Oh. My. G*d. What a book. I've studied grammar from books 4 inches thick that assume you know all the vocabulary. Gorden gives you the vocabulary, along with amazing, ironic, bizarre woodcuts with added captions that obliquely illustrate all kinds of things. If you think the English Language is one heck of a fun toy to play with, you'll likely love it.
In case you couldn't figure it out from the title, this is a short prescriptive grammar of English. Its gimmick is that the examples have a silly gothic horror theme ("How wicked to behold you," "The girl squatting under the bridge is a debutante"), and the text is interspersed with old woodcuts, which have absolutely no correlation with the text, or, often, with their own captions.The 1993 edition adds an index, which makes it much more useful than the original 1984 version.The level of the book is extremely basic. There is no discussion of the subjunctive, for example. There is also no room made for nuance: nothing about British versus American usage, house styles, levels of formality, or issues on which good writers can disagree (split infinitives, prepositions with nothing after them).The best thing about the book is that it's entertaining. The examples are strange and charming, and reading them is like eating bonbons. I plowed through the book in an hour, enjoying every minute of it. Unfortunately I didn't learn anything from the book that I didn't already know, and I don't think it's going to be particularly useful to me as a reference.Readers who want a grammar book for self-instruction will probably not want to use this book, since it lacks exercises. Readers whose native language is not English will probably have trouble following it, since the sophisticated style and vocabulary are mismatched to the basic level at which it discusses grammar. It might be a good choice for a bright teenager whose high school doesn't teach English grammar effectively.
Perhaps this book is meant for laughs or just for fun. If that's that case it might deserve a higher rating. For people like myself who are very challenged in spelling, punctuation, and grammar it just isn't helpful.I purchased this book in hopes that it would give me a fun way to learn writing mechanics. I expected illustrations to guide me through the stickier spots in my work. This book does not have that. The pictures are cute (in a vampirey, gothic way) but they do not add much to the explanations.The index is really not usefully at all to someone who is clueless in grammar. Terms such as Past Perfect Progressive Tense and Subjective Complements mean nothing to me. After reading these sections - they still mean nothing to me. It would have been nice to see index entries such as: Who's vs. Whose or Past vs. Passed. These are not listed. I took some time to try and find these sections in the handbook, but couldn't.If you are grammar challenged like I am, skip this book.
A bit macabre in context, however, this essential grammar book effectively reduces tomes of boring grammars into a mesmerizing, instantly grasped fable read.I have extensively studied advanced grammar (English and five other languages), yet this trickster book taught me several things I didn't at all know! Wow. Amazing asset to any English speaker with an exigence to communicate effectively.It's time to terrify those around you with hauntingly accurate use of grammar--and meaning.
Gordon's book was first recommended to me by poet Bill Matthews when I was a grad student in the MFA program at Brooklyn College. DECADES later, I use Vampire teaching college composition courses, from remedial to advanced.The students can "see" the grammar principles at work. The reticent and timid grammar student is energized by Gordon's exotic, quixotic and witty illustrations. Parts of Speech, Sentence Structure, Passive Voice -- all the essentials are here. Gordon's explanations are straight froward and practical. The class discussions sparked by the content have sometimes been more engaging than literature discussions.
See above.That being said, it is definitely designed for someone who wants to be there really learning the grammar. It's not one of those technical manuals that will answer the quick question you have about that pesky comma. It's going to teach you why the comma is there and how to identify the parts of your sentence with the fluency to rearrange them for greater effect, thus avoiding having to include that comma at all. It wasn't all sunshine and roses, though, from the point of view of a grammatical craftsman who likes to compare constructions in French, German, Latin, and ancient Greek. Gordon swept the differentiation of tense from aspect under the rug, and the book was completely lacking a discussion of mood. Since that's kind of an enormous gaping hole in an otherwise charming, illustrative, and exhaustive book, I have to go 4 stars instead of 5.
It must have been quite a challenge writing a book that would be predominately read by all of us stick-in-the-mud grammar teachers. I think Gordon does a great job of catching the reader's attention while teaching some very (I'm sorry but it's true) dry material. I teach it, and even I hate reading about it!By no stretch of the imagination is this the best book on grammar out. Nor is this the best book written on the subject. I would equate it to a grammar coffee break. It's useful, but also pleasant. If you want a hyper-organized, get the answer quick reference book this is a poor choice. If, however, you want a fresh source of ideas to present to your hyperactive, low attention span, immediate gratification students you may find this quite a bit more useful that diagramming you millionth sentence.
The examples are hilarious and the author incredibly informative on the subject matter. I will continue to reference this whenever I need to school myself on the geeky levels of writing in the English language.

