This book, while not an easy read, is a good compilation of source material, experience, and theological views on the challenges facing all of us, but particularly American Christians in the 21st century. Focusing on economic and ecological justice, weaving in questions where answers are not always clear, and challenging all of us to rethink how we view the (especially) non-human world in terms of justice and love, this book would make an excellent text for a Christian ethics class and a good resource for any thinking human person in the world today. I especially liked the practical application of feminist/womanist theology in helping us understand the need for empathy with our neighbors whom we (Americans) exploit and oppress.
Very dense, excellent treatment of Christian theology, ethics, and the current ecological crisis. I'm only about 70 pages into the book, and find it very engaging, challenging, and extremely appropriate given the negative impact of developed nations on the poor of the world and our Christian responsibilities, and ways to understand and address, the structural injustices elaborated in the book.
This book is the roadmap (sans the car) or maybe the blueprint to put humans on the way to "civilized", sustainable living w/ the rest of creation/existance. The book helps each unique individual sacrifice the short term (and deathly) hedonistic lifestyle, and make the transition to gain the long run and infinite "life", coexisting among the equally important other species and inanimate material world. Western society (but not everyone in the West) lives in a falsely satisfactory existence. The majority are suffering from cravings to build for themselves permanence where it does not nor cannot exist, and at the same time destroying life for all others. Moe-Lobeda leads us to the realities of the world/universe, and how we can find true satisfaction by living w/ all other and not living above all other.It certainly is not a dislike, but a limitation that the book focuses mainly on the enlightened Christian perspective. I have nothing (except a few horrendous events) against Christians. I am a Christian (and Jewish, and Muslim, and Buddhist, and trying to become Hindu). But no book could or should try to be everything to everyone.
Thoroughly documented. Compelling. This book just blew me out of the water. It challenges my complacency. I am shocked at what we are and continue to do. I plan to make some changes in my life.
This work is foundational for an understanding of global economic justice and ecological issues. It is written in a humane, accessible and realistic manner. I believe I will long consider it one of the most influential books for my worldview. I resonate with it in so many and such deep ways. I am very grateful to the author.
I love Cynthia's heart and passion for this topic. I will forever remember her definitions for Justice and for Neighbor-love. Sometimes she gets a little mystical and vague for me, but on the whole she is spot on regarding the evil innate in our mutually supportive politics and lifestyle.
The author's comes from a religious and ethical background and her holistic approach shows that because we are all connected on our fragile planet, everything we do affects everyone else. For that reason it is important to consider the meaning of "Love thy neighbor" and to think about the broadest definition of who our neighbor is. When we understand that even nature is our neighbor we begin to see that we can change our practices in order to help all our neighbors.
This is a challenging, yet hope-filled call to all people to consider the effects of our U.S. consumerist lifestyle on other peoples and on our planet. Personal stories of those made poor, insights into the global economic system and feminist theological reflection on our U.S. reality are accompanied by information about worldwide movements and organizations already working towards positive change in our world so that all may live.

I received this book today only to find out that the lettering in some pages washed off like if the printer ran out of ink. The entire book seems like if it was printed at a regular printing machine, i disregarded that detail, just to find out later that page 586 fell out of the book like if it was never attached to it, or glued to it, and i just opened this book for the first time because i received it today! I'm going to return this printed copy of the book and get the hardcover version.
WARNING! Do not buy the paperback version. After five weeks of gentle use--it never left my desk--pages began falling out. Not tearing out, but simply falling out, as if the binding glue had failed. Amazon, to their credit, allowed me to return the paperback copy past the normal 30 day limit. Thank you Amaz-ing-on. Still need the book--hopefully the hardcopy will be more durable.
This is another text book that is actually fun to read. The front contains basic scientific information about plants. Leaf structure and how it is defined, reproduction, flower structure, etc. The body of the book is species of plants and cultivars. There are not any color pictures or photographs. Merely line drawing for individual leaves and flowers. It is arranged in alphabetical order based on Latin name. There is cross reference in the back that has common names.I use this book all the time because I am always trying to identify a species of plant, or a cultivar within a species. Mostly for customers, but also myself. It is also quite helpful in determining what cultivars are likely to do well, and which ones have underperformed in the landscape (in the opinion of the author of course). The author frequently expresses his opinion, and he does so in an entertaining fashion that makes using this book fun. There are lists of what plants are quick references for what plants work well in different soil or moisture condition. What zone plants are suited to. Some indicate air pollution tolerance. There is a wealth of information in this publication.If you are an amateur looking for an easy identification guide, or something with great photos, this is not going to suit your needs. While I usually classify Dr. Dirr's books as additions to the basic gardening library, I have to include this one in the basic book section--one you should have. Most all of us have woody landscape plants and among us the knowledge of how to care for them is mixed. Having been associated with the Master Gardener Volunteer program in three states, I find this book to contain the answers to many relevant questions that presented to the call in volunteers.
excellent reference book. Just keep in mind that Dr. Dirr is coming from a Georgia climate perspective so keep that in mind. The book has all the most common woody landscaping plants.
The book is fantastic...it is extensive, very detailed and precise, the drawings are accurate and lovely. All in all, I'm very pleased with the book and am certain it will be very useful among my reference books.The bad things was that about the last fourth of the pages had a severe crease in them that made it hard to use for a long time. I put it under a large stack of books and used it from that weighted stack with much effort. It has straightened out a great deal, but is still not perfect. I needed it immediately or I would have refused to accept it, and returned it.
This was a "recommended" book for a horticulture class. I'm so glad I bought it. The information is presented in a friendly style, like you're sitting down for a cup of coffee with the author and he's telling you about the interesting plants he has seen and grown. Details of various cultivars make this a valuable reference that I'm sure I'll use frequently.
At first glance this book does not look like much next to the stack of glossy, color gardening books. Spend a half-hour with it and it's value becomes apparent. No photos but that doesn't hurt this book's usefulness at all. The drawings in this book are extremely helpful. I have an "Elm thing" that a relative was positive was an American Elm. I had my doubts since I think it was planted by bird droppings. I opened up the manual and looked at those line drawings and saw the new buds on Siberian Elm are spherical and the ones on American are pointed. The buds on my tree are round. A positive ID.Information on how plants do in California is rather sketchy but there are tidbits in this book you won't find anywhere else.This is no dry treatise: When Dirr gets on the subject of a plant he hates, it makes entertaining reading. Some of his commentary is thought provoking as well.I bought the hardcover. Someone mentioned the thin pages. At 1200 or so pages they need to be to save your back. The cover looks like it can be wiped off with a damp cloth and the binding is sewn, not glued. With reasonable care this book will last a long time.Should be on every gardener's shelf.

