I love Dani Shapiro's writing, and when this book came out it rose to the top of my pile of "to reads" and I wasn't disappointed. Everything looks different from the inside, and a marriage is one thing we rarely see through that lens. At times poignant and sweet, others cast with an essential sadness. I would give it 5 stars...since I didn't put it down....I read it through to the end, but around page 127 it became a bit self indulgent and she lost me. Honestly, I'm not even sure that particular drama was necessary, but maybe it was just over my head.One thing that I loved was reflecting my own marriage in this one, and at times noticed a little smile come to me as I recalled seeing my husband for the first time too. We hardly ever get a chance to do those little things....

I'm reading it again. I'm ordering it for my friends. I'm playing this audiobook as I run errands. It's making me wish I had more errands to run.What I especially loved about this memoir:--the book builds on itself, rewarding our own memories as we read--the connections that Shapiro makes across the moments of her marriage answer one of the key questions of the book: how does a relationship and marriage sustain itself beyond those first eighteen months of infatuation/love--Shapiro's honesty drew me in--it's not "too cool" to tell a love story

The author weaves back and forth in time effortlessly, interspersing quotes from other authors all while being present in her story. This book is a gem.

It's hard to say how much I loved this book. I began to feel shaky and lost as I realized there were less than 20 pages left. Still, the deep understanding of the author's words, the honesty of her life unfolding into joys and worries, her quiet observations and questioning way about her life. As someone who was nicknamed "the thinking woman" by my husband, long before we married- as a response to my constant cerebral focus on our relationship... "what did you mean?" or "remember when you said that?" I appreciate the way Dani Shapiro clings to life's slings and arrows, processing, processing. Her writing is so beautiful- smooth as sand, honest as the boldest, unfiltered confession. This "disinterested" reader fell madly into her pool of life. ( You'll understand once you read this lovely book.) I'm not even sure it should be called a memoir: it's a story, and a journal and a love letter to life, family, the process of getting through it all. And yes, I listen to The Bridge on Sirius, and yes, I watched the Youtube video of Carly and James singing "Devoted to You." And yes, I will return to this book- for its truth, its magic, its beauty.

I had an older one from waaaay back. Found that one useful then, this is useful now. Beware, however, about attractions and rides that are being refurbished, redesigned or closed for some other reason. After you make your selections from the book, get on the WDW website and see if your faves are open for when you'll be there.

If you are going to Disney World, get this book and read it. I did that the first time I went to Disney World (in 1993) and it was immensely helplful in navigating the parks effectively. Through the years I have purchased the current book periodically. This book is revised every year as Disney changes attractions and it is very helpful to have the current book when planning an upcoming trip. We just got annual passes for Disney World this year so I decided it was time to update. I'm glad we got the current book as a lot has changed in the last few years.

I am so very happy I purchased this book. We will be traveling to WDW in September 2016 and although I have been to Disney before, many, many things have changed so I needed something that would provided updated, clear information on FastPass+, Advanced Dining Reservations, Hotel Selection and general overall guidance regarding the Disney Parks. I saw this book in store before purchasing on Amazon and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The colors inside of the book are great and I love that they have included pictures with many of their reviews. I also love the coupons that they included in the back of the book. They are going to be a great help when we are there. The tips and tricks that are included are awesome and I plan on using a lot of them when we travel to WDW. If you're taking a Disney Cruise, there is a small section in the back of the book for that as well. I'm not sure how good it is as I haven't looked at it, but just for an FYI. In the way back of the book as well, they have laid out a few pages for you to create an itinerary for your trip. It's perfect and gives you spaces for flight and hotel information, FastPass+ reservations and Advanced Dining Reservations. Although I had already booked our hotel and park tickets before purchasing the book, I really liked being able to read the reviews of each of the hotels and the differences in each of the Park Tickets. If you're looking for an excellent, overall travel book for Disney, this is the one to get!

This is actually a very nice book. If you are planning a trip to Disney World, this is a great book for your kids. It really helps them know all the attractions and get even more excited about going!Do note that it is basically the exact same book that we have from 2011. If I had realized it wouldn't change with the exception of adding 1 ride, I would have just stuck with our older version.

