Although I'm an experienced hiker, I usually pick up the latest how-to books in hopes of learning something new. Unfortunately, most are horribly out-of-date or seem like they were written by someone who's never actually done any serious backpacking. Thankfully, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Backpacking and Hiking is not one of those books. Simply put, this author knows his stuff and is obviously an experienced backpacker who practices what he preaches.The author packs a lot of relevant info into the book, covering everything from how to pick the right hiking boot to advanced survival skills and the latest gps navigation gadgets. While many books give a cursory look at hiking clothes (usually incorrectly suggesting cotton shirts, jeans, etc), Stevenson delves into the most up-to-date polyester blends and anti-microbial, anti-smell shirts that make for a much more enjoyable experience. This current, detailed treatment is applied to all beginner hiking subjects, in an easy-to-digest, conversational style that is a joy to read.Most hiking how-to books read like research papers, often filled with extremely basic, oversimplified info that, quite frankly, offends the sensibilities of most seasoned hikers. Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it tells you everything you need to know to begin backpacking and hiking, while providing much more in-depth knowledge in each chapter for those that want to take the hobby further. The advice is solid, current, tried and true, which makes it a great book for both new and veteran hikers.
I bought this for my 19 year old granddaughter. She loves to hike but has never given thought to safety or comfort or what to do if she is lost, etc.She fell off of a 200 foot sandy bluff last June ending with a mild concussion, bruises and scratches. I can't put a bubble around her (darn it) but I can give her information.She dove into this book fast and finished it fast! I can only tell you that if you have a loved one that loves the outdoors, this is an excellent book. It touches on all that encompasses hiking and backpacking. It has also prompted her to read more about the subject. Until I can get that bubble I spoke of....wait...she'll never agree to go in it. :)
I bought this book, along with several others, for a planned hike this summer with friends who have also never taken a long-distance, overnight event. The book answers all the questions a beginner has, along with those I didn't know to ask. It's a fabulous resource for the day hiker as well as the long-distance athlete, with instructions for identifying and selecting a trail, training your body and mind for the task, gear and supplies, conditions and hazards a hiker could/will encounter on the trail and survival skills. Need advice on hiking for infants or the elderly? It's all here. There's even a section on how to hike with your dog!The book is extremely user-friendly and the section on footwear was a gold mine for me. Appendix C has a checklist of gear to shop for, and I'll be taking this guide to the store. Appendix B has a list of books, magazines and websites for still more information, although the book itself is a hiker's bible. Hikers will benefit from Mr. Stevenson's advice regardless of their skill set. Highly recommend!
Let me be clear - I do a lot of hiking and backpacking and would be offended if someone on the trail called me an "idiot." But, maybe I'm more of an idiot, er, novice than I thought, but I haven't been able to put down the book, especially as I'm planning for a week in the Sierra Nevada this summer. Just today I consulted it before heading to REI to replace my favorite hiking boots. Thanks to the book, I've downgraded from heavyduty to midweight boots - much more appropriate for what I do. I've also already learned that I've been putting the heavy items in the wrong part of my pack. The book is full of great text and super- useful pictures and diagrams that help you sort though all the terrific information.Don't get me wrong, the book is great for beginners. The bottom line is that it's very, very thorough and very, very well-organized, so people at any skill level can benefit from reading it. I've read some of the competing beginners guides to backpacking and hiking and they're not nearly as concise and seem to focus just on backpacking. This book covers both hiking and backpacking - so it's a real beginner's guide.I just hope that Stevenson soon writes The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting More Vacation Time. I'd preorder it in a heartbeat.
This book is great especially for a beginner (which is why I bought it). It covers the necessities needed for daytime, overnight or longer hiking trips, what to take along, etiquette on how to behave on the trails and with other hikers and campers you may meet. What kind of snacks and foods to take along, how to check on weather conditions and checking in at the place where you'll be hiking so people know to come hunting for you. Clothing needs, sleeping needs, and everything you need for a safe, fun trip. They offer cautions. Bathroom etiquette while on the trails. A very good guide to help prepare you for what to expect in simple, easy to understand terms. I would recommend this to others. A great guide to being prepared.
I felt the author tried to cover too wide a subject. He should have stuck to just backpacking. The information was good and I'm glad I read it but he sort of strayed into camping and other subjects that I was not interested in. It's a bit more like a text book that you will check certain chapters for certain subjects.

