THIS IS EXCEPTIONAL BOOK. I'M MIDWAY THROUGH AND EAGER TO CONTINUE THIS EXTENSION OF BENJAMIN'S WORK.
Jessica Benjamin’s work is among the few bodies of work in relational psychoanalytic theory in which an entire system is proposed. Her work revolves around a theme—recognition theory, intersubjectivity, and the Third--the very subject of this book—commodious enough to contain all of psychoanalysis. This is a theory that has implications for every theoretical, developmental, and clinical question. I am not exaggerating when I say that. I defy you to come up with an aspect of psychoanalysis that this theory does not touch on in one way or another. Comprehensiveness is one reason that Benjamin’s work has been so influential. But of course there are others. For one, the work is formidable. Benjamin’s thinking simply cannot be pooh-poohed on either intellectual or clinical grounds. Its critics can disagree with it, which is fine--but they can’t—and they know they can’t—dismiss it. They must engage with it. The work’s comprehensiveness and the respect it commands are accompanied by another quality that I think has mattered greatly: the work is immensely appealing. It privileges human connection--but unlike most other theories of that kind, it takes our failures in that respect just as seriously as our successes, and pays at least as much attention to them. In Benjamin’s theory of recognition, we recognize ourselves and our struggles—our best moments and our worst—as psychoanalysts, patients, parents, lovers and friends. In noting the qualities that make Benjamin’s work influential, we can’t overlook its commitment to an ethical and moral stance: the central significance for psychoanalysis of human freedom, and the unapologetic claim that psychoanalysis is a moral endeavor. I find this property, which has been deeply important to me in Benjamin’s work ever since her first, groundbreaking book, The Bonds of Love (1988), not only enlightening but deeply admirable. This is not your grandfather’s psychoanalysis--and I’m so glad it’s not. And finally, there is Benjamin’s insistence on clinical discipline. That is one of the themes I took away from Beyond Doer and Done To, and I appreciate it because I agree with it, but also because it is one of those qualities in Benjamin’s work that makes it impossible for those with more conservative psychoanalytic views to dismiss her. I quote from the end of Chapter 2: “Analytic work conducted according to the intersubjective view of two participating subjectivities requires a discipline based on orientation to the structural conditions of thirdness. It is my hope that this clinical and developmental perspective on co-created intersubjective thirdness can help orient us toward responsibility and more rigorous thinking, even as our practice of psychoanalysis becomes more emotionally authentic, more spontaneous and inventive, more compassionate and liberating to both our patients and ourselves†(p. 48). Doer and Done To is highly original, immensely erudite, morally and intellectually powerful, and profound. It is a mature statement, by which I mean is that Benjamin is finally free to take for granted the place of intersubjectivity in the psychoanalytic world. The movement her ideas has inspired has long since arrived. And so now, no longer needing to clear a space for herself and her thinking, she can turn her full attention to the elaboration of the developmental and clinical issues of intersubjectivity that have always been at the center of her interest. To these issues, Benjamin has added in this book a consideration of the social/political. I wish that everyone involved in situations of violence and collective trauma around the world, both those who commit the violence and those who suffer it, could not only read, but heed, Chapter 7, “Beyond ‘Only One Can Live’†This book’s primary concern is clinical psychoanalysis; but Benjamin’s intersubjectivity theory has always been a truly interdisciplinary project, and Benjamin expresses in these pages her hope that the social and philosophical implications of this book, and no doubt all of her work, will appeal to non-psychoanalysts, as well. I share that hope. It would be broadening for them, no doubt about that, but that’s not the only reason I’d like to see this book have that kind of cross-disciplinary impact; I also would like for all the non-psychoanalysts to understand, which very few of them do, what psychoanalysis today has to offer. And what better representative than Benjamin’s work? No matter whether you read in a year five books or fifty in psychoanalysis, gender studies, cultural studies, or social philosophy, this needs to be one of them. It’s that significant.
