This was written by a detail person, who will tell you how to hold each finger as you braid. Great if you are comfortable with that style. Includes a number of projects, as well as brief background on leather, tools and materials. Does NOT include a great many braid patterns.
It is a really fine book. It explains how to fdo nthe different braids but te pictures could be clearer. There is the reason for the 4 star mark. I would recommend this book for a intermediate to pro leather smith as some of it has to come from knowledge already gained in the trade.
Am always looking for new things to do with leather, and look forward to seeing what I come up with.Would like to start whip making and hoping this helps out.
I like it. I think that when I have time that I can learn to do this using this book.
As described, very good
The subtitle and cover photo suggest that the book in focused on whip-making, which is not the case. While much of the text deals with the techniques that are used in whip-making, it is by no means a "how to make a whip" instructional text. Very well written with clear instructions and photographs of works in progress. Definitely recommended for people interested in leather braiding.
Well written. Easy to use.
Great leather working book.

This is NOT the entire book. It is only part of the book and ends midway. I'm really ticked off. Also the printing is really really odd. It's an odd printing with all the text in italics.
I had this book, and all the sequels, in my Kindle for a long time. It wasn’t until the other evening, when I surprisingly came across four movies made between 1939 and 1940, based on the characters from the “Five Little Peppers†books, that I dug out the first book of the series.First, the book and the movie didn’t have much in common except for most of the characters and a few storylines. That’s the way with a lot of movie versions. And now, my book review:The author’s writing style is a bit archaic, yet charming in its own way. The reader needs to bear in mind that Margaret Sidney (the nom de plume of Harriet Mulford Stone Lothrop) wrote these books from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth. These aren’t contemporary books, you see. Once that’s understood, the reading becomes easier. This story of a poor family whose father passed away, followed many different storylines that somehow managed to stay related to one another, yet it was disjointed some areas. Sidney’s switching names — given and nicknames alike — was distracting. Joel is Joe and Joey. Jasper is Junior and Jappy. Ben is Ebeneezer. Mrs. Pepper is Mammy and Mamsie. Polly is really Mary and Phronsie is really Sophronia, and thankfully they both stay “Polly†and “Phronsie,†respectfully, throughout. All in all, this is a good book that’s appropriate for young readers and older ones. It’s a good lesson in writing style, some interesting dialect, and the lives of a poor family who keeps positive and moral despite adversity.I look forward to keep plodding through the remaining books I have of this series.
I was delighted to discover I could instantly download to my Kindle what I presume is the Project Gutenberg free version of this nineteenth century children's classic. The formatting is not the most presentable I've ever seen in an ebook, due to missing tabs and hard returns to set off the paragraphs from each other. Fortunately, though, there are few typos, so the this version of the book is readable enough that I donated my paper copy to the library as I am gradually moving almost entirely to ebooks since I got my Kindle a year and a half ago. This book is about the Pepper family of five children and their widowed mother. "Mamsie" ekes out a bare living as a seamstress in a small New England town (the state isn't specified but perhaps is intended to be the author's native Connecticut). Though the story reads like an historical novel to modern readers, it was actually a contemporary novel when it was written in 1881. There are horse-drawn carriages instead of cars, candlelight instead of electric lamps, no running water, no refrigeration, and no central heating. The Peppers live in a "little brown house" whose furnishings are only lightly described. Perhaps this is because the house is mostly bare due to their extreme poverty, but it would have been interesting to know how the family acquired water for cooking and bathing (and how the family bathed), if they had a fireplace or a Franklin stove, or simply used the kitchen stove to heat the house in the winter. (The Little House books are great for providing these historically accurate details, but not this series.)Mrs. Pepper was widowed when her English husband died presumable shortly before or after her youngest child was born. We learn nothing about the children's father in this book as there is no attention at all to the family's "backstory." As the title of the book states, there are five siblings:Ben (Ebenezer) is twelve years old. He had to be at least eight when the father died, but he has never gone to school--though somewhere along the way he and his sister Polly learned to read and write, probably taught by their mother since any school that the children might go to would cost tuition that Mrs. Pepper cannot afford. Throughout the story, Mrs. Pepper frequently frets over how she is ever going to get enough money to pay to educate her sons (there is no real concern about educating her daughters, perhaps because females of the working class were not commonly educated at this time). Ben augments Mamsie's income by doing odd jobs such as chopping wood. Ben has a placid, phlegmatic disposition, plodding along diligently through life, sure and steady in all he does. He is utterly loyal and would make any sacrifice for his family. He and Polly are particularly close.Polly (Mary) is eleven years old. She and Ben act as second parents to their younger siblings whom they refer to as "the children." Polly has a nurturing disposition and is very motherly, but she also has a sensitive, imaginative disposition, which is a fascinating combination. She is the major focus of this book as she bustles about helping her mother with sewing, cooking meals for the family, cleaning the house, and caring for the younger children. She loves music and would give anything to be able to learn