I did read all 4 of these. The first 3 were good, better and down right great ðŸ‘....this one not so much!. Felt like it had been edited by 3rd graders. The author constantly mixed up sybielle and shayla, to very very different characters. It just felt off, like it had been "slapped tiger in a rush", and did the first book an injustice by not having been completely edited?? Or just completed?? Don't get wrong, I liked Lyric Curse(1), and loved both of the Sisera books and couldn't wait to read this one, but it was a total letdown.
Good story line throughout. Enough to keep my interest. Unfortunately, punctuation errors are also throughout. I was hoping there would be some improvement in this third installment but alas, there wasn't. It is difficult to enjoy a story while wanting to correct the punctuation and sentence/paragraph structures. Not sure I can suffer through another - unless the author has acquired some good proof readers.
I have enjoyed the continuation in the series...watching Lyric grow into some of his powers by finding and bonding with his dragon, Kemoth.. His life is full of adventure as he tries to stay ahead of the dragon slayers. This is a very good story. I recommend it to anyone who loves dragons.
I enjoyed both books in this series, my only bad point there wasn't more,lol. good story line. lovers of Fantasy will enjoy these books.

Although I have never been a big fan of Winston Churchill (I remember watching his funeral when I was a young boy), I have always been fascinated by the famous photograph of Churchill in a POW line-up in Pretoria in 1899. When I worked in Pretoria in the 1980s, my route into town always stopped at the intersection of Skinner and van der Walt streets and the Staatsmodel School where Churchill was held stared back at me like a historical ghost amid the modern buildings and traffic of apartheid South Africa. So, when I saw this book, I grabbed it, gobbled it up in two days and have to give it five stars, which I rarely give, even to very good books. Millard writes wonderfully; she knows her history and, frankly, I can't offer one negative criticism of this book. The criticism that this is a "left-wing" attack on Churchill is ludicrous; the author is even-handed in her perspective, and intrinsically correct in her later historical analysis. I recommend this book enthusiastically: it is a great yarn, well-told.By the way, I also enjoyed her book on Garfield: the Destiny of the Republic. It was well-written, informative, and, most importantly a fascinating tale. I recommend that one as well.
I heard Candice Millard being interviewed on NPR and was so interested that I bought her book. I wasn't disappointed. Hero of the Empire is an easy read—that is, it held my attention throughout. But the surprise for me was learning about this conflict with the Boers. I knew virtually nothing about them or their history. Nor did I know anything about this period in Churchill's life. The author has done a remarkable job of presenting Churchill in the making, warts and all, and for this reason I bought the book. Churchill's always fun to read about and in this book especially....such utter confidence, even when so young. But in the end, it was the author's magnificent ability to capture the zeitgeist of the period, and to put the reader in this fascinating time and place, that resonates. For me, Churchill was icing on the cake.
Winston Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) is the greatest wartime leader of Great Britain in the long and glorious history of the British Empire. Our story is set in South Africa late in the reign of Queen Victoria. The hero of the tale is WSC who is serving as a wartime correspondent for a London newspaper. Churchill had graduated as a military man at Sandhurst and cut his battlefield teeth in such places as India, Egypt and Cuba. He sought glory and fame but those two phantoms evaded him until he arrived in South Africa. The enemy were the Boers, staunch Calvinists from stern Dutch heritage. They were also enemies of native tribes such as the Zulus. Under their leader Paul Krueger they declared war on England in the summer of 1899. Several fierce battles ensued in which the British suffered both losses and victories. This was the second Boer War since the 1880s conflict which saw the Boers come out as victors. Churchill was captured on an armored train and taken to an old school in Praetoria where he was imprisoned by the Boers from August until December 13, 1899. He made a daring escape over prison walls, was aided by a British man who hid him a dark and rat infested mine and saw that he eventually arrived across the border safe and sound though covered with coal dust.The daring escape made Churchill famous and led to his first election to parliament as an MP for the district of Oldham. The young callow man would end his life as the roaring lion of the moribund British Empire. Candace Millard has written another excellent biography following the story of Theodore Roosevelt in River of Doubt and the assassination of POTUS James Garfield in The Destiny of the Republic. Popular history writing at its best. This little known episode in the life of WSC will keep you enthralled and reading as if it were an adventure tale. Excellent!
My husband and I loved her other two books, The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey and Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President, so it was with anticipation that I opened this one. True to form, the author grabbed me from the first paragraph in the prologue, making me forget about the world around me or the affairs of the day. I was there, in South Africa, and a war I had never studied, with all of the implications of the British Empire's magnitude, became alive. I will not repeat what other, more verbose reviewers, already and eloquently wrote about the contents of the book. I enjoy short reviews when I shop on Amazon. I highly recommend this book, as I do her other books, biographies told in a way that feel more like a thrilling adventure.