This is an elusive topic, but Benjamin's writing is lucid and allows one to move through complex ideas with relative ease. Her ideas take us beyond intersubjetivity, into the realm of an exquisitely nuanced dance between "doer" and "done to." As a psychotherapist with many decades of experience in long term treatments, I found the author articulating experiences I hadn't quite been able to describe even to myself. I've long been concerned with the issue of therapist apology and./ or acknowledgement of doing harm to the patient, mindful of the old training "rules" and mindful too of the human necessity of acknowledging responsibility when we inevitably harm each other. Benjamin's thoughts are welcome, partly because she comes down on the side that I favor and even more because she describes in great detail the ways in which such acknowledgment is psychically organizing and how it supports regulation, autonomy and integrity. She also writes clearly of the therapist's need not only to tolerate uncertainty, disregulation, blankness, helplessness and fear, but also to expose those states to the patient (with judgement and sensitivity) as a way of creating the conditions for deep change.This is not just a book about psychotherapy. It doesn't flinch from issues of morality, most notably the moral necessity of what Ellie Wiesel called "Witnessing." Benjamin has done a masterful job of showing us that regardless of training or school of thought, moral issues must be acknowledged and lived in the therapeutic encounter.
Essential reading. Spans the gamut between the psychological and the sociopolitical. Shows how the post-Freudian stance of equivalence and immersement (rejecting the authoritarianism of “the one who knows†) links up with efforts at reconciliation in the many, many theaters of war and oppression.

I don't know why I decided to buy this book. I never particularly liked Geithner or his policies, and I've already read several good books about the financial meltdown of 2007-2008. However, I did end up picking it up and reading it, and I'm glad I did.To my surprise, Geithner comes across as very likable. Of course, likability is not a critical characteristic for a great Treasury Secretary. However, it's a necessary and maybe even a critical characteristic if you're going to read a 500-page book by a Treasury Secretary; had I found him obnoxious, I doubt I would have finished this (and you can see my review of "Duty" by Robert Gates for proof of that). Geithner comes across as extremely intelligent but not at all a "peacock," to use one of his words. He readily admits that he screwed up in many ways, and he makes no bones about his failings. At the same time, he takes us through the panics (his own and that of the economy) and his approach to his responsibilities, and he seems to be, well, human.The book is also not even remotely snarky. He is candid in expressing his views of a number of other key players in dealing with the meltdown, and he's not always complimentary. However, his views are policy-based rather than personal, and he doesn't shy away from giving credit where credit is due to people he's not fond of from a policy point of view.I also learned a lot about the financial crisis that I didn't learn from the other books I've read. Much of that new knowledge is the "inside story" that Geithner tells, of course, but it's an interesting and important story, and I found him more or less persuasive.My comment about the sausage-making is the only negative. In order to tell the inside story he feels he must tell (and I can't really blame him for wanting to tell it), he gives lots and lots of detail about various financial institutions' failures and rescues and many details of how the policies (i.e., the sausage) was made. IMHO, these lengthy discussions could have been edited a bit more judiciously, and doing so would have made the book more readable (not that it's unreadable - it's just long and rather too detailed). However, while I've deducted one star to reflect this view, I believe this is a worthy book and, in fact, a worthy man.
This book is user friendly, well written and well thought out. It shows that Obama chose his Secretary of the Treasury very wisely. The detail is amazing, but not in the least boring. It reads like a novel. Geithner was the exact right man for the job, already skilled and savvy in the knowledge of how to go about rescuing nations from economic crisis. This is well worth the read and impressive. Geithner emerges as a very likable and admirable human being, who just happened to be in the right time and place to save us from Depression 2.0.