to play the piano. She adores any flowers that come her way, and the bane of her existence is the ancient wood stove she has to cook on which is full of holes that are stuffed with paper and leather from old shoes.Joel is nine years old. He has a passionate, impulsive, choleric disposition. It is very hard for him to maintain the uncomplaining, sacrificial attitude Mamsie has worked hard to instill in her children which comes easily to all the Peppers except him. He wants what he wants this instant, and he's very loud about his disappointment if he doesn't get it--in short, he's a normal boy who constantly puts the house in an uproar. Fortunately for the training Mamsie wants to instill in him, he has a warm heart and is readily brought into line with a judicious application of maternal or sisterly guilt.Davie (David) is seven years old. He has a placid, timid disposition. He is Joel's shadow and is ready to try anything Joel suggests.Phronsie (Sophronia) is four at the time of this story and is the adored baby of the family. Though she is indulged by everyone, because she is a beautiful, blond girl, she has a remarkably unspoiled disposition. She is so angelically sweet and kind to everyone, she inspires instant love in every man, woman, child, and dog who meets her.Though the family is barely scraping by, constantly on the verge of starvation (they live off whole-wheat bread, salted porridge, and potatoes), they have caring neighbors who try to help out when they can, which doesn't amount to a whole lot since everyone in the town is poor in their own way, and Mrs. Pepper is too proud to accept outright charity. Two big crises lay the Peppers low during the course of this story: all the children get measles, which almost makes Polly go blind, and Phronsie runs off with an organ grinder and his monkey, terrifying the whole village for her safety. It is this latter event which brings Jappy (Jasper) King into their lives, the thirteen-year-old son of the very rich Mr. King, a crotchety "old" man staying at a local hotel to improve his uncertain health. (Note that what was considered "old" in the latter part of the nineteenth century is not what we would consider "old" today. The average life expectancy at the turn of the twentieth century was little more than forty, and often people in their fifties in nineteenth century novels were labeled by authors as "old." Mr. King's age is never given, but I tried to figure it out this way: Mr. King is clearly a widower. Jasper has a much older sister with three sons, the oldest of which is ten at this time, meaning she is at least twenty-nine, making Mr. King very likely fifty-five or sixty years of age.) Mr. King's source of wealth isn't mentioned in the book, and we never hear of him going to work, so possibly he has inherited wealth rather than holding a job.Margaret Sidney was the pseudonym of successful, American children's author, Harriett Mulford Stone Lothrop, who was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1844 and died in 1924, eight years after writing the last Pepper book. She began her writing career in 1878 at age thirty-four by publishing stories about Polly and Phronsie Pepper in a Boston children's magazine. She married the magazine's editor, Daniel Lothrop, who began a publishing company and published Harriett's "Five Little Peppers" series, starting in 1881. Here is a list of the twelve Pepper books by date written, which were produced over the course of thirty-five years: Five Little Peppers and How They Grew (1881) Five Little Peppers Midway (1890) Five Little Peppers Grown Up (1892) Five Little Peppers: Phronsie Pepper (1897) Five Little Peppers: The Stories Polly Pepper Told (1899) Five Little Peppers: The Adventures of Joel Pepper (1900) Five Little Peppers Abroad (1902) Five Little Peppers At School (1903) Five Little Peppers and Their Friends (1904) Five Little Peppers: Ben Pepper (1905) Five Little Peppers in the Little Brown House (1907) Five Little Peppers: Our Davie Pepper (1916)Margaret Sidney originally had no plans to write more Pepper books after the fourth book, "Phronsie Pepper", was published in 1897. She stated this firmly in her introduction to that book. However, over time the pleas of avid fans from all over the world caused her to give in and write eight more Pepper books. The events in the last eight books take place before the events of the third book in the original series of four books. If you would like to read the six main Pepper books in chronological order, rather than by publication date, this is the ideal sequence: "Five Little Peppers and How They Grew" "Five Little Peppers Midway" "Five Little Peppers Abroad" "Five Little Peppers and Their Friends" "Five Little Peppers Grown Up" "Five Little Peppers: Phronsie Pepper"If you read all the Pepper books, you will discover that the author did not take great care as to continuity in the later books, perhaps because so many years passed between writing these books. I am currently re-reading the series and have just finished this book and the second book, "Midway," and am currently reading "Abroad." In "Midway," the author states that five years have passed since the events of "How They Grew," but no ages are given for any of the children except Phronsie. We are told she is eight, which is one year younger than she ought to be if five years have passed. In "Abroad," whose events begin immediately after "Midway," Polly has her fifteenth birthday a few months into the events of the book, when it ought to be at least her sixteenth birthday given that she was eleven in the first book and presumably already fifteen or sixteen in the second book. The Pepper books are not concerned with edge-of-the-seat action, which is one of the things I personally like about them. They are products of a much slower-paced era, and it is relaxing to experience that approach to children's fiction while being warmly enfolded into the loving Pepper family. This book, and all the Pepper books, are strictly G-rated, and the values they show (not tell through preaching) are very useful ones for any child to be exposed to, including civility, kindness, consideration, keeping commitments, accepting difficult circumstances without complaint and forging through them, and so on.I highly recommend this book for all ages.

