now worth noting is how funny this book is. There's humor in every chapter but some chapters are about absolutely nothing significant and exist solely for a punchline. Even so, everything Ellen says leads to a joke. Everything. There is not a moment of rest with the comedy here. It's very fast paced and goofy. You don't get a break from the funny. There's barely time to recover from the previous joke before another one comes. It's a lot of funny. Which you either love, can appreciate, or don't find this approach to comedy works for you. I appreciate it. Which made this a very quick read.The best part? It's all Ellen. There's a writing team behind her talk show and of course she's the head of that team but her book is a totally different animal and a more solitary creative experience so it's refreshing to hear Ellen's voice and only Ellen's voice in this medium. So, would I recommend this book? If you're looking to learn more about Ellen, nothing serious of course, just watch her talk show to get it straight from her in real time. If you've got two or three hours to kill and are looking for more laughs from Ellen, go right ahead.
I got this audio book mostly because it's read by Ellen DeGeneres. I love her, I think she's hilarious, and so I thought that she'd be great to listen to as if she were putting on a show on CD. This is not the case.Unfortunately, as much as I love Ellen, her audio book sounds stilted like, well, she's READING it. The jokes are a little like jokes you plant in a speech that has a monotonous edge to it that totally ruins the entire thing.The entire book wasn't like that, but the lead up to the punch line falls flat when she can't get that "I'm reading you a funny joke but I have to be careful I don't spit in the microphone so I'm going to read with one tone of voice for places I might spit whilst laughing" out of her voice! It's so frustrating!The book itself was a compilation of seemingly random chapters, some very short and some long. There's a long period of silence for a `meditation' period as well as one chapter she says `hey, look in the printed copy because we're gonna skip reading them here' (this is the `text lingo' chapter). Luckily, I had access to the book, but it's kind of a waste of your time to try and track it down. There's also a chapter that is all about sounds which is perfect for the audio book and not so much for the printed version.Plus, it's short. I mean, REALLY short. Like we're talking three hours short. And I honestly didn't like it enough to listen to it again. It is definitely a woman-empowering book and some of the chapters I laughed out loud but most I really wanted to skip.I'd borrow it from the library before you decide to buy the audio book. But a decent read nonetheless.
I'm a big Ellen Degeneres fan, but this book left me wanting. I watch her show every day and reading this book was like re-watching all of her monologues. Don't get me wrong. She is quite possibly the funniest person around. I laugh out loud at her antics. She rules daytime talk TV. (I personally believe Oprah left TV because of Ellen. She couldn't best Ellen's higher ratings.) I will continue watching her show and maybe I will try reading another book. Maybe I'll try one of her audio books narrated by her. I have always preferred watching her. Sometimes what makes her so funny is the 'way' she says it along with the look on her face.
Every one on the planet knows who Ellen is and how funny she is. This book is everything you would expect it to be. Have to say though, at times I wasn't sure of she was taking the piss or not. I sure don't believe most of it any way. I think it was all for laughs, maybe I'm wrong, but at least the laughs were there. If you're looking for her personal life and 'real-life' moments, keep looking. You will be sorely disappointed if you're looking for a glimpse into her life or what makes her tick. This book is nothing but laughs and some insanity. That's entertainment though.I flew through this pretty fast, because it was hilarious. It was exactly what I needed at the time.3.5/5
I'm a HUGE Ellen fan! After hearing her mention books she published in the past and making references to them, I decided to check them out online. Once on Amazon, I used the "Look Inside" function and was able to read a little of the book and it made me laugh... so I decided to purchase this book. I was happy to find out she's just as funny as an author as she is a tv talk show host! I love this book and whenever I need to cheer myself up or have a good laugh, I pick her book up and start reading my favorite sections again! If you love Ellen (or even just good old comedy), you'll love this book! Give it a try!