Kathy Hudson's On Walnut Hill: The Evolution of a Garden is one of those rare garden books that does far more than tell the story of a showcase garden. Hudson's spare prose, combined with award-winning landscape photographer Roger Foley's lush photos, paint a verbal and visual history of this spectacular garden, which utterly transformed a sunny hillside near Baltimore over the course of 46 years.It helped, of course, that the young couple who bought the house and grounds in 1969 -- and did all the work themselves for years -- was able, later, to fund what started as a dawn-to-dusk, weekend hobby into what ultimately became their life's passion and work.It also helped that early on they began working with a European garden designer who was one of the pioneers advocating the replacement of staid, static rectangular patches of lawn and flower beds with sumptuous curvilinear sweeps of perennial plantings and ornamental grasses.Designer Kurt Bluemel laid out an overarching plan for A.C. and Penney Hubbard's sunny, two-acre site: an evergreen background, a middle ground of shrubs like rhododendrons, viburnums and azaleas, and a foreground of annuals and perennials. I heard the authors speak at the Ivy League Vegan Conference in 2015 and was blown away by their collective knowledge. They take two very difficult topics and make sense out of their position – the position I share with them. It is apparent that Colb and Dorf are brilliant minds who tirelessly researched this topic and took what could be construed as a dichotomy and turned it into easily understood concepts.
Excellent, groundbreaking treatment of a difficult topic. The authors are fair to both animal rights proponents and anti-abortion proponents, and members of both groups would benefit from the authors' insights. The book is philosophically rigorous while remaining accessible to a wide audience.
Neither of the topics covered are the ones anyone brings up for fun. These topics hit people in places they'd rather not discuss, much less discover. It doesn't matter where you stand on either topic, this book presents real arguments on the topics that may help shape where you're mind is, or reinforce what you're already firm in believing. I'm thankful for this book, and for the authors brilliantly thoughtful presentation on two very difficult topics.
I found this book to be insightful, thought provoking and all around brilliant. It sets out fairly complex arguments clearly and that is no easy task. Although one might not expect such a book to be "gripping," it actually is. It juxtaposes the moral issues involved in both abortion and animal rights in a very thoughtful and thought provoking manner and treats both with great sensitivity. This is an important book for challenging, examining and/or reaffirming one's views on both issues. Highly recommend and commend it.
This is a very thoughtful treatment of a complex and understandably disturbing topic. I look forward to the day when reverence for all life is the nature of things, when this is what we choose because this who we are.
The authors take on two extraordinarily controversial topics, engage sympathetically with all sides of both issues, and explain why both standard views (abortion is immoral, consuming animals is moral) are ultimately indefensible. "But it's a life!" is not a sufficient answer to either question.
This is a remarkable book, eminently readable, that elegantly brings together the deepest moral and legal puzzles about human rights, the rights of the unborn, and the rights of sentient non-human beings. I couldn't put it down.

A good book i deserve! Lovely! This is my go to book for my instant pot. In fact, I bought the instant pot at her recommendation in her columns in the New York Times. Some excellent recipes - the Vietnamese Chicken soup, the red lentil soup (with mint oil which I skipped, bbq chicken was super easy (used bottled sauce), steel cut oatmeal. Some negatives- chicken curry had too many onions, the mac and cheese burned due to lack of liquid, the artichokes were bland. There are many recipes I look forward to trying - there are not too many books on instant pot out there so this is a must despite the quibbles. I like how she narrates the recipe, giving alternative options and also that there is a picture for each recipe. Well done! Amazing book!