I read a good deal of Discovering the Soul of Service - also by Mr. Berry - in conjunction with a Business Plan I wrote for an Econ class in college. I could have sat and read the entire thing, but didn't have the time ----- so I BOUGHT IT! :)Then I came across THIS title: Management Lessons From Mayo Clinic, a clinic "referenced" in the above-mentioned book. Mayo has been my family's clinic for over 30 years, and I can attest to the accolades bestowed upon this organization! In 30+ years, I have come in contact with only 2-3 employees I found unacceptable in the field of service! I'm thinking that's a near-impossible feat!So I found and bought this one, as well, right here on Amazon - my favorite site from which to make purchases.
Many services, including practice management, share common dynamics with healthcare services in general:- Intangible core benefit; it comes from a performance, and customers incur an expense rather than acquire tangible assets (except for outsourced billing),- High risk service. Under-performance carries severe consequential damages,- Labor- and skill-intensive performance, contributing to considerable variability between service providers,- Physical presence of the customer receiving the service, requiring time and place synchronization with service provider,- Perishable service. When the resources available to deliver the service are unused, the value that they might have created, perishes,- Customer demand for the service is unevenly distributed and sometimes urgent,- Diverse customer needs and preferences, requiring the service provider to maintain a portfolio of skills and resources,- Multiple resources contribute to the customer experience, necessitating coordination of their performances,- Complex service chain with numerous interdependent components,- Service reliability - accuracy and dependability - are essential for success. The key question for any manager is: "if our organization were to disappear overnight, would customers really miss us?" For Mayo Clinic, the answer is yes, and that's why it attracts and retains talented people and inspires their efforts. Mayo offers the court of last resort for many patients. A career at Mayo clinic provides a daily opportunity to apply their core values. The Mayo Clinic model is built on three core values: place the interests of the patient above all other interests, pool talent to create teams of specialists working together, and deliver clinical care with time-condensed efficiency. At Mayo Clinic, the core strategies and core values converge - the strategies are so embedded that they become core values. Its most impressive accomplishment is how well they execute these strategies for more than a century. In organizations that deliver consequential, complex, variable, and personal service, the performance is critically important. The brand comes as the by-product of consistent focus on the service experience of patients. Customers become marketers and the conveyors of information that can help those they know. A labor-intensive service brand can be only as good as the people creating the experience that forms brand meaning. The Mayo Clinic has created its brand through emphasis on operations. They created a world-class service organization we performing well for one customer at a time and relying EXCLUSIVELY on the word of mouth - for nearly a century, they had no marketing department. An astonishing 91 percent of patients praise the clinic to an average of 40 other patients and generates on average five new patients.Mayo Clinic brand heroes are the industrial engineers who design the service processes and the line employees who perform their services one patient at a time. They design their processes by paying a special attention to customer perception, by orchestrating the clues for quality. They understand that customers act as detectives continuously looking for clues in order to form an opinion about their experiences. For example, does a service experience make customer feel safe, confident, efficient, smart, respected. or worthy, or does it have the opposite effects? This book is required reading for anybody who wants to create and manage a service organization with a Mayo Clinic reputation.
I was a patient at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and could not believe how wonderful the hospital is to all of its patients. Read the book and I understand! Great read, and the stories are incredibly heartwarming. I am forever grateful and proud to have been cared for by such a wonderful team. The book is definitive and a model for how a hospital must be operated!