The Great Recession and financial panic of 2007-2009 has a lot of myths and stories surrounding it concerning what the government did or didn't do, what it should've done and shouldn't have done, and the motives of those working behind the scenes. Former Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner is one of those lighting rod figures from the crisis who, because of his relative anonymity prior to the crisis, is often misunderstood or caricatured. In this book, Sec. Geithner not only dispels the myths about his own background, but also provides a unique insight and perspective on the panic from one of the only two people in high government who was there from beginning to end (Fed chairman Ben Bernanke being the other one). But his story, and his experiences with financial panics, doesn't start in 2007, but rather starts with his upbringing in a family that was involved in international development and finances from when he was very young, always moving from one country to another and spending very little time in America. From there, it moves on to his time as a civil servant in the Treasury department's international wing, dealing with the crises brought on the by the Asian financial panics of the 1990s and eventual rising to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in charge of the international branch. From those times Mr. Geithner picks up a lot of invaluable experience in financial panics, what makes them better, and what makes them worse. From there he makes the surprising leap to head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the most powerful of the regional Federal Reserve Boards in the country. And that is where the main story begins as Mr. Geithner describes the events that led to the panic, the actions he took as FRBNY chair and then Treasury Secretary, why they took them, and why they were necessary even if they were both unpopular and counterintuitive. The book reaches its climax with the stress tests backed by promises of capital injections for those banks the tests deemed were in need of them. Once the results of the test are released in the spring of 2009 a certain measure of calm enters the markets and the last chapters feel like a denouement as he deals with the Eurozone crisis and the toxic politics of Washington following the ascendancy of the Tea Party in 2010. What is surprising is how in the first half of the book Mr. Geithner seems to undersell himself, not out of a sense of humility, but because he genuinely seemed to believe that there were other people better or more knowledgeable than him. From my perspective, it seems like a no-brainer that Pres. Obama tapped him to be Treasury Secretary, even if he was a terrible salesman (a flaw that he readily, even jokingly, admits to being). Since studying with Stan, the way I work with my couples changed drastically, and helped my couples tremendously. Not to mention how my own intimate relationship has benefited enormously. It lays a strong foundation on what it means to be in a win-win relationship, and how to avoid the pitfalls we all face at times; pitfalls that can destroy relationships when not dealt with efficiently. I wish I had known all of this material years ago. So many wasted years. And more importantly, I'm glad I found Stan. It's never too late to have a great relationship!
Tatkin's book is much more balanced and practical than many of the attachment-based relationship books out there. His explanation of the neurobiology of attraction is easy to understand and incredibly important in making sense of new relationship experiences and changes in thinking and behavior that can otherwise be puzzling or hurtful. He offers practical ideas for how to understand one's own and others' needs in relationship and styles of relating, and how to take better care of oneself before and during the development of a potential partnership. The book is written for people seeking a healthy relationship with a long-term committed partner, but many of my clients have found it useful for healthier ways to approach dating in general, even when commitment is not a current goal.
This book helped me learn about myself, my parents and what I was looking for in a partner. It actually helped me find and be a reassuring, secure partner.

I am a psychology major and have read many self help books. This is one of the best!
If you've read Stan's other books, then you have a sense of what's on offer here--smart, practical, neurobiologically and attachment informed relational advice--but this is his best so far. Stan has a knack for continuing to put out new, and better material: in addition to being a very sane guide to dating (I've not seen another one that takes its cue from the latest research, while also being original and creative), there are lots of exercises and general advice applicable to long-standing relationships as well. I am a clinical psychologist and of course human being with a vested interest in getting better at relationships and understanding what makes them work, and there are few writers or models out there I would recommend more highly. Definitely not to be missed.
The dating scenarios and explanations were too long. This felt like assigned reading for a Psychology 101 class on attachment theory and dating. STILL VERY USEFUL INFORMATION TO KNOW. My favorite parts were when the author disclosed how he vetted his partner in dating and about his wave-tendency, (attachment styles are anchor, island, and wave for secure, insecure avoidant, insecure ambivalent).
Pretty good, easy to understand. My LCSW recommended I read it. It's hard for me to assign everyone to a cookie cutter box, so I recommend taking it with a grain of salt but the message is still the same. I ultimately found it insightful and helpful.

Great book! I am just a soccer mom. I was reading it before I would let my 10 year old daughter read it. Mom approves. Lloyd is a great role model with such perseverance and a strong work ethic. All qualities I am trying to instill in my daughter.