Born in Victorian England in 1874, Churchill was a graduate of Sandhurst and becoming an officer who sought medals serving in India and Africa. After serving as a lieutenant in the cavalry Churchill ran for parliament in the Dundee constituency and lost. After this Churchill was still seeking adventure and got a job as a newspaper correspondent coving the Boer War. In Candice Millard’s excellent book Hero Of The Empire, the author goes into superb detail of the capture and imprisonment of Churchill and his subsequent heroic escape. Imprisoned in Petoria the author details the mindset and actions of Churchill and his planning for escape and what he did subsequently. What transpired was the luck of Winston Churchill included being hidden and aided by a British man by the name of John Howard who played a large part in Churchill’s escape to Portuguese East Africa. Also written in the book was an explanation of the initial battles of the Boer War in which the British were losing one battle after another. This is a well written and well researched book which should be read by all serious historians as well as any devoted Churchillian.

About the Author
Isabel Allende nació en Perú donde su padre era diplomático chileno. Vivió en Chile entre 1945 y 1975, con largas temporadas de residencia en otros lugares, en Venezuela hasta 1988 y, a partir de entonces, en California. Inició su carrera literaria en el periodismo en Chile y en Venezuela. Su primera novela, La casa de los espíritus, se convirtió en uno de los títulos míticos de la literatura latinoamericana. A ella le siguieron otros muchos, todos los cuales han sido éxitos internacionales. Su obra ha sido traducida a treinta y cinco idiomas. En 2010, fue galardonada con el Premio Nacional de Literatura de Chile, y en 2012, con el Premio Hans Christian Andersen de Literatura por su trilogía El Águila y el Jaguar.