The subject, how to provide top quality health service and survive as a non profit organization for a hundred years is facinating and the book contains a detailed description of the Mayo Clinic, its core values and strategies. I have no practical knowledge when it comes to working for or being admitted to one of the clinics but I miss the story about the pitfalls, what is the biggesr challenges in such a gigantic structure based on a set of core values from the beginning of the last century ?
This book merely deals with health care delivery at Mayo Clinic, one of the best run HSOs worldwide. It examines intricate processes at various practices or product lines and they how are managed. It exposes a culture that is well understood by the employees and how that culture is vivid in the care for every patient. With that said, the material is applicable to any service organization. The concepts can be applied in delivering service to customers. For example, personable and customizable service is a key to retaining customers and scoring high on customer satisfaction surveys. Treating customers differently than competitors is what keeps those customers coming back and become a free advertisement to the organization. The book is well written and easy to understand.
Mayo Clinic is part of the American vernacular, and synonymous with excellence in health care. Did you ever wonder how the organization achieved such remarkable level of awareness inarguable brand associations? In Berry and Seltman's book, you'll learn that it had little to do with promotion, and everything to do with values. Preservation of the values of the Drs. Mayo is baked into the "product" of Mayo Clinic, which, of course, is a service. If you are in the service industry, then you know that product features are defined by the service experience, and the benefits are determined by customer satisfaction. Both are intangibles.Mayo Clinic has applied manufacturing process improvement (Six Sigma, LEAN, et al) to healthcare systems to improve the patient experience. For in the end, Mayo's management understands that the patient outcomes define product quality, and patient satisfaction is the promotion. With all the hoopla today surrounding social media and marketing, an interesting sidebar to this book is the realization that Mayo's brand was built entirely through social networks; patients travel around the world for treatment at the clinic, and return home to tell the tale to friends and family. Quite obviously, the majority of the stories told have been positive. This book helps us to understand why.

Review
"This book is a gift to all …. consumers looking for a way out of their addiction. Those of us (myself included) who know our excessive consumption is causing ecological and economic disasters should read Professor Moe-Lobeda's new book. It is the best one-volume analysis of our moral dilemma I know of and, even better, it suggests principles and practices to help deal with it." --Sallie McFague, Vancouver School of Theology"Cynthia Moe-Lobeda's Resisting Structural Evil: Love as Ecological and Economic Transformation takes the form of a powerful contribution to Christian ethics, but in fact it is also a major contribution to anyone in any religious or spiritual tradition who seeks to maintain both a commitment to God and to global healing and transformation. Easily accessible and charming in presentation, deep in its ability to confront difficult issues squarely and in a nuanced way, courageous in insisting that we see reality not only as it is but as it could be if we were willing to be "unrealistic" for a few moments, manifesting daring of thought combined with a pervasive humilitythis is a true classic of spiritual progressive consciousness, packed full of ideas that should be taught in every college and university and religious seminary, every church, synagogue, mosque and ashram!" --Rabbi Michael Lerner, Editor of Tikkun Magazine, Chair of The Network of Spiritual Progressives"This is a grand prophetic book motivated by love and focused on justicesocial justice, ecological justice, and dignity for ‘the least of these.’ Don't miss it!" --Cornel West, Union Theological Seminary

This book, while not an easy read, is a good compilation of source material, experience, and theological views on the challenges facing all of us, but particularly American Christians in the 21st century. Focusing on economic and ecological justice, weaving in questions where answers are not always clear, and challenging all of us to rethink how we view the (especially) non-human world in terms of justice and love, this book would make an excellent text for a Christian ethics class and a good resource for any thinking human person in the world today. I especially liked the practical application of feminist/womanist theology in helping us understand the need for empathy with our neighbors whom we (Americans) exploit and oppress.
Very dense, excellent treatment of Christian theology, ethics, and the current ecological crisis. I'm only about 70 pages into the book, and find it very engaging, challenging, and extremely appropriate given the negative impact of developed nations on the poor of the world and our Christian responsibilities, and ways to understand and address, the structural injustices elaborated in the book.