I loved the book!Carli Lloyd has developed into a premier womens soccer player (perhaps the best in the world).Ms Lloyd tells the story of her rise from local recreational soccer to her winning of the 2015 womens Balon d'Or (award as the best womens soccer player in the world).Her journey starts as most, with her loving (although a bit overboard - helicopter as they call it today) parents. Her recognition in high school, club and college soccer, to her being cut from the womens U21 team.She meets her trainer James, and her life changes.James takes Carli and helps her to train, become physically fit, unselfish, and a good teammate - although Carli remains a bit neurotic.Other things happen to Carli however, as her relationship with her parents goes from great to no relationship.Eventually Carli does make it back to the Womens National Team, and goes on to win 2 Olympics, and finally a World Cup.The book talks about the relationships that Carli has with teammates, families, Brian (her seemingly saint like) boyfriend, parents, coaches and friends.While the effort and dedication that Carli Lloyd has to herself and to soccer is inspirational, it was very difficult (as a parent) to see her relationship with her parents dissipate to no contact for years. It always takes two parties to tango -as they say - and in this case, you cant help but feel that Carli is a tad bit selfish. And shame on her parents for allowing themselves to just ignore and avoid their own daughter. I was going to give the book 4 stars for this reason - until I realized that life is not like a movie - bad things do happen to good people, and not all problems can be solvedI found myself cheering for Carli, Cheering for her and her family to get back together (which did not happen in the book), and for my own kids to recognize the dedication to success that they will need, whether they continue to play sports or they choose other careers.
Both the person and the book. I think you need to be a soccer fan to understand all the soccer details that make up much of this book--the training, the strategy, the tourneys, the players, the coaches. But I don't think you need to be an athlete to understand the drive and commitment it takes to achieve and accomplish which Carli describes so simply, yet eloquently. You leave the book feeling you know her and, then, you realize how much you like her.
This was a fine read, but I could have done without a lot of the snark towards other USWNT players. Lloyd comes off as fairly unlikeable, angry at everyone, and a bit immature. You can definitely write an honest book without it being negative, but this book did not do that.
I'm a soccer gal from Jersey all grown up. I played competitively in youth and high school, then co-ed recreational through college and into motherhood (agree with Carli that pickup games and casual scrimmaging are the best places to improve). Now I occasionally coach. Reading this book, I found the writing so-so (refreshingly unshowy though) and the egocentrism of the narrator a bit of a grind, but I'm inspired to go back to coaching with a slightly different style based on challenging girls individually to keep beating their own best records.
Carli's story is a real inspiration for everyone! I hope my daughter will look up to people like her that work hard and don't give up and live life with integrity. My only minor complaint about the book is that the descriptions of all the games start to make it drag a little. Overall, I highly recommend the book.
Great description of her soccer and personal life throughout her career, including most recent World Cup experience. Detailed description of specific moves or plays, impressive. Interesting relationships with coaches and the US soccer administrators. Photos included. Mostly a biography rather than inspirational, but that is just my opinion. Good read.