La casa de los espiritus es una de las novelas mas populares de la literatura latinoamericana del siglo XX. Esta novela fue llevada a la gran pantalla con mucho exito y con la aparicion, entre otros, del gran Antonio Banderas. La produccion filmografica hizo a Isabel Allende, que no era muy conocida entonces, una escritura muy popular. Mucha gente compro y leyo este libro, y luego fueron (y todavia lo son!) leales lectores de la escritora chilena.Esta es una novela total, en la que se narra la historia de una familia a traves de sitios magicos como la 'casa' que da nombre al libro. En el libro se repasan varias generaciones de chilenos, y asi la historia de un pais que fue de una estructura economica basicamente agraria, con terratenientes aprovechandose de la 'ignorancia' del campesinado, a un socialismo economico que llevo a la revolucion de los 60 y al golpe de estado fascista del 1972.Es una lectura muy entretenida, y un libro muy bien escrito, al que le doy 5 estrellas por su calidad y por el carino que le tengo al libro. Lo he leido varias veces, y creo que es muy bueno, pero tambien les digo que la ultima vez que lo lei este verano pasado me di cuenta que la ultima parte del libro parece que haya sido escrito con un poco de prisa. El libro se hubiera beneficiado de haber tenido unas 100-150 paginas mas, pero aun y asi, es un libro que recomiendo sin lugar a dudas.
La Casa de los EspÃritus se trata de la experiencia chilena que dio lugar a la dictadura de Pinochet narrada a través de la familia de Esteban Trueba. El patriarca hace florecer su hacienda Las Tres MarÃas con esfuerzo propio, trabajando de sol a sol y luego se convierte en el senador más conocido del partido conservador. Pero su éxito se pagó con las vidas de sus queridos, su esposa, sus hijos y su nieta. Estos tuvieron que sufrir por la conducta y rabietas de Trueba que también tuvo que pagar por sus propios excesos. Su familia naturalmente se alineó con las añoranzas del pueblo, trabajó con la gente necesitada y se enamoraron con lÃderes socialistas. Asi la historia de los Trueba es un microcosmos del pueblo Chileno que lucha consigo mismo para superarse pero termina hiriéndose sin poder refenar las corrientes de la vida.Toda la familia sufre durante el transcurso de la novela por la terquedad de Esteba Trueba. Pero al final su humanidad le permite perdonar y ayudar a sus enemigos por el amor que siente por su esposa, hija y nieta. En fin, Trueba no " murió como perro, como el temÃa, sino apaciblemente en mis brazos...." concluye su nieta Alba en el epÃlogo.

Empezaré este review comentando sobre el formato kindle. Está muy bueno, tiene sus errores estilo cuando escaneamos un documento, pero en comparación con Crimen y Castigo, no tiene tantos errores. Creo que Amazon deberÃa tener mejor control de calidad en estos productos ya que el segmento hispano está creciendo más y más cada dÃa.Con respecto a la obra debo decir que al principio le encontré parecido a Cien Años de Soledad, pero eso fue porque ya me habÃan advertido de eso, tiene ciertas similitudes, sin embargo la autora es tan natural y suelta en su escritura que mantienen al lector entretenido. Tiene sus momentos de humor y la verdad es muy bonito. Creo que al final ella pierde la persepectiva de estar escribiendo un libro de realismo mágico, no se siente eso al final, hay dos historias repetidas, una en el marco de lo fantástico y la otra en la realidad histórica de Chile.Por cultura general lo recomiendo, el libro es bueno y la historia es muy bonita.
The narration is easy and fluid. Sometimes the gruesome staff is described simply and fast without many details. Not everyone likes this type of reading, maybe because it describes an era where women didn’t have many rights, but I find very interesting and want to continue reading. I know this is the first book she wrote and it is also my first book of her.