So its porno. Whatever. That's why I read it. The background of 50's New York is well written. Her description using all the senses isn't obnoxiously verbose like some boring wordsmiths. Maybe the pornography was added for marketing, I don't know. But it went well with her squalid living, listening to good music, eating and drinking, and hanging with her interesting misfit coterie. Even though this is a fictional memoir, I just know her real youth makes my teenage years in high school seem dull.
What a wonderful, freeing narrative of a young woman living without the usual inhibitions we carry.Not a word about a career path, nothing about keeping up with anything, except literature.I hope not too much of this was fiction and that she really lived this way. It shows us the potential of what we can be. Sex at it's most passionate and raw, and sensual. And love too, her willingness to follow her heart, even when it was to desire a skinny dirty anxious junkie on a dirty floor. Even when he broke her heart she went on loving. Recommended to all and should be required reading in high school. Thank you Diane.
When I ordered this book I expected it to be nothing more than a slightly cleaned up recital of the beat life. My uncles told me how it was growing up about this time. They didn't tell me about this aspect of the beat life. At first I thought, this book is mere porno until I realized that this was just one facet of the beat life. An aspect that every generation has to deal with. No different, no better or no worse in learning on the run. A good book, if one to keep away from the kiddies.
Everything a beat junkie could ever want and then some. Sometimes you are or you aren't. You do or you don't. Why not? Because f-ing why not?I liked it. A good read over all. If you are easily offended then this is not for you. Or maybe it is? If you think morality belongs in the editing room then again this is especially written for you.If you've come here looking for answers go find you're own.

Listen, if you're looking for a historic autobiography, this isn't the book. I read Carolyn Cassady's "Off the Road" and was expecting something like that. DiPrima is an incredible writer, and provides what might be a significant historical snapshot of sexual revolution, but it's in a completely different vein. She'd make "Penthouse letters" blush with this stuff. An awesome read. I read the whole thing in one sitting. Do not read in public. You'll feel like everyone is staring at you.
This is low grade pornography. Nothing at all like the people I remember from those days.You might try " Minor Characters" by Joyce Johnson for something closer to reality.
a recent article on diane diprima in the chicago tribune (4/19/2000) called di prima's "memoirs of a beatnik" - "a sort of insider's Beat exploitation book Di Prima wrote in 1968 for Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press in Paris because she needed money badly--and quickly." It goes on to state that "It is mostly accurate, [di prima] said, except for the sex parts."with that said, i doubt the book aspires to make any type of high-brow feminist or literary statement. the fact that is does make any such statement can be attributed to the time in which it was written. it is basically an account of a young woman venturing out on her own in times when young women did not do such things. young women lived at home, maybe went away to college, met a nice suitable young man, and got married. maybe had a job as a typist in the meantime. sex was not something young women from nice families experimented with.this is not to say the book does not have its merits. it is artfully written, intelligent, and poetic. it's a great look at the obstacles women faced when they decided to do their own thing, especially when that differed from society's norms. it's a peek inside the counterculture that was growing larger and larger thanks to a certain jack kerouac. all of this raises the book above being just plain old erotica. as a fan of beat writing and culture, i enjoyed the book very much.of course, the drawback to this book is that someone reading this book without knowledge of the context in which it was published will come away from it with a view of the beats that is as cartoonish and two-dimensional as the rest of society's view was of them at the time. "oh wow, look, the beats were always having sex." - "oh yeah, man, that's what they were about. coffee, sex, and alcohol. (and bongos and poetry and black berets)"maybe that's why the title of this book is "memoirs of a beatnik," and not "memoirs of a beat." major difference.

