I just finished reading this book. Actually, I've read all but three chapters to my youngest son, but I put him to bed and I had to finish it! He is in 4th grade, with an 8th grade reading level, but still enjoys it when I read to him. I loved the story. It was a bit predictable in places, but then again, how many ways are there to hide clues to treasure, and at the same time prevent just anyone from finding it? All in all, a great book for late elementary/early middle school, or even younger precocious chapter-book readers. As the ending seemed to set up for another book, I'm assuming this will be a series, and we're looking forward to reading it.
I read Addison Cooke to my 7-year old son. It's a page-turner that kept us up late many times! The book teaches children about South America, Incan history, and working together as a team to solve problems. It's filled with adventure from Manhattan to Machu Picchu and humor along the way (it took about five minutes to calm down from laughing during the wedding cake scene). We can't wait for the next adventure with the Cookes!
My 11-year old daughter LOVES this book, and she can't wait to get her copy of the 2nd book in the series. Hurry up, Mr. Stokes - she's going to want a 3rd book before too long!

I knew next to nothing about the battle of Borodino before I read this book. I knew it was a large battle of Napoleon's Russian campaign and it was depicted in War and Peace, but that was about it. After reading this book, Borodino is one of my favourite battles of all the Napoleonic wars. In fact, this book is among the best accounts of Napoleonic combat I have read, second only to Bernard Cornwell's superb Waterloo. Borodino is a lot like Waterloo: A titanic, bloody struggle fought all day long between two large armies determined to win for their country.The book is entirely about the battle of Borodino, and is not a book on the whole Russian campaign. The battle itself is covered in most pages of the book, and multiple black and white illustrations supplement the text nicely. Both the Russian and French order of battle is shown at the end of the book. The cost of Borodino was staggering: 80,000 or more French and Russian soldiers killed or wounded in just one day. Think about that for a minute. It was far worse than Gettysburg, Antietam, or Shiloh when it comes to 19th century battles. It even surpassed Waterloo and Austerlitz in carnage of other Napoleonic battles.But I absolutely loved this book. For Napoleonic buffs, it is a must buy. It should be shelved alongside other military classics. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Another excellent book we needed years ago. Of course there are dozens of books on Borodino battle of the Napoleonic campaign if 1812 - but this one by an outstanding historian provides so much critical information and analysis from the Russian view point that it is essential - I love the cover by Verischagin and have an exact version of it made in Zinnfiguren. - I envy professors of Russian history today for the new scholarly works they now have available.I wrote a lengthy review on my web site some years ago.
READ CAREFULLY> This is an well written history but as someone earlier commented the proofing on the Kindle edition is horrible! Less than 12% into it and it's missing letters! "Flank" becomes "lank". "Fire" becomes "ire". "Satisfied" is "satisied". It's like reading a third grade spelling quiz. This edition does the author an atrocious disservice. It's not like you can't figure out the words. But do you really want to spend your money on such a poorly produced product?
From a content and quality of writing viewpoint, book this book is excellent. Using Russian sources adds something extra to the content. The writing style flows well and is very readable. On that basis, I recommend this book. Unfortunately, I bought the Kindle edition of this book and the typesetting has a massive, annoying flaw... many f's are missing, e.g., instead of "drawing the troops fire" it is "drawing the troop's ire". Argh. didn't anyone proofread the Kindle edition? I hope the print edition does not have the same flaw. In particular, it is most, but not all, f's before the letter i or l that are missing. I know that in standard typesetting there is a special 'combined' f+l and f+i character that is used. Whatever the publisher did to produce the Kindle edition screwed up royally here. The weird thing is, not all 'fl' and 'fi' combinations are messed up, but the majority of them are. The publisher really needs to fix this. Too bad Amazon doesn't have a way to push a 'reprint' update to me automatically. After the Borodino book, I was planning on also reading the author's work on Berezina as well. Now, I am a little leery about spending the money and finding out if that book has the same problem.
Very informative...Became interested after reading Tolstoy’s War and Peace... My only complaint is that the letter “fâ€, as would be used in “fireâ€, “flècheâ€, and “flank†were missing throughout the book, obviously a printer’s error...
Well researched, well written, endlessly interesting! A Wonderful history of one of the mist important battles of the Napoleonic Wars and the 19th Century. Filled in with informative charts and appendices. Great maps and illustrations. But Too many formatting errors and missing letters. Why is this still the case for so many great Kindle books?
Very informative, with old sources newly available after the Soviet collapse. Very good choices of first hand narratives from participants on both sides.But most impressive is the orderliness of the book. In this regard, the best battle book I ever read.

