WOW!!! I couldn't put it down. SO sad and hard to believe that someone can be that cruel to a child. Its heartbreaking! How she continued to care for her mother through out her life I'll never understand. I hope shes in hell where she belongs. Not only the physical abuse but the mental is atrocious !I truly feel for her. I finished the book over a week ago and it still makes me so sad when clips from the book pop into my head. I know shes moved on, and grown up and has a life of her own now, but how she made it out is a miracle. She deserves the best life ever now and I hope shes living it!
I wish I could write a positive review because it did seem to get so many. I love autobiographies, & people who come to thrive after rough childhoods are so inspiring. But this book just seemed as if it had one shocking abuse claim after the next; I found myself wondering how real it really was. Then she claimed (*spoiler!) to have predicted Kennedy’s assasination?! I just found it to be very exaggerated. Hard to believe all of it. Sorry. Read Rabbit, the autobiography of Ms Pat instead!
Most of my reading was done with tear-filled eyes, a very heavy and broken heart, and a sickening feeling. Unfortunately, I found the book to be very similar to my upbringing (mother and grand-father), which has given me a stronger sense to be gentler, more patient, and more attentive to my children -- as this is the absolute worst life that any child could possibly live through. I am speechless in my prayers and wishes for Vanessa who survived her horrible upbringing, but still managed to muster through and never once gave up hope. Bless you and may God forever take great care of you and reserve a special pair of golden wings for you.Every parent should brave through the readings of this book and think twice before having, adopting, or raising children AND assess ALL who will be around the children in their care. Moreover, the abusers of children should die a long, torturous and cruel death in the town square - where all can see what will happen when one abuses a child.
This is one book I read through in a single day. It was terribly sad, but also terribly all too real. There are people in the world like Vanessa's evil step mother, and their victims all too often cover up the horror and dread they face each day, fearing an even greater punishment if they tell anyone. And worse, when they do break their silence, they are not believed by the very people who should protect them. I'm glad Vanessa found happiness at last, although she did take care of her insane step mother til the end and even facing death, this crazy evil woman would not give Vanessa the answers she sought. This book is a testament to the will of the human spirit to survive.I had to wonder, however, if the memories of foretelling the future weren't Vanessa's rewriting of her memory (not intentionally) and the zoning out in a daze sounded like disassociation to me - a precursor sometimes to multiple personalities. The visions and imaginary companions were a little schizophrenic. Not denying that premonitions and communication with spirits do exist, however, the human mind will conjure up whatever it has to to survive. It would be understandable, under the circumstances, if this is how she dealt with things, to keep her sanity (sort of).None of that matters, however, as this book is a great look inside the more dysfunctional of families (although I'd faint if I met a *functional* family.) I'm a RN who works with families in crisis when all the secrets and skeletons fall out of the closet and you have to wonder if these people are putting you on. Sadly they are not. This sort of thing does exist and happens more often than you'd think.
I've read this book 2x now, and I still think it is an amazing memoir. I guess I have a strong stomach because it wasn't a difficult read for me. It was actually difficult for me to put the book down! I'm very happy that Steel was able to FINALLY have the life she deserves after everything she has been through, but I still can't understand how she can just move on with her life and still talk to those who abused her and let her down. I realize that in the time period this was set it, things like that would be shameful to talk about, but still...I have a difficult time accepting it.I read almost all of the terrible reviews and saw that most people seem to think something is wrong with her mentioning her psychic abilities...I'm not sure why though. One person even said she would never have bought the book if she had known. As a young child she was badly abused mentally and physically, so how is it surprising she speaks of instances where she has an out-of-body experience? I know I have had moments like that when I have fallen off of a horse or had something frightening happen, so it is perfectly plausible that she experienced the same thing, but more intense. I don't think there is anything wrong with her mentioning any of this, I feel it only adds to the story of her horror, making it seem as if her mother literally drove her insane (although, I don't think that was the case). I really enjoyed this book a great deal, but it bothers me that NO ONE really tried to help her get away even though they knew something was going on...perhaps if it were a different time, her childhood could have been salvaged.I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone!