Great overview for kids. My 6 year old boys liked it! We used the autograph section in back too.The one thing I didn't like is that MANY reviews of different attactions were listed as "scary". Once the idea of "scary" is put in a child's mind it's hard to get past that to form their own opinion. The book should just stick to the facts in their descriptions like wet ride, dark, fast, surprises, etc.As previous posters mentioned, some of the attractions listed in the book were closed, but we just explained that to the kids in advance and they were fine with it.

I ordered this for my ten year old. She really likes it. There are places she can write in things and do a countdown until our trip. I like the fact that the pages are colorful and divided into sections. There are chapters on each of the Disney parks and have real kids telling about their experiences. It is easy for my daughter to read and understand. It describes each of the parks rides and attractions as well as the water parks, Disney Springs and talks about the resorts, best places to dine for a specific item, mini golf and other things to do at Disney. At the end there is even a section for autographs and a scrapbook section. The 160 pages are packed with all types of Disney tidbits, facts, and activities. I highly recommend this and think its geared for children 8 and up but it's also a good guide for parents taking children about things to do. I confess, I've actually skimmed through it getting ideas too.

My teens love this book as do I. We have been Birnbaum fans since they first started publishing. Pictures are top quality and they go into great detail on staying at WDW, rides and full of little tips on how to end your trip from WDW as happy as it started. I would highly recommend this to anyone who hasn't been in a couple of years, they have "magic bands" and new "fast pass" system that to many would confuse (not to mention feeling short changed if the day they arrive can't get on their favorite rides because they failed to FP+ in advance)

Awesome travel companion for kids (and families) who are preparing for a trip to WDW! Anyone who has ever gone to WDW understands that you truly have to plan this trip - and by plan, I mean truly plan like you have never planned a vacation before in your entire life and probably never will again. Unfortunately, the adults end up doing all of the planning and this results in dragging the kids around for the entire vacation - hoping to create the "perfect vacation." This is a great way to get your kids involved in the planning so you know what they are actually interested in doing.

outstanding book that provided a step by step plan to financial freedom!Michael did a nice job laying out the entire book that allows the reader to understand the entire process including how to find the property, the one percent rule, avoiding alligators and key notes on financing assets.This is an excellent book! I am a real estate professional that has sold hundreds of millions of dollars over the last 20 years. This book is a very simple and approachable method to starting your path to financial freedom through owning rentals. It never speaks above the reader nor trys to impress them with their success. It’s open and honest and arefreshing change from all the crooks to try to take advantage of people wanting to invest in real estate. They try to get them to use their programs, etc. and their books are usually just a ploy to get them to join their scams. This book is a must if you want to purchase one or 50 rental homes. It should be on every aspiring investor’s shelf.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and all the years of insight into real estate investment wrapped up nicely in an easy-to-read, no BS, just the facts, guide. Mr, Zuber is honest and straight-forward with the "how-to" parts and there is not a lot of fluff to cut through, which I appreciated. Plus, the way he tells his personal story (as well as many other related stories) I found to be very inspiring and encouraging, giving me hope that perhaps I, too, might be able to do this after all. IF you are interested in starting your own real estate investment journey, you should buy this book now. IMHO, it's a good value for the price.

I watched Michael Zuber's YouTube channel for several months and bought his book the week it came out. I hope people read his book and watch his channel. He isn't a "rah rah" kind of guy. He comes across as very real and matter of fact. He doesn't seem to want anything other that to share what he and his wife have been able to create with others. He's not trying to sell you on himself, but more, on yourself...on your ability to do what they did, if you really want to. He tells all and let's you decide. This really resonated with me and where I am in life.

Incredible layout of how Michael himself achieved his goals and now he is sharing those steps with everyone. Being able to study the things he did wrong and right, allow me to avoid the mistakes he made and choose the right path when making decsions. If you want to gain financial freedom in real estate, start with this book!