Too often, these memoirs wallow in their own misery, manipulating the reader into feeling sympathy for the author rather than any kind of genuine empathy. The reader may feel bad for the struggles of the author, but that's it. Rather than spend page after page discussing the struggles and complications of being born with HIV, Rawl talks about her daily medicinal cocktail as casually as she talks about her excitement at entering middle school, her meeting her best friend, her practicing for cheerleading tryouts, her competing in beauty pageants. Rawl draws the reader in with her enthusiasm. She doesn't dwell on her HIV status, rather making it just another part of her life. And she is immediately likable. She's an upbeat kid whose attitude you can't help but smile at.When the shift comes, when her best friend decides to tell everyone that Rawl is HIV-positive, the book strikes an unusual balance between the ensuing problems and the notion that life goes on. She's got problems on her hands, not only from her peers but also from the adults that are supposed to be educating her, but she's also got other things going on, the typical ups and downs of a teenager's life. In fact, Rawl does not treat her HIV status as something special, as something for which she is being bullied. Her HIV is secondary to the fact that she is being bullied, by students and educators alike.And it's here that I think so many children and teenagers can really connect with the book. Kids can be phenomenally cruel, but I don't believe kids are inherently malicious. Some of them are, certainly, but cruelty is far too often a learned behavior. If kids are not taught how to be decent--and by taught, I mean shown by adults--then they will often be cruel because they don't know any better. They often don't realize how cruel they're being or even that they are being cruel. And all you have to do to see where this comes from is log onto Facebook and take a look at how many adults have absolutely no sense of decency or empathy. Adults who dislike immigrants because they're immigrants teach kids to dislike immigrants because they're immigrants. Adults who dislike gays because they're gay teach kids to dislike gays because they're gay.Rawl beautifully illustrates this miseducation by showing how first the guidance counselor and then the entire school administration failed her. First they ignored her problems, and then they acted like she was the problem. How could the girl possibly win in that situation? How could any student? When the administration blames a student for his or her problems, what are the other students to think? "The adults don't like her, so we're not going to like her. They mistreat her, so we're going to mistreat her." That administration had an opportunity, a teachable moment, and they squandered it. They couldn't be bothered.As an educator myself, that section really upset me. I was actually shaking, I was so angry. That school's treatment of Rawl was an abject failure on every conceivable level.Contrast that with Rawl's next school. Before she even meets with the administration, they have taken steps to educate themselves, and subsequently, they take steps to educate the student body. That's what education is supposed to do: with all due respect to the Core, education is about teaching students to be decent, about viewing issues from multiple angles, about seeing matters from different perspectives, about understanding where someone else is coming from. Learning facts, even learning to think, is not enough if at the end of the day, you cannot see that disliking someone for something so arbitrary as their race or their gender or their religion is utterly ridiculous. You don't have to agree with someone to be decent to that person.And lest we believe that it's all sun and roses for Rawl, she does try to kill herself by overdose. Even after her life straightens out, the pain of what she went through at middle school remains, and she tries to escape it. Fortunately, she fails, and what she experiences afterwards helps her to forgive the people who failed her, the people who hurt her, because that's the only thing you can do. You cannot change the past, you cannot go back and change other people, but you can forgive the people who have hurt you and you can move on.Rawl becomes a voice for students who feel they don't have a voice, and time after time, she wonders what she has to say, why anyone would care to listen to her story. The answer is simple: it's because millions of kids go through the same thing every day, different faces but the same story, and as Rawl points out, way too many of them don't make it.Paige Rawl's Positive is a five out of five. I cannot remember the last time I was this emotionally affected by a memoir. When I finished, my immediate thought was that every student needs to read this book, every educator needs to read this book, every parent needs to read this book. Go out and get yourself a copy. As a grandmother whose 12 year old adopted grandson was recently diagnosed with HIV, Paige's book was extremely important reading. She clearly spelled out the various instances of bullying she experienced, and how/why her own reaction to these changed over time. It's obvious to me that kids with HIV have to grow up very quickly - probably too quickly - in terms of understanding the societal stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. And how they do this without developing self-hatred - just as gay children have had to do - is a horrific challenge. Paige spells all this out so beautifully - how she went from her darkest days to sunshine. I'm so grateful to her for putting this experience into words for the world.
This book is fantastic. I could not put it down and read it all within a day. Paige has been through so much in her short life and has blossomed into such an amazing person. There are parts in the book that will make you so angry at how our would views anyone different. Through all the bullying and heart break Paige has endured over the years, she shows us how you can be bigger then your enemies and your own fears and make something of yourself no matter the circumstances. I have recommended this book to everyone I know, especially families with children as they would benefit from reading another young adults journey through hardships. Love the book and love the Author! If I could give it 10 stars I would!

We all know that bullying exists, but do we really take the time to think about the long term effect it has on the victims? Paige Rawl has been there and is bravely and poignantly sharing her story, striving to make a difference in this complicated world we live in. She shows how searching for the positive side makes us better people and helps us rise above those who suffer from fear of all that is different and unknown. Paige Rawl is my new hero and an inspiration for all.
I've never understood meanness of any kind. This poor family having to endure worse than meanness, I don't know the word to use... This young woman lets you know how it feels like to be the target of adult & peer bullying. I have a new Mom hero, right up there with Ryan White`s Mom. This is a fast read, thank goodness, and you find your self cheering for both. I'm so glad Paige wrote this, people need to understand that words DO hurt, they Do devastate , they DO !