I am teaching English to a friend and the book is working very well. I would have rated it higher except the description said it came with a CD and the cover says CD included. When it arrived without a CD, I though there might be instructions in the book to download but I have not been able to find anything on how to do it. If anyone can tell me, I'd really appreciate it.
This was purchased as a gift and I was very impressed with how it was written. This book is great for someone who speaks Spanish and is trying to learn English. It is easy to follow and after looking all over, this was by far, the best book for Spanish speakers to learn English.

This book is beautifully written and illustrated. It's bound to be a resource for me and my grandchildren when we go outside to explore. Both adults and children love the sights, word sounds and action and information. There is plenty of learning and fun for the youngest naturalist as well as for the older brothers and sisters.I love that there is a teaching resource website listed for teachers. I'm going to give one to my grandchildren's kindergarten and 1st grade teachers.
This is a magical. eye-opening book. The text leads us through the seasons of life in the forest pools which dot our woodlands and which give birth and sustenance to creatures large and small. The illustrations, beyond being lovely, provide a window on the sentient nature of the life around us. My favorite page is the arrival in the pool of a big, hungry bull frog who comes there to lunch upon the pollywogs. Their worried eyes tell a story all their own. As I read the book to one of my granddaughters, I was grateful - for my own understanding and hers - for the scientific information provided along the way. Questions like, "What happens to the wood frogs when winter comes, Grandpa? Do they die?", need quick, reassuring answers. They're right there for you. Marvelous!

Well written, engaging book about vernal pools in the northeast US. Sidebars give more detail for additional study. The pool narrates a year in its life, and it is poetic too. Used this with my elementary science classes.

This is a very complete book of the history from 30 AD going forward. Its a read that you set out on like a journey. Some days you read 10 pages and some days 20 but beyond that it takes time to assemble what was taking place shortly after the death of Christ. Its important to know as it leads into the discussions and theories of why in the 3rd century the collection of writings and readings became the bible. Read as many of the non books of the bible before you start this. It will give you a better back ground of the various views that were taking place and then read this so that you can grasp the history of the times.
Very pleased with this purchase. The book is a very interesting read. I loved the extra features provided, like tables that show you the parallel account in the Bible. A well constructed book too. Would definitely recommend if you have any interest in the Bible or Jewish history.
while a solidly bound book, and no doubt an authentic translation, it is translated in old English style, very difficult to understand for the modern English speaker. I would recommend other translations. my version sits unused as I order another of a modern translation.

