The Rose That Grew From Concrete, by Tupac Shakur

From School Library Journal

YA-A collection of poetry written by the rapper between 1989 and 1991, before he became famous. The poems are passionate, sometimes angry, and often compelling. Selections are reproduced from the originals in Shakur's handwriting, personalized by distinctive spelling and the use of ideographs (a drawing of an eye for I, etc.), and complete with scratch outs and corrections. With the exception of "In the Event of My Demise," all of the pieces are accompanied by typed text, which leaves his spelling intact. Some poems are also accompanied by his drawings. A few black-and-white photographs appear throughout. A preface by Shakur's mother, a foreword by Nikki Giovanni, and an introduction by his manager, Leila Steinburg, in whose writing group the poems were written, complete this unique volume.Susan Salpini, Purcellville Library, VA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The physical book is pretty small but wide, looks like a coffee table book which is fitting because it's full of shorts poems. I like holding it, it's really easy to flip through and read. Content-wise I like it because I'm a fan, and this is a book for fans. I'm also a fan of poetry in itself from legends to great stand-up including youth, and a lot of this content in similar to what you'll hear on Brave New Voices and Button Poetry, and that's fine with me because I definitely appreciate passion youth and young adult poets that reflect on their personal lives and communities. I can't really understand people who like poetry disliking this, because nothing indicates this is professional or spectacular poetry, it just has a lot of heart and soul to it like Tupac itself. It's like his journal, and I love that. Some poems are definitely better than others and there's plenty to chose from at this very cheap price. If you're a fan, I don't see why even profession/amateur critics wouldn't buy this. It's very interesting to hear how he speaks to himself. These poems came from his personal poetry notebooks, so his writing are his thoughts-- which I totally love.

I heard about Tupac’s poetry book years ago and wanted to find it. I’d forgotten about it until my nephew who didn’t know Tupac the way my generation did, brought up that he was “ deep”. I agreed then told him he wrote poetry. That jogged my memory and I quickly looked on Amazon and found this. I ordered two copies , one for my nephew. Tupac was extremely poetic and to say he was a deep thinker is truly an understatement. I am sad that this brilliant light is gone , but I’m thankful he left us with a piece of the diamond.

As an aspiring poet I must say I never knew how deep this man was. It's like I fell in love with him all over again reading this book. The man is was a true artist, he was an intellect and a passionate soul. He motivates me to keep writing. Rest In Peace!!

I love Tupac, the artist, but I've never read his book, although, I was aware he wrote poetry. As much as I like him, I'm an avid reader and very expressive in my thoughts, good or bad, regardless of how much I like the person. I read the book in one day and find myself going back to re-read a lot of the poems; I love the book! Adding his real, personal writing pages and translating them as well, for individuals who can't read his handwriting, is an awesome touch, especially for his fans and supporters; it gives the book a more personal feel. Regardless, if you listen to his music or not, I suggest reading the book anyway.

As with the total profound, resonate, and necessity of Tupac's artistry and (most importantly) his spirit - led genius, this book was yet another foray into his mind/soul. The balm that it's expression offered/gave/crashed into all the lives & was effected by Tupac 'the gift' is as unforgettable, loved, and ultimately as legendary as the young man himself.Perhaps for those who read and share it alike, it will do so much more for and with another young male who like Tupac is full of promise, talents, gifts, and innate spiritual awareness capable of affecting and propelling people in purpose-driven positions instead of hearding them or allowing the 'permissive' hearding of our young males (particularly Black and Hispanic-) into the acclimation of devaluation, prisons, or graves. How mighty could we all be (been) and feel (or felt), if that be the reality of their lives (or had been Tupac's reality)?Buy and read now!!

I have a lot of love and a lot of respect for Tupac, and out of honesty to this claim, I have to be honest about this book. Very few of these works are fully developed as he wrote most of them when he was eighteen or nineteen, and I think they can only be appreciated, for the most part, by seeing them in this context. The introductory writings by his mother and Nikki Giovanni are very good, but I would warn against approaching this collection as the work of a mature and fully developed artist. I love his political works the most, but I had hoped for poetry more layered than his song lyrics when this was not generally so. The majority of the text seems devoted to love, relationships, etc., and there is some real angst and real struggle in many of his poems, which is not to be unexpected when one considers the very real turbulence of his life. I think it could possibly be a very good book to use with those youth who respect 'Pac, for you do very much get to see the human reality beyond the braggadocious facade, the brokenness from which there arose strength, the complexity of such a revolutionary.

This was a gift for my roommate. He's a huge fan and was genuinely delighted when he open it. I had a chance to leaf through it. I was always familiar with 2 Pac but never really dived into his library of music. But reading some of these you get more insight into the artist. Buy it. It's great on a bookshelf or on a coffee table

This is a beautiful, must have item for any fan. The poems are beautiful and let you feel Tupac. It is neat to see them as copies of the originals in his own hand writing. There are even some doodles on pages, so it really feels personal.I bought this for my daughter, as she is a huge Tupac fan and she absolutely loved, loved, loved it. She is 16 years old, so she was just barely born when he was killed, but since about 3 years ago, she has become so totally interested in him, his life, his music - anything about him and all of the details/conspiracies around his death.I really thought she was going to pee her pants as she unwrapped this book and started flipping through the pages. She was elated with it.I paged through it too, and while I don't mind his music, I am not a *huge* fan, but I did find the poems interesting and saw it as a great window into his thoughts and ideas. It is definitely something that every fan should have. It is good if you just like poetry as well. Tupac is very underestimated. People just think of the rapper, thug type guy. That's not really what he was all about.