I purchased "Zendoodle; 101 Zendoodle Patterns to Inspire Your Inner Artist" by Olivia Summers for my Kindle Fire last month. I am still fairly new to Zentangle and wanted to learn some new patterns. This was an excellent purchase and a great value! I have purchased a few other books that have very few patterns for the size of the book and others that have poor step by step instruction. I am happy to say this book was fantastic! The patterns are shown with enough steps (most are 5 to 6) to get you started easily. One of my favorite parts of the book is the occasional completed work shown with the pattern name to give you an idea of how to use the patterns together. And the pattern names are all listed which is very nice!This book is all business, no fluff and a great deal for all the patterns taught! Highly recommended!
Ms Summers delivers what she promises, 101 new doodles. I will use most of them I am sure.The pictures she offers every 5 or 6 pages (then tells you which of the 101 doodles she's using) have helped me develop my own artistic perspective.These doodles can be simple. Most have a certain complexity to them. Best for those with intermediate or advanced practice in doodling I would say.
I love this new collection of zendoodle patterns! It's so nice to sit and browse through Olivia's new book and just enjoy looking at the lovely designs. Then I pick up my pens and begin to meditate in drawing my zendoodles! Thanks so much Olivia!
Olivia gives us 5 to 6 simple steps to follow, along with 2 sets of 6 blank blocks to practice. Also, she includes examples of how we could combine patterns, along with large blank squares to practice. Smaller size of the book makes it easy to throw into my purse, have to admit that I'm taking it everywhere. If Olivia doesn't have a sequel available when I finish this one, I'll have to buy this it again!
I'm a newbie but I must say that I am loving this! Ms Sommers' illustrations and easy to understand instructions make for easy understanding. I own all of her Zendoodle books 1-4. I'm still praticing...
Too basic. Its more of a u do book than an example book.

Donald B. Kraybill is Distinguished Professor and Senior Fellow at Elizabethtown College's Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. He is a nationally recognized scholar on Anabaptist groups and has written or edited more than eighteen books, including The Riddle of Amish Culture (1989; rev. ed. 2001) and Amish Enterprise: From Plows to Profits (1995; rev. ed. 2004).James P. Hurd is Chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Bethel University. An anthropologist by training, he has done fieldwork in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and rural Pennsylvania.

I'm reading this for research for a writing project. But I'm finding it highly readable for something that could be very dry. There are plenty of quotes from "Horse and Buggy Mennonites" and I feel I'm really getting a good flavor of the life and ideologies of these extraordinary people. Exactly what I need to give depth and empathy to my character. Not only does it describe the details of daily life, but all the reasons why these measures and the opposition to modernisms support their theology. It's done objectively, with great respect and even a touch of humor..Also, the vendor from whom I purchased the book was very quick, and the used book was in better condition than described in my opinion.
"Horse-andBuggy Mennonites" is an excellent, sympathetic, sociological study of one of the Mennonite subgroups in the US. On issues of community viability and love for the earth, the horse-and-buggy (Wenger) Mennonites can teach us lot. Kraybill is a student of various Mennonite groups and he applies all his skills in this presentation.
Exceptionally well written analysis of the Wenger Mennonites. I have many families on the Wenger Mennonites as neighbors. One actually lent me this book to read. I had to have my own copy as a later reference. Very factual and reasonably up to date. Kraybill captures the essence and soul of this beautiful group.

This is a book about what works and doesn't work in mixing colors for iridescent effect. The author clearly explains aspects of color, how colors relate to each other, and how weave structure can affect the final appearance. She's done the experiments (lots of photos of finished samples and garments), so we can grab our colors and get weaving.Drafts aren't necessary; apply this knowledge to your own drafts.The book is so good that I'm buying a copy for a friend. That way she won't borrow mine.
I love this new book and all it offers. It isn't a recipe book for weaving projects - however, some drafts are given and will be helpful in exploring different techniques. There is a thorough explanation of iridescence that occurs in nature which I found very interesting, and then of course, how to achieve it when weaving textiles. This is a "jumping off place" book. You learn what has worked for the author and others through many wonderful color photos. Then, you start your own experiments. I see many weaving adventures ahead and thank the author for sharing her experience and knowledge with the handweaving community.
This is a very comprehensive look at iridescence in weaving and how to obtain it. Bobbie defines this phenomena as an “apparent change in color as the angle of view changes†and then explains how the weaver’s choice of color, materials and structure can influence this perspective. Personally, I love this book, although since it’s heavy on theory and lighter on rote projects (there are just four completely spelled-out projects, in the final chapter) it might not be for everyone. I’ve explored a lot about iridescence since Marian Stubeneski’s book, “Weaving with Echo and Iris†came out, and Bobbie’s book does not create any overlap in my library. The “Echo†book acheives iridescence essentially through an echo-threading (I’m over-simplifying here) and Bobbie’s book relies more on the color wheel to create the look. I’m not averse to marking up my books, but with Bobbie’s book, it’s one of the few times I actually got out a highlighter marker to try to make the most salient points easier to spot when I refer back to her advice. Because of the nature of this type of weaving, she states a truism, but then has a lot to say about the exceptions to the rules. Also, it never hurts me to haul out the color wheel and really work with it. This is a great addition to any weaver’s library and could be the basis of a wonderful study group!
This book will get you quickly moving towards weaving iridescence. It teaches color theory and doesn't lean too much on convention. She encourages experimentation while explaining what works how. :)
I took Bobbie Irwin's Iridescence class several years ago and this book was a great next step for me. I'm glad she wrote it so I don't have to rely on my, somewhat failing, memory
This book covers a lot of ground. I wish that it was more in depth on some of the topics, but it gives a good start to understanding how to achieve iridescence in weaving.