This is my first Rough Guides book. I usually use Lonely Planet, but the LP for Malaysia is really out of date and is pretty terrible. So I bought this one.How does it stack up to LP? There are some good points and bad points here. First of all, the font makes it easier to read than LP. Second, the writing is clearer and more straightforward than LP. There is more background information about a place and a site than with LP. Rough Guides lists more budget-friendly hotels and hostels, but at the same time, party hostels get higher ratings than non-party hostels.The biggest problem with the book, though, is the binding. There is something wrong with it so that it's difficult to open the book up fully to read the whole page making reading it a pain in the butt.
One of the best guidebooks for traveling in Malaysia. Pertinent and timely information.

Jo Knowles is one of the best YA authors writing today. Whether she's writing from the point of view of a female or male characters, she does it without any hint of condescension. Her writing is honest and real. Josh has sex with a girl and she gets pregnant. Jumping Off Swings tells her story. Living With Jackie Chan tells Josh's story, picking up after the baby is born. Read Jumping Off Swings first if you can. You may come away from it with some preconceived notions about Josh. Living With Jackie Chan will challenge those notions, and will also make you look at real life similar situations a little differently.
This exceptional young adult novel will stay with you long after the final page. The story covers a year in the life of a boy named Josh who has gone to live with his uncle in order to escape from the burden of facing the consequences of something in his recent past. We’re not told exactly what this is right away, but Jo Knowles slowly reveals what is troubling Josh as he adapts to his temporary life during his final year in high school. It shows that many of life’s big problems are inescapable, that we must own up to our mistakes, make amends whenever possible and to persist in living life. The budding relationship between Josh and Stella, a girl his age who lives in the same building and accompanies him to his daily lessons at his uncle’s martial arts school, allows us to experience how people are often mired in harmful relationships by refusing to recognize them for what they are and to make the changes that are needed. Told in the first person point of view, we live the book through his eyes as he comes to terms with his actions, his parents, his uncle, and his feelings toward Stella, a multi-faceted conflict that goes well beyond the normal teen angst over girls. This book reminds us that no one is perfect, but that the choices we make will determine what kind of person we are capable of becoming, that choice is the first step on the road to salvation or a turn toward oblivion.
Living With Jackie Chan is the sequel to Jumping off Swings. Both of these books deal with the contentious issue of teen pregnancy and its ramifications. In Living With Jackie Chan Josh, a teen boy whose one-night stand led to parenthood, deals with the aftermath of his poor decision making. After losing his virginity in the back of a van to a girl he cared nothing about, Josh finds himself dealing with the self-loathing and guilt that came about after she gets pregnant and gives the baby up for adoption. Josh's reaction is perfectly natural but it is one that is overlooked in annals of teen pregnancy stories. No one stops to think about the emotional fall-out for teen boys when they lose their virginity or father a child they will never see. This raw and emotional look at both of those challenges the reader to think about sex in a bigger emotional context.
Josh takes time out away from home to process his feelings about becoming a father yet sharing no part of his child's life. He spends this time living with his uncle and learning what it means to be a "true karate man."I loved the story and Josh 's journey to maturity, but for the most part he was so unlikable that I almost abandoned him. While this shows the character's development, that character ought to be likeable enough that the reader cares about him and invested in the story.Fortunately, this story held my attention and will keep me reading more from one of my favourite authors.
I thought "Jumping Off Swings" was interesting, and I was curious about the sequel. While I thought a little too much time was spent inside Josh's head, it also felt like that made sense, given all of the things he was trying to process. I think "Living with Jackie Chan" might be great to partner with "Hanging on to Max" by Bechard and "The First Part Last" by Johnson in a classroom literature study of issues.
This book was referred to me as a well-written YA novel about teen pregnancy. Wonderfully written, It's interesting that it's told from the teen boy's point of view. But there's a depth of sensitivity that just seemed beyond credibility. I think it's a very gentle book that explores the boy's agony about losing a child to adoption, but I'm a little jaded to believe that the motives all ring true.

This coloring book has a little bit of a lot of different pictures to color. The reason for 4 stars is because the pictures are prints on every single page and it's very difficult to color the ones that are on the backside of each page and in some cases you can't even get to the rest of the picture, the book will not open all the way. I do not like having a picture on the left side of every page and on the right side, but particularly on the left. This book has a wonderful assortment, not exactly what I'd call Tattoo but a fun book none the less. I would highly recommend this seller and would only recommend the book to people who don't mind that every single page has an illustration on it.
Lots of good pics and I love the texture of the paper!! The only draw back is that they printed on both sides and they didn't leave any indentations for pulling them out and being able to frame your work!!
This by far is my favorite coloring book. I love that the pictures have so much detail, this helps me on my shading and coloring for when i draw my own pictures.