So many people are judging this book based on their personal feelings about a certain subject, mostly Christianity or America. But I'm giving my review based on the story and writing. Both were excellent. It was a great story and it made you question everything you've ever thought or believed. Did BK have an agenda, of course. It was obvious. But it didn't sway my opinion of the writing or the story. There are two reasons I'm not giving this a 5 star. 1 - she contradicts her agenda more than once. At times Africa is nothing but innocent, then she goes on to tell stories of how they kill and maim, and are just as human as everyone else on the planet. 2 - I feel, and quite frankly this is a first for me, that she took the story too far. Reading on a kindle, I don't know how many pages a book is. And I love that. Some books will seem daunting based solely on their size, It can discourage a lot of people from reading it. (Example, Cutting for Stone - for me 5 stars and still my favorite book to date) But I digress. I still felt she could have wrapped up this story after they left the village but before we got fully engulfed into their adult lives - that portion just didn't capture me as a reader. All said, it was an excellent read and I will recommend it as one of my favorites.

I teach this novel in a course for college juniors and seniors. I’ve just finished reading it for the fifth time. It remains one of my favorite contemporary novels, a brilliant, evocative, beautifully written tour-de-force. It is novel about experience, growth, the resiliency of women, the harshness of a world with little justice, and the inevitability of change. Set in the Congo of the the 1960s-1980s, it recounts the terrible history of imperialism, universal quest for freedom, and strength of tradition and spiritual bonds. The ultimate religion, Kingsolver believes, is the embrace of nature, and acceptance that we, too, are part of a living, biological world, past and present, whose muntu (being) we share.My students love this novel. I look forward each time spring semester to rereading a wonderful book and introducing 20 or so undergraduates to Kingsolver’s work. Five stars (one for each of the five Price women).

I am very skeptical of books written about Africa by non Africans. I believe that our own people should be the voice of the continent. This is not the case with this book. It is an humorous, tragic, heart-rending, intricately woven tale. Kingsolver is phenomenally talented and her gift shines through the Poisonwood Bible. Several years after a good friend first lent it to me, it is still my most revered and recommended novel. This volume was a gift to my mother in law and I even liked the revised cover.

This is a beautifully written book with inspired prose and deep insights. It looks at Africa and Africans with open eyes and a sensitivity to their heritage and culture. It also examines the role of missionaries in Africa, some of whom are good and some terrible. It is not a book for the deeply religious who cannot stand to see their own beliefs challenged or to acknowledge that there are other belief systems out there that are held just as dearly by their followers.I would like to site some of my favorite passages.I could never work out whether we were to view religion as a life-insurance policy or a life sentence.Mama says their skin bears scars different from ours because their skin is a map of all the sorrows in their lives.I pictured hands like those digging diamonds out of the Congo dirt and go to thinking, Gee, does Marilyn Monroe even know where they come from? Just picturing her in thr stain gown and a COngolese diamond digger int he same universe gave me the weebie jeebies. So I didn't think about it anymore.God doesn't need to punish us. He just grants us a long enough life to punish ourselves.Illusions mistaken for truth are the pavement under our feet.There are a lot of other passages and verbal images that I loved but I can't copy the whole book here. However, there is one last thing I want to say and this is a complaint.Here is the quote:A parasite of humans that extinguished us altogether, you see, would quickly be laid to rest in human graves, So the race between predator and prey remains exquisitely neck and neck.As always, it is impossible for people to understand evolution. This passage was supposed to have been said by a researcher at the CDC. It fails to understand that evolution is not forward looking. It is highly likely that this scenario has played out over the millennium for species that no longer exist. In fact, the Tasmanian devil is currently facing extinction from a viral form of cancer that fits this description. This kind of thing is more likely in small populations where genetic diversity is limited. Probably the human race has little to fear on this account.

This book started slow for me, but it soon began to capture my attention. The characters are well developed and very complex. The story is engrossing...the struggles of a white mission family in the Belgian Congo in the 1950's. It is told alternately by the wife and daughters of an pious but abusive husband and father. It follows the characters over several years and describes the impact that time in the Congo had on their lives as some return to the US and others remain in Africa through the rebellion and beyond.

This came to me as one of the "got to read this book some time in your life" and I agree. Poignant, incredibly perceptive with its occasional glimpses into African, world and religious politics of the day (gave me a different view of colonial Africa I can tell you!), beautiful writing and very real characters that just carried me along. Emotionally engrossing - I wanted to slap him and carry them all away....