After her mom Juliette dies and Eva is clearing out her house, she finds a trunk full of slips of paper containing dreams her mom had but didn't get to achieve. Using money left to her from the will, Eva makes it her mission to reach all the dreams her mom had, traveling the world and checking them off one by one on postcards she addresses to her mom. She finds a travel agency that includes agents who will escort travelers to their various destinations, and an unfortunate incident leaves Eva stuck with Thor- a Dane whose good looks match up to his godly name, but he is rude and arrogant, at least to Eva's first impression!Eva is rather reserved and prefers to stay at home in her pj's, so this round-the-world trip is a huge change for her. In order to attain some of her mom's dreams, such as singing on top of the Eiffel Tower and skydiving, Eva has to be brave and live life like her mom did, without fear. I loved visiting all of the different locations Eva and Thor traveled to on this journey. Each location and dream Juliette had is described in such a way you honestly feel you are right there with them. I especially loved their visit in Amsterdam with the tulips, flower parade, and the fact they got to sleep in a windmill-I didn't even know you could do that! It was so fun and memorable following Eva around as she made her mom's dreams come true, and along the way Eva realizes some dreams of her own.While reading this I was rooting not only for Eva as she lived out her mom's dreams, but for her and Thor as well. The chemistry was obvious between the two of them, but they are both so stubborn and afraid of getting hurt. This book had me laughing and crying all the way to the end. The travelling aspect was really neat, but I also loved the romance of course as well. It was both sweet and a little steamy! I really enjoyed the epilogue but hope to see more of these characters in upcoming books!I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Where to even begin. Love love LOVED this book. Holly Martin wrote thé must read novel for this summer. It's an absolute gem.We meet our main character, Eva, when she's about to start crossing off some outrageous things on someone else's bucket list. Original to say the least, as a reader you're already set for journey full of unexpected twists and turns. Eva is a very easy to love character who feels like a friend, or at least very familiar from the start.And then there's Thor. Pfew. Now I'm definitely at a loss for words. How to describe the Thor-phenomenon?! I was completely smitten. After reading this book, I feel as if I've already had my summer romance this year (don't tell my husband) and boy was it a steamy one. I felt every spark there was between him and Eva and I fell head over heals for their romance. Or was it Thor himself I fell for? Wouldn't be hard, seeing as he looked as either/both/one of the Hemsworth brothers in my imagination.In all seriousness, Holly Martin's writing as always transports you right to the heart of the story. You feel the characters' emotions, you believe their dreams and you wish for their hopes and dreams. Someone almost had to physically remove the book from my hands for me to stop reading. I just couldn't get enough.The fact that Eva is going on these crazy travels, pushing herself doing these (sometimes) ridiculous activities in memory of her mum adds another layer to this story. It's incredibly moving and beautiful. This story will definitely stay with you long after reading that final chapter. I'm always excited about a new Holly Martin book, but now I definitely cannot wait to read more!Emotional, passionate, funny, and very, very addictive - 'The Summer of Chasing Dreams' is an absolute must read this season.
I love Holly Martin's books, and this one is no exception. I began reading it, and I was so enthralled that I couldn't put it down, so I stayed up all night and read it. It is worth the bags under my eyes! This book gives you a warm feeling inside, and you fall in love with the characters instantly. I highly recommend this and all of Holly's books (I read them all!) I am so thankful to Holly for sharing her gift as a writer with me and other readers. Can't wait to see what's next!
Well I've said it before and I'll say it again, Holly Martin knows how to write some slow burn romances ending in some decent sex scenes! I love that about her writing and in this novel we have some added travel plans to enjoy along the way as well. Who wouldn't want to spend a book travelling the world with a main character and her travel expert companion? Great plot!Eva Blue was an interesting character because she does go on a big journey over the course of this book, both metaphorically as well as literally. At the beginning of the book she leads a fairly sheltered life, as if to counteract her Mum's wild ways. She doesn't seem very worldly wise and often seems shocked by things around her. Her comments about different things in the world and the people she meets can sometimes come off as fairly judgemental and can verge on the sexist or homophobic but have no fear, she does develop and grow by the end of the book.The travel in the book is so much fun and we either get to hear about it in the form of a narrative of Eva travelling or through Eva's postcards to her recently deceased mother. I liked hearing about Eva's experiences through her own eyes and seeing what particular things she is willing to take risks on and which she isn't. Thor is also an interesting character, one can't help but picture Chris Hemsworth when reading about him. He has a great relationship with his family but I didn't always agree with the ways in which he was willing to manipulate situations in order to spend more time with Eva. I'm sure he's not some kind of predator but I couldn't be positive.On this whole this was a lovely read. The lack of diversity is made up for in the romance and the sex scenes. The sex scenes are always safe as well, utilising condoms and other methods of contraception was always mentioned. I loved the travel and would like to find out everything that happened when Eva and Thor travelled across the pond!

About the Author
Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis is the founder of the nonprofit Classes 4 Classes Inc. which teaches compassion, caring, and empathy through active engagement to children across the United States. Previously, she was a first-grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School. DeBellis has been honored as a Glamour magazine Woman of the Year and a L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth, and she received the Dedicated Teacher Award from the Chicago International Conference on Education. She has been featured in People, Marie Claire, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan; has been a guest on The Katie Couric Show; and is a motivational speaker for school boards, administrators, teachers, and students.