The beginning tells you what you can eat and what to avoid. The entire book is wonderful.

Terrific recipes! So many great ideas that are both easy and tasty. My teenage son, who is picky, even ate some of the food I cooked using the recipes from this book. The citrus chicken wings were my favorite; in fact, all the poultry recipes I've tried so far have been delicious. The recipes are easy to follow, and the ingredients are easy to find. A must have for new keto dieters.
Looks like lots of good information and tasty sounding recipes. Three stars however because I cannot find serving size or number of servings on the recipes. For example. one recipe calls for 1 1/2 lbs. of ground beef. How many servings should that be?

I heard about Code Girls several months before publication, and was determined to read it as soon as possible. My mother was one of the code breakers at Arlington Hall, a largely civilian group of women who worked under the auspices of the US Army. She fit the typical profile of Arlington Hall recruits: a teacher who left her job at a girls’ boarding school in Virginia to not only serve her country, but do more exciting and challenging work than was available to most women in peacetime. (The military recruited heavily for women with four-year degrees, which were rare at the time but required for teachers.) Arlington Hall was a place where a woman could fulfill her intellectual potential, where she was encouraged to learn and do as much as possible, as fast as possible, and work as hard as possible. The code breakers’ work was crucial to winning the war.According to this book, the women worked for seven days straight, with their eighth “off†day spent on shopping, errands, and probably housework as well. However, my mother did not mind the long hours. On her commute from Washington, she even ran into Eleanor Roosevelt one morning around 6; Roosevelt said she took early walks to evade the Secret Service. Like other women in this book, my mother roomed with another woman who was also a code breaker and who became a close friend, and she enjoyed the camaraderie of her whole code-breaking group.Author Liza Mundy weaves a number of narrative strands. She discusses the work done at not only Arlington Hall, but at the separate Navy code-breaking facility (where most code breakers were WAVES) and at Sugar Camp. Sugar Camp was an NCR rustic retreat outside Dayton, Ohio used in peacetime to train salesmen; during the war it housed WAVES who wired the bombes that NCR manufactured to break the German Enigma codes. Mundy gives as much technical detail on code breaking as the average, nonspecialist reader can probably handle. This includes work done during World War 1 and between the wars. Some World War 1 code breakers carried right on into World War 2.I was disappointed that almost all the World War 2 information focuses on the Japanese codes. It’s true that the Japanese codes were extremely challenging. They were complex, the Japanese used several different codes, and the codes were changed constantly. It was hard to find Americans who knew Japanese. The code breakers were given some basic relevant vocabulary. Then--Mundy mentions only in passing, late in the book--the decoded messages were passed to translators, many of them missionaries or children of missionaries who had lived in Japan. Mundy also mentions somewhere that the messages of many other countries were decoded at Arlington Hall. (I’d assume this was also true of the Navy facility.) But that’s all she says. The organization of the code-breaking facilities seems to have been complex, with people working in many different groups for both efficiency and secrecy. I gained little sense of the overall organization or what the groups were. I have no idea what my mother worked on, but my guess is messages in French. She had a BA in French, she was fluent in French, and I’d assume Vichy France was pumping out messages at the same phenomenal rate as other countries.Mundy may have focused primarily on the Japanese code-breaking group due to her choice to tell the personal stories of a number of code breakers, especially Dorothy (Dot) Braden, now Dorothy Braden Bruce. Dot worked in a Japanese group and Mundy interviewed her extensively for this book. Dot’s personal life included her close friendship with her roommate, code breaker Ruth Weston; Dot’s on-off engagement to a soldier named George Rush; and Dot’s postwar marriage to another soldier named Jim Bruce. Dot also had brothers in the war. In between handling all that coded text, Dot and other code breakers wrote huge numbers of letters, to husbands, fiancés, brothers, even soldiers they’d never met who wanted pen pals. The workforce was mostly female—my mother said there was only one man in her group, an elderly Egyptologist who had worked on cracking hieroglyphics. But the code breakers’ lives were full of men, to the extent that (Mundy relates) pregnancies were not uncommon among unmarried women at Arlington Hall. (The Navy was much tighter and required even married pregnant women to quit work.) I can’t help wondering whether my 30-ish mother was also feverishly writing to soldiers and dating numerous men when they were on leave. Certainly not my father—they did not meet till after the war and in any case, he was rejected by the draft due to a medical condition.Although Mundy goes back and forth between code-breaking organizations and various personal stories, she manages to move through the war narrative more or less chronologically. Her descriptions of military and naval action are mostly focused on the end of the war, especially the excitements of D-Day and the Japanese surrender. My mother said that two of her coworkers always joked that “by the end of the war they’d be cutting out paper dolls.