About the Author
Ann Knackendoffel is an assistant professor in the Department of Special Education, Counseling and Student Affairs, at Kansas State University. She earned her PhD in Special Education from the University of Kansas. Her interest in collaboration and consulting began with her dissertation research on collaboration between general and special educators and it has continued with her being lead author of a book on collaborative problem solving and in her role as co-author of the previous two editions of this book. Dr. Knackendoffel has been a teacher at both elementary and secondary levels and a special educator for students with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and emotional and behavior disorders. She currently teaches a graduate-level course in consultation and collaboration for special educators at Kansas State University. She has also conducted numerous workshops and conference presentations on collaborative school consultation. She has authored online course materials used the introductory special education courses for general education majors and teaches a section of that course. Dr. Knackendoffel also teaches graduate courses for special education majors in academic interventions, assistive technology, and teaches an online course about students with disabilities for college advisors as part of an online graduate program in college academic advising. Her particular interests are in collaborative problem solving, educational technology, and the utilization and supervision of paraeducators. Peggy Dettmer is professor emeritus of Education at Kansas State University, where she earned an MS in Special Education and a PhD in Educational Psychology. For several years she chaired the Educational Psychology and Counseling Department and directed the College of Education honors program. Her 42 years of teaching experience includes teaching K-8, coordinating gifted programs for a special education cooperative, teaching and advising graduate and undergraduate students in teacher education, and directing federal and state grants for programs in education of gifted and talented. Her areas of teaching were educational psychology, assessment for effective teaching, education of gifted and talented students, creativity, professional development, and collaborative school consultation. She has written a number of books and articles for refereed journals and has conducted numerous professional development activities on these topics. She chaired the Professional Development Division of the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) and participated in construction of NAGC program standards for education of gifted, as well as state standards for special education in Kansas. Areas of professional interest include the constructive use of adult differences for teaching and collaborating; context-adaptive planning and assessment to enhance classroom teaching; and providing responsive environments for teaching and learning. Linda P. Thurston is a professor in the Department of Special Education, Counseling and Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, and Lydia E. Skeen Endowed Chair in Education at Kansas State University. In addition to teaching research and evaluation courses at the graduate level in the College of Education, she founded of a university-based evaluation center and led efforts to create a graduate certificate in social justice education. Thurston has published and taught in the areas of disabilities, gender, family, and issues related to social justice in evaluation and education. She served as a program officer in the Education and Human Resources Directorate at the National Science Foundation for several years.

This is probably one of the most entertaining things I have ever done. I'm twenty and unashamed that I bought this for myself, and I adore doing creative things like this!
These books are AMAZING I have so many different ones, they make you active and interactive. A book that makes you creative, think, explore, play, exercise, search, research, destroy... And so much more. So worth getting, good luck picking just one!

this book is a little like wreck this journal but i feel like it requires more thinking and time. its a little harder to be creative with this one as well as mess. also this book gets to you on a more personal level its like it wants to know about your life past present and future, it wants you to examine it and really think about it. over all id say its a deep book.
Fun for all ages
If you get bored often or just want to create something that might be sentimental to you one day i would recommend getting this. It does ask you to do some pretty crazy stuff but it's fun and before you know it you've got all of your pens and art supplies out doodling away.
If you're wondering... This Is Not A Book is a book about what you want to make of it. Hahaha, see what I did there? Yeah? No? Oh well... anyway, its a GREAT companion book to F NISH TH S BO K by her or her other book Destroy This Journal. I, personally, thought this was really interesting. If you like puzzle books, you should check this out. See if your friend or family member has one and look through it.