This book is the roadmap (sans the car) or maybe the blueprint to put humans on the way to "civilized", sustainable living w/ the rest of creation/existance. The book helps each unique individual sacrifice the short term (and deathly) hedonistic lifestyle, and make the transition to gain the long run and infinite "life", coexisting among the equally important other species and inanimate material world. Western society (but not everyone in the West) lives in a falsely satisfactory existence. The majority are suffering from cravings to build for themselves permanence where it does not nor cannot exist, and at the same time destroying life for all others. Moe-Lobeda leads us to the realities of the world/universe, and how we can find true satisfaction by living w/ all other and not living above all other. It certainly is not a dislike, but a limitation that the book focuses mainly on the enlightened Christian perspective. I have nothing (except a few horrendous events) against Christians. I am a Christian (and Jewish, and Muslim, and Buddhist, and trying to become Hindu). But no book could or should try to be everything to everyone.
Thoroughly documented. Compelling. This book just blew me out of the water. It challenges my complacency. I am shocked at what we are and continue to do. I plan to make some changes in my life.
This work is foundational for an understanding of global economic justice and ecological issues. It is written in a humane, accessible and realistic manner. I believe I will long consider it one of the most influential books for my worldview. I resonate with it in so many and such deep ways. I am very grateful to the author.
I love Cynthia's heart and passion for this topic. I will forever remember her definitions for Justice and for Neighbor-love. Sometimes she gets a little mystical and vague for me, but on the whole she is spot on regarding the evil innate in our mutually supportive politics and lifestyle.
The author's comes from a religious and ethical background and her holistic approach shows that because we are all connected on our fragile planet, everything we do affects everyone else. For that reason it is important to consider the meaning of "Love thy neighbor" and to think about the broadest definition of who our neighbor is. When we understand that even nature is our neighbor we begin to see that we can change our practices in order to help all our neighbors.
This is a challenging, yet hope-filled call to all people to consider the effects of our U.S. consumerist lifestyle on other peoples and on our planet. Personal stories of those made poor, insights into the global economic system and feminist theological reflection on our U.S. reality are accompanied by information about worldwide movements and organizations already working towards positive change in our world so that all may live.

I received this book today only to find out that the lettering in some pages washed off like if the printer ran out of ink. The entire book seems like if it was printed at a regular printing machine, i disregarded that detail, just to find out later that page 586 fell out of the book like if it was never attached to it, or glued to it, and i just opened this book for the first time because i received it today! I'm going to return this printed copy of the book and get the hardcover version.
WARNING! Do not buy the paperback version. After five weeks of gentle use--it never left my desk--pages began falling out. Not tearing out, but simply falling out, as if the binding glue had failed. Amazon, to their credit, allowed me to return the paperback copy past the normal 30 day limit. Thank you Amaz-ing-on. Still need the book--hopefully the hardcopy will be more durable.
This is another text book that is actually fun to read. The front contains basic scientific information about plants. Leaf structure and how it is defined, reproduction, flower structure, etc. The body of the book is species of plants and cultivars. There are not any color pictures or photographs. Merely line drawing for individual leaves and flowers. It is arranged in alphabetical order based on Latin name. There is cross reference in the back that has common names.I use this book all the time because I am always trying to identify a species of plant, or a cultivar within a species. Mostly for customers, but also myself. It is also quite helpful in determining what cultivars are likely to do well, and which ones have underperformed in the landscape (in the opinion of the author of course). The author frequently expresses his opinion, and he does so in an entertaining fashion that makes using this book fun. There are lists of what plants are quick references for what plants work well in different soil or moisture condition. What zone plants are suited to. Some indicate air pollution tolerance. There is a wealth of information in this publication. If you are an amateur looking for an easy identification guide, or something with great photos, this is not going to suit your needs. I would suggest:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0881924040/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_img_sol_15If you are a student that must buy this book for class....keep this book safe! If you work in the nursery or landscape industry and seriously love plants, this can be one of your best friends.
While I usually classify Dr. Dirr's books as additions to the basic gardening library, I have to include this one in the basic book section--one you should have. Most all of us have woody landscape plants and among us the knowledge of how to care for them is mixed. Having been associated with the Master Gardener Volunteer program in three states, I find this book to contain the answers to many relevant questions that presented to the call in volunteers.
excellent reference book. Just keep in mind that Dr. Dirr is coming from a Georgia climate perspective so keep that in mind. The book has all the most common woody landscaping plants.
The book is fantastic...it is extensive, very detailed and precise, the drawings are accurate and lovely. All in all, I'm very pleased with the book and am certain it will be very useful among my reference books. The bad things was that about the last fourth of the pages had a severe crease in them that made it hard to use for a long time. I put it under a large stack of books and used it from that weighted stack with much effort. It has straightened out a great deal, but is still not perfect. I needed it immediately or I would have refused to accept it, and returned it.