†When my mother and others came in after their day off, they discovered those two coworkers had spent that day making paper dolls, using every scrap of paper they’d saved up, and had hung the dolls all over the office. Mundy mentions that people danced in the streets of Washington.However relieved the women code breakers were, their immediate experiences were not altogether joyous. The Arlington Hall workers were given a speech encouraging them all to quit work as soon as possible. Most did, at least after they married or had a child. (A few did stay into the Cold War and beyond.) The US mounted a reverse recruitment campaign, telling all women it was their patriotic duty to turn over their jobs to returning men. Women married the fiancés they’d been corresponding with and proceeded to have babies. Some were happy housewives; some were not. Many, including my mother, missed the sense of challenge and purpose they’d had as code breakers, and went back to work. After the war my mother got a graduate degree in mathematics, which my father (a physicist) never understood. Her verbal skills were so much stronger, he said; why was she determined to study mathematics? But mathematics was needed and valued at Arlington Hall, and many women did not discover their aptitude for it until they worked there. My mother waited till her children were old enough, then spent the rest of her career as a college math professor. Most of the code breakers still alive are now in assisted living facilities. It’s good that Mundy interviewed some, because they were told their work was top secret and should never, ever be revealed. Many revealed nothing substantive while they were alive, including my mother, though it was clearly one of the happiest times of her life.When I was 12 or 13, my mother sat me down and taught me the rudiments of code breaking. This was just the beginning, she said; the work at Arlington Hall was much harder. What she was teaching me was not classified. But I should learn something about breaking codes, because I’d never know when I might need to.
In the same vein as "Hidden Figures", this history of the female codebreakers that contributed significantly to the progress of WWII is long overdue. The author interviewed a number of the codebreakers and their families and researched the topic extensively when the previously classified information was finally declassified. The codebreakers were sworn to silence while employed and for many years afterwards; in most cases their husbands and families had no idea of the importance and complexity of the job the young women were doing during the war. It was generally believed that they had fulfilled some menial clerical function.The author incorporates personal information from a number of the "code girls" and factual information on many others. Women were responsible for many of the most important code breaking accomplishments during the war, and their efforts definitely helped the U.S. to win the war on both fronts. They actually learned of the Japanese surrender before many in the government and military did!Women were recruited from colleges and universities, and many had been trained as teachers, one of the few occupations available to educated women at the time. They underwent extensive screening and training to ensure that they were fit for the work. They arrived in Washington, D.C. in droves and were housed in hastily constructed rather Spartan accommodations. The work was scheduled 24 hours a day, and housing was so limited that it wasn't uncommon for multiple girls to use the same bed. They were housed and fed, and provided with a wage that was more than any of them could ever had made as teachers; nevertheless their pay rate was still 25-30% less than men doing the same work. It was an exciting time to be in the Capitol, and the women also had lively social lives, some of them being courted by multiple men in uniform and all of them maintaining a steady correspondence with one or more men who were serving the country.The technical information relating to the strategy and tactics of code breaking was quite detailed, but somewhat inscrutable to me so I skimmed quickly some of those sections; suffice it to say that it required an extreme amount of organization, attention to detail, a mathematical orientation, razor sharp memories and ability to see patterns, both small and large.I found the book quite riveting, with enough personal detail to enliven the story, and enough technical detail to establish just how serious and demanding their work was. I can definitely imagine that a movie will be made of this exciting and interesting chapter in our nation's history.
I've a library of 100s of WWII books, this one rates near the top. Oddly, it tells a broad brush of WWII that is highly accurate, carries all the major details, and flows naturally as part of the back story. This author earns her pay even just on research, yet it's also very well written and even a page turner. It also has something very valuable to me as a man, it gives me a perspective into what happens for females when provided the same opportunities I was provided as a man. That brings me to pause, because I took for granted my privilege as a white male throughout my career. I somehow learned the same lesson that this book teaches because throughout my now past career in logic and programming, when in a position to hire, I more often found females were those who did more to further technical teams and projects. I started to read this because of my insatiable quest for WWII information, but it ended up reframing my perspective on my career and accomplishments due to the contributions of women. It shouldn't be, but that is a humbling realization because it forces respect to come to the surface in a way I missed when it was happening. It's a sad thing to ponder now in light of our society devolving away from these lessons learned, but perhaps that just makes the book more timely.
I was lucky enough to meet a code breaker in a German class. She was my mother’s age, but we still became great friends. I admired her for her fluent German and her quick mind. I was honored to attend her funeral when she passed away at 93. She was buried with full military honors in Arlington Cemetery. That is why it is so great to read about what she did.