I feel terrible for what Kaitlin went through, but this isn't a good book. Her post-Sandy Hook experience with PTSD is godawful, but unfortunately Kaitlin, or whomever wrote this for her, just isn't a writer. You can safely skip it.
I was disappointed. The level-headed actions that Ms. Roig took on that tragic December morning are to be greatly admired. Despite being the first classroom available to the gunman, she and her children were able to hide themselves away in time. How much of it was luck (maybe her proximity to the front made it easier to interpret the gravity of the situation) is hard to say, but as a classroom teacher I hope I could react as swiftly as she. The account of her thinking process during the incident was well written and gripping to read. It was clear, too, that she genuinely cared about her students and loved teaching. What she and her students experienced was horrendous; a life changing event. I can understand how she would be hypersensitive upon returning to school and the need to feel safe. I appreciate that she recognized the emotional impact the event had on her students and championed their needs to the administration. Whether she took it too far, who knows? The administration obviously thought so. While I admire her Classes 4 Classes.org and all she has done to promote compassion and empathy, I felt that too much of the book was devoted to that. My expectations did not jive with what the book had to offer. I was hoping to hear more about the people involved both before and after that December day. For example, even though she and Victoria Soto shared a common doorway, she barely spoke of herexcept about her reaction to the funeral and that Ms. Soto was a good teacher. What about the other victims such as the principal, the specialist, the aide, and the temporary teacher? How about the custodian? He played a very large part in the ordeal. I never expected to hear much about the children who died. That would have been too much. However, It would have been nice to hear about some of the other teachers who lived through this and how they coped. No names were needed. I was hoping for a larger and more complete scope of the book. By the end of the book I had had enough of Classes 4 Classes. I wish Kaitlyn Roig-DeBellis the best and hope that her future work continues to help others. I believe that she truly wants to help. While a part of the book hit the mark, it left me unsatisfied.
Enjoyed reading. A teacher who did everything possible to protect her students from a madman. No matter what, these students and teacher will always be connected.
This book shows how we can all make something positive from something that is tragic. It's easy to focus on the negative. It takes strength to get past it and move forward.
This book was encouraging in that this teacher saved her students by her quick thinking to hide them in the small bathroom attached to her classroom. However, I was appalled at the attitude of the school administrator when the teacher let her know the safety needs of her traumatized students. There is nothing written in this book that shows that anyone stood up for the teacher and her students. This situation ruined this book for me.

Ok compilation of the UCC and Res2 of contracts; you could perhaps find them online or through weslaw/Lexis electronically though.
Allowed to use during final exam!
I don't know how to review this! What a pain this was to read for contracts, which is challenging enough as it is! The language is terrible and beyond confusing. Even my contracts professor who identifies as a contract scholar who has clerked for Posner says these are written poorly for their purpose.Like I said, I don't know how this is to be reviewed. It's not as if I had a choice in buying this text for enjoyment. I had to buy it and I had to read it, whether I liked it or not. If you're looking for something to supplement your understanding of contracts I wouldn't recommend this unless you have legal experience. Or love to read extremely complicated texts. For for the poor souls in law school, this is a must for contracts class.

It has the restatement (second), UCC, lots of stuff. Don't buy a newer edition. They're all the same.
This is not the newest edition, but if you able to get an older edition, this one works great! My professor actually uses the 2012 edition, and I have had no problems with my edition corresponding with his! It arrived in a timely manner and was in great condition for a used text book!
Good for a comprehensive study of Restatement & UCC Article 2. However, it is not as helpful for the study of other UCC sections such as secured transactions and payment systems as these sections are significantly redacted in this book. I attempted to use it for my negotiable instruments/payment systems and secured transactions classes and found that is was missing many essential code sections in Article 9 and Articles 3.
Your prof will say if you need it and it will live up to the expectations of the class. There are q&a's throughout that my prof used so that was useful.