He was a Jewish General feared and admired by his enemies, the Romans. When he was captured, calls for his execution went unheeded. He gave up the sword soaked in Roman blood to take up the pen of a historian. Some of his countrymen viewed him as a traitor.Within these pages are tales of intrigue in the royal courts, the madness of kings, the senseless slaughter of men, women and children, and interwoven with the great figures of history. Some passages are extremely long and border on tedium to the nth degree. However, even the tedium of details is worth the read.Other passages are just fascinating- Moses, the General of Egypt's army, wins a war against Ethiopians and marries Tharbis, Princess of Ethiopia. Their descendents would rule Ethiopia for centuries.There is a lot of sadness in these pages, especially the final destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. The Jewish nation was decimated in the first century.The last bastion of Jewish resistance was a thousand men, women and children who made their heroic stand against the approaching legions. The fateful decision by the leaders of Masada as the Romans prepared for the final assault will not only touch the heart, but it will reaffirm a basic principle of the human spirit- it is better to die free than become a slave of the oppressor.These stories and many others are found in these 1000 plus pages. This is a serious work for the equally serious reader.
I bought this for my Mother. I read a bit before I took it to her. I found it to be interesting not withstanding that I did not necessarily agree with his "take" on scripture.When Christians read this they need to understand that this will not necessarily be in agreement with traditional Christian views. None the less, it is a great insight to how the Hebrew people thought.I thought it was a very good historical view of Hebrew attitude and how it came about, at least from my Christian perspective. Knowing how people think helps to understand their reactions to others.There were alot of good footnotes that helps Christians understand the Hebrew line of thinking.I would recommend this highly to any one interested in history and understanding a different perspective on scripture.
I'm not quite sure how to place "The New Complete Works of Josephus" (Kregel Academic & Professional, 1999) among other editions of Josephus that are available.This work is a "revised" version of Whiston's 1737 translation, which has been "corrected" to an unknown degree by Paul L. Maier.Besides Josephus' writings, the book includes 7 "dissertations" on the text by Whiston such as "The testimonies of Josephus concerning Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, and James the Just, vindicated". These along with the footnotes reveal a translator anxious to defend the authenticity of his source text(s), the historical accuracy of Josephus, the correspondence of Josephus's accounts with the Old and New Testament, etc.Whiston seems to have a vested interest in Josephus as supporting and supplementing various Biblical accounts. He definitely comments upon the work from a Christian (he was actually an Arian) rather than a purely critical perspective. However, I see no reason at this time to believe this infects his translation with bias.Assuming that "Complete Works" has been completely corrected, it's greatest failing is being very difficult to read. Apparently, Whiston had something against periods, but really loved semicolons. Many a sentence runs on and on to paragraph length. The syntax is tortuous.The same publisher has two other editions of Josephus that are very different from Complete Works, yet seem very similar to each other. These are "Essential Works" (Josephus: The Essential Works) and "Essential Writings" (Josephus: The Essential Writings). Both are current editions using a translation by Paul L. Maier.The following is a sample of Maier's new translation followed by Whiston's. The text corresponds to Loeb Bk. VI, Ch. 14, 374-378From "Josephus: The Essential Writings", Kregel, 1990, ISBN 0825429641 (Maier translation)The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the bodies of the slain, they found those of Saul and his sons, and they cut off their heads and impaled their bodies on the walls of Bethshan. But when the Israelites of Jabesh-Gilead learned about this mutilation, the bravest of them marched all night to Bethshan, removed the bodies of Saul and his sons, and carried them to Jabesh, where they buried them. The enemy was either not able or not bold enough to stop them, because of their great courage.Saul came to this end, as Samuel had predicted, because of his disobedience regarding the Amalekites and his destruction of the high priest and his family. I can't personally vouch for them, but in the introduction to "Complete Works" Maier himself states that those represent the "best English translation".If you don't need each and every line and want text you can actually parse, perhaps you should buy "Essential Works" or "Essential Writings". I can't tell you which, since I don't have them and I'm mystified as to what the difference might be. Of course, there are other translations and editions from other publishers of repute that are certainly comparable in readability.If you need (or want) every line for a very economical price, "Complete Works" will do.Good luck reading it.

I inherited some roses at my house from the previous owner so I was looking to better understand how to take better care of my roses and also learn the differences between hybrid tea, floribunda, grandiflora and polyantha, etc, as I am starting from scratch in learning how to identify my roses. This book includes helpful information on using both inorganic and organic methods of controlling diseases and pests, which I found most helpful as I am also just learning about common rose diseases and pests and insects that are harmful to roses. In the 'Praying Mantis' beneficial insects section, the author writes: "If you put a mantid on your computer screen and start moving the cursor around on the screen,sometimes the mantid will chase it and try to catch it." I thought that was pretty cute. I also learned a new term, 'rose wranglers', apparently these are folks who seek out old roses that still probably grow on old cemeteries or abandoned houses, and the wranglers may sometimes come across old roses/antique roses on private property and talk to the owners to get permission to collect some. So if you already have roses which are pretty established, this book offers great information on how to control rose diseases, how often to fertilize, etc. If you are starting from scratch, then this book will be one of your go-to and must-have books with plenty of good information on how to select, shop and plant roses, and the whole cycle of ongoing care and maintenance.There seems to not be that many comprehensive recent books on the market about roses care and rose gardening, so I was pleased to come across this title. The author also has a humorous tone and will put the novice rose gardener at ease.As an avid and interested rose keeper, I wanted a book filled with no nonsense,informative tips to help make my garden grow. This book is perfect for just that. Ms. Cordell is extremely knowledgeable about the health and history of these much beloved, yet complex breed of plants. I was also most impressed by her Attenborough like savvy regarding the different wild life and bugs that can help or hinder said plants. As city horticulturist with no staff taking care of about 20 gardens, plus a 300+ public rose garden, I was already running like crazy everywhere I went. I wanted roses that wouldn't wilt or croak or wrap themselves in blackspot every time I looked at them cross-eyed. I wanted tough roses, roses that took heat and drought and bug attacks and zombie apocalypses with aplomb and would still come out looking great and covered with scented blossoms. (And the blossoms HAD to be scented -there was no two ways about that.) I started reading rose books. I talked to Charles some more, which is always fun. Somewhere along the way, I got obsessed. I immersed myself in roses. I read about antique roses, which were making a comeback. Rose breeders, most notably David Austin, were crossing modern varieties with old varieties and to get roses that combined the best of the new and the old. Other breeders were creating roses that were tough and disease-resistant, such as the 'Knock-Out' landscape rose, which now you see everywhere.I planted some antique roses,and they looked great. I planted more. The rose garden was starting to look spiffy, even though I still had to take roses out every year due to the rose rosette virus. I even tucked in some annuals and perennials around the garden to doll up the place when the roses conked out in July and August. And so my obsession began.Roses are amazing plants. Many old roses have a long and storied history. Some species that were growing during the time of the Pyramids are still blooming today. And these roses are attractive and fragrant. History, fragrance, and beauty in one flower. What could be better?