In my "Non-Diet" recipe book, I have four recipes from this book that I regularly use, not for diet maintenance, but because they taste so good and are easy to make. Good cook book ... the best in the SB Diet cookbook collection.

I got this used like new and it came in MINT condition for just over $9 and free prime shipping. This is for the hard cover book, it is larger than most books which I like as it is easily accessed from the kitchen counter reader. In this section he updates some of the information from the original book (milk and yogurt are now allowed in phase 1 for example) and he gets into more detailed regarding different types of food.Then comes the core of the book. The recipe categories include breakfasts, appetiziers and snacks, soups, salads, side dishes and accompaniments, fish shellfish and poultry, meats, vegetarian entrees and desserts. Each recipe indicates what phase it is appropriate for and many of the recipes are pictured in mouthwatering photographs!Sample recipes include Vegetable Salad with Feta, Homestyle Green Bean Casserole, Pan Seared Pecan Grouper, Whole Wheat Vegetable Lasagna, and Apple and Almond Souffle. Over 200 recipes.One very nice feature is the inclusion of recipes so you can make many of your own condiments. Unfortunately ketchup, barbeque sauce and many other "toppers" are laden with high fructose corn syrup. So Dr. Agatston includes the details on how you can make your own.Overall the quality of recipes is very good. The one negative I have is the total avoidance of sugar and reliance on sugar substitutes. I would rather use real sugar in moderation than sugar substitutes like aspartame. He has a recipe for strawberries with velvety chocolate dip and suggests you use sugar free chocolate syrup. Instead why not use a high quality cocoa bar and melt it down. This is healthier than the faux sugars like malitol,which are in sugar free products and so much more satisfying.Dr. Agatston has some wonderful recipes in this book from top chefs and restaurants and they are worth buying the book for. But many of the desserts with the fake sugars and fat free sour cream fall flat. Moderation is key. Use the real deal in a tiny quantity like the French do.

I'm a long time (as these things go) south beach dieter: I started in January 2003, lost 30 pounds by July 2003, and have kept it off. I bought this cookbook because of the initial buzz that there would be some really interesting new recipes. Unfortunately, the first two I tried were bombs. The oven roasted chick peas had very little flavor and a really odd texture (maybe I didn't roast long enough? Perhaps, but they still could have used some kick to the flavor.) Based on reviews here, I next tried the salmon in creamy lemon sauce, billed as having a remarkably rich and creamy taste. It was average at best; the sauce was thin and the flavor one-dimensional. At this point, I actually printed out an Amazon lable to send the book back. However, I had tagged one last recipe to try--the oatmeal pancakes. These were dynamite! I had tried some VERY expensive lo-carb pancake mixes that yielded odd little things that tasted like bad synthetic omelets, and had sort of resigned myself to no pancakes. But the oatmeal pancakes recipe here? Beautiful cakes, fabulous flavor, good texture. I made a whole recipe, ate 3, and put the rest in a bag in the frig. Then every morning, I popped some in the toaster oven, where they heated up beautifully. Re-inspired, I went back to the cookbook and made escarole with white beans. Another hit! Tonight I will try the salmon with 5-spice seasoning and lime juice, and see how that is. I think now that I will keep the book, and see what other jewels I can come up with.

Wow this is a diet I can follow and enjoy without being hungry and sacrificing taste. I love to cook an I bought this book along with several other South Beach cookbooks and diet books. The recipes are easy and straight forward and are categorized as Phase 1, Phase 2 or Phase 3.

Great book. It arrived in great/new condition. It has over 200 recipes W/ beautiful color photos. The recipes are simple enough, & I think it'll help keep me from getting bored w/ the diet. Phase 1 is the trickiest.

I have a number of diet cookbooks, but this is one of my absolute favorites that has stood the test of time. The recipes are so delicious that I've served them to guests and had them express surprise that they are healthy. I especially appreciate the chapter on vegetarian entrees as I'm a "flexitarian" who tries to eat meatless several times per week. I've also had success adapting many of the entrees calling for red meat (which I don't eat at home) to use poultry instead.Highly recommended!