Very insightful and inspiring. Carli put in the work and effort to get where she is today and while it has not always been easy, she prevailed. She puts it all out there and I didn't think I could respect her anymore than I already did, until I read this book. She is truly badass and real. Highly recommend this book for all.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Mexicans of good class made a mockery of the dandified women of native or mixed blood, who gussied up their clothes and assumed the airs of the foreigner or socialite. Cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada drew cartoons of them and published them in the local newspapers and prolific and irreverent painter Diego Rivera incorporated them into one of his signature murals, “Memories of a Sunday in the Alameda Parkâ€. He gave them a name, “catrinasâ€, and they are still mocked, celebrated, even awarded prizes in costume competitions, during of the “Day of the Deadâ€, a uniquely Mexican festivity that blends the struggles and pretentions, the sympathy and aspirations, of the existing world, with the conflicts and longing of the departed, from their residence in the Underworld.Something of this bleeds through Pamuk’s continually apologetic and ever dissatisfied view of the post-Ottoman Istanbul of his youth and yearnings, and a persistent conflict with the notions of “modernity†and “westernizationâ€, as if these were some sort of extra-terrestrial invasion. His self-pity knows no end. How could “My Name is Redâ€, so brilliant, have emerged from the same pen as “Istanbulâ€, which instead of lauding a unique city, spends endless pages deploring the sights, sounds, scents and scenes that make it so remarkable. Am I just another Westerner, cradling my taste for the exotic? Forgive my outrage. Like India, or Mexico, or Uzbekistan, or Peru—you name it—this is not a world that was, it is a world that still is, but different. It changed. Everything changes. One century flows into another, conquests vanish in burocracy, pinnacles becomes nadirs, the unique degenerates, and when has it ever been different?Our author, however, finally relents, if just a notch. He, and I, like Pierre Lotà in his time, find Eyüp enchanting. But then, I am a westerner, entranced by the charm of this distant neighborhood, nestled at the very end of the Golden Horn. Pamuk makes us feel guilty for even turning to look at it.
The book's subtitle, Memories and the City, guided me through the chapters, many of which can stand alone, with themes that weave in and out. Pamuk questions his own memories from the beginning, with a kind of “double†in another house where he lived briefly as a child, and with his older brother sometimes questioning his accounts of the past. His portrayal of growing up in a family with three generations in one apartment, even as he escaped into make-believe and games, seems both straightforward and complicated at the same time.Pamuk presents the City of Istanbul as seen through Western European photographs, paintings, and travel writings from the nineteenth century, and from Istanbul artists and writers, including journalists, a century later, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, as well as from his own experience of walking all over its different neighborhoods. He sees the neighborhoods falling into ruin, the mansions along the Bosphorus burning to the ground one after another, and his own family’s fortunes gradually crumbling. Against this decline and loss of pride, he sets his early love for painting, begun with a wish for praise and developing into joy of self-expression, and then reveals how he eventually chose to write instead.This book is hard to read straight through because of all the interweaving ideas, stories, and themes. But various chapters, images and passages echo and invite rereading, and as I reread, I love the book more and more. I only wish I could enlarge some of the photographs to see them in more detail.
Mr. Pamuk is a great writer from Istanbul and this book helped me understand him and Istanbul in a way that is both unique and revealing. If you are a fan of Mr. Pamuk's books, this is a good one to read, as yet another way to under the writer and his subject matters. However, if you want to learn about Istanbul and its unique, long history, please read an actual history book on Istanbul, for that, I whole-heartedly recommend Thomas Madden's book Istanbul: City of Majesty at the Crossroads of the World. I just visited Istanbul last month, and can testify to the fact that having read both books really helped me appreciate everything I saw.
Orhan Pamuk decided to write an autobiographical account of his decision to be a writer disguised as a book about a city. Growing up in Istanbul, with a formerly wealthy family that had to move several times as their fortunes waned, Pamuk was initially inclined to be a painter. He starts by describing the city through the eyes of other painters and writers, starting with the Europeans (mostly French) who visited the city from the eighteenth century on. Later he turns to the writings of Turkish authors, mostly journalists, who document the decline of the city after the end of the Ottoman Empire. A key uniting concept for these authors is huzun (Turkish for a particular type of melancholy). Another is the difficulty of reconciling the westernizing thrust of the government policies initiated under Ataturk and the nostalgia for doing things the old way. There are also many black and white photographs of the city interspersed through the text, some by the author and mainly of the city in the 1950s and 1960s when the author was still a boy. That city was beautiful when seen from the shores of the Bosphorus but some of its neighborhoods had rotted or burnt out wooden buildings and packs of wild dogs roaming the streets. The young Pamuk grows to love these neighborhoods and spends a lot of time painting them. I read this book after returning from a trip to Turkey. It helped me to understand better the city that I experienced for a short time as a tourist. The writing here is a bit long-winded and self-indulgent but I persisted and in the end I had a good opinion of the book and its writer. My friends who read this before me said I should have started with My Name is Red. Oh well.