New to rose gardening, I was searching for some good books on roses care and rose gardening. I came across this title on Amazon and downloaded the 99 cents Kindle version. The book is self-published and the quality of the writing is excellent. There are many beautiful photos of roses throughout the book (although the photos might be more exciting in the paperback version). There are chapters on choosing the best rose variety, shopping for roses, caring for roses, pruning and training, solving growing problems, beneficial insects, propagation, and monthly checklists. As someone new to roses care and rose gardening, I found this book to be more than adequate. I inherited some roses at my house from the previous owner so I was looking to better understand how to take better care of my roses and also learn the differences between hybrid tea, floribunda, grandiflora and polyantha, etc, as I am starting from scratch in learning how to identify my roses (although I would have to consult some of the rose databases on the Internet to better identify the roses, which would still be quite a task). This book includes helpful information on using both inorganic and organic methods of controlling diseases and pests, which I found most helpful as I am also just learning about common rose diseases and pests and insects that are harmful to roses. In the 'Praying Mantis' beneficial insects section, the author writes: "If you put a mantid on your computer screen and start moving the cursor around on the screen, sometimes the mantid will chase it and try to catch it." I thought that was pretty cute. I also learned a new term, 'rose wranglers', apparently these are folks who seek out old roses that still probably grow on old cemeteries or abandoned houses, and the wranglers may sometimes come across old roses/antique roses on private property and talk to the owners to get permission to collect some. So if you already have roses which are pretty established, this book offers great information on how to control rose diseases, how often to fertilize, etc. If you are starting from scratch, then this book will be one of your go-to and must-have books with plenty of good information on how to select, shop and plant roses, and the whole cycle of ongoing care and maintenance. There seems to not be that many comprehensive recent books on the market about roses care and rose gardening, so I was pleased to come across this title. The author also has a humorous tone and will put the novice rose gardener at ease.

I received this book thru BookBub. I enjoyed reading it and getting a lot of ideas on how to improve my rose growing, the main problem at the present is I'm in an apartment with minimum space inside and absolutely no yard outside just a parking. I'll be moving in about 5-6 months and I'm definitely going to have a yard big enough for roses.
Stop and smell the roses, take time to enjoy them, even if you never thought you could grow a rose. Melissa's Rose book is one I have recommended to visitors at our local Rose Gardens. It is filled with easy to follow tips and ideas. She shares the highs and lows of these garden favorites.[Oh Melinda, I accidentally posted a review to the plagiarist, not you. I read this book as an audio book first and loved it so had to buy it. I wish it had color pictures but the material is great anyway. I am inspired to be a rosarian.
Just what I needed as an amateur gardener. She gives all the info needed for planting, pruning, and other care. The list of recommended roses includes disease-resistant fragrant varieties.