This was a "recommended" book for a horticulture class. I'm so glad I bought it. The information is presented in a friendly style, like you're sitting down for a cup of coffee with the author and he's telling you about the interesting plants he has seen and grown. Details of various cultivars make this a valuable reference that I'm sure I'll use frequently.
At first glance this book does not look like much next to the stack of glossy, color gardening books. Spend a half-hour with it and it's value becomes apparent. No photos but that doesn't hurt this book's usefulness at all. The drawings in this book are extremely helpful. I have an "Elm thing" that a relative was positive was an American Elm. I had my doubts since I think it was planted by bird droppings. I opened up the manual and looked at those line drawings and saw the new buds on Siberian Elm are spherical and the ones on American are pointed. The buds on my tree are round. A positive ID.Information on how plants do in California is rather sketchy but there are tidbits in this book you won't find anywhere else. This is no dry treatise: When Dirr gets on the subject of a plant he hates, it makes entertaining reading. Some of his commentary is thought provoking as well.I bought the hardcover. Someone mentioned the thin pages. At 1200 or so pages they need to be to save your back. The cover looks like it can be wiped off with a damp cloth and the binding is sewn, not glued. With reasonable care this book will last a long time.Should be on every gardener's shelf.

Review
Kathy Hudson s On Walnut Hill: The Evolution of a Garden, is not just a well-told tale of A.C. and Penney Hubbard s 46-year learning curve on a sunny, two-acre hillside on the outskirts of Baltimore. It tells and shows, with Roger Foley s eloquent photographs how two beginning gardeners, with three small children, rooted their lives in the steeply sloping land. First they planted those ubiquitous rows of red tulips and daffodils then later, sweeps of grasses and rare trees, as they embraced an entirely different aesthetic through the eyes and guiding hand of Kurt Bluemel. His nursery in nearby Baldwin was famed not only for its plants but also for his masterful sense of space and scale. The Hubbards square spaces gave way to curvilinear paths; masses of perennials and groundcovers began to weave themselves beneath layers of trees and shrubs; terraces shaped the old sledding hill; hidden paths descended gently down wide rocks into the woods. Now, grandchildren live next door, taking their own little path to the rock ledge pool. Any great garden changes with the seasons, and every hour of the day, but this one has changed the Hubbards and become their world. --Anne Raver, former garden columnist for The New York Times. There's just something about a good coffee table book the luscious photos, the poetic words, the feel of the thick, shiny pages. At a time of year when hostess gifts are in high demand, this chronicle of the Hubbard family's five-decade quest to turn their two-acre property in Ruxton [Maryland] into a garden might be just the ticket. This isn't just any garden, mind you, but a lush, pleasingly designed masterpiece that melds foliage and flowers with architectural elements such as rock walls and sculptures. But it's the Hubbards' story, paired with depictions of the garden throughout the year, that makes this book a pleasure for all season. --Gabriella Souza, Baltimore Magazine

From the Inside Flap
For more than four decades, passionate gardeners, A.C. and Penney Hubbard, collaborated with the renowned plantsman, the late Kurt Bluemel, to transform a hillside near Baltimore, Maryland, into a horticultural masterpiece. In On Walnut Hill: The Evolution of a Garden, writer Kathy Hudson chronicles the story of the garden and the Hubbard family in their garden. Award-winning landscape photographer Roger Foley brings to life the elegant garden as it changes over the course of a year — from a still and stately winter garden to its spring profusion, strong summer color, and final autumnal splendor. Foley’s exquisite photographs showcase the artistry, nuance, and horticultural diversity in the Hubbard garden. Guided by Bluemel’s genius for bringing life and movement to the landscape with his trademark grasses and perennials, the Hubbards transformed the two acres surrounding their 1937 Colonial Revival house into a world-class Eden. On Walnut Hill invites readers to accompany the Hubbards as they grow from weekend gardeners to respected horticulturalists amassing outstanding collections of conifers, acers, perennials, rare and unusual trees, and sculpture. Listed in the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens, the Hubbard garden has been featured in Baltimore Style, Baltimore magazine, The Baltimore Sun, Professional Builder & Remodeler, Better Homes and Gardens, and Southern Living. It has been included on numerous local and national tours of the Horticultural Society of Maryland, Ladew Topiary Gardens, The Garden Conservancy, The Garden Club of America, and the Perennial Plant Association. On Walnut Hill offers an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of a world-class garden. It is a story of passion, artistry, and, above all, a family’s love for the land on which they live.As Anne Raver, former garden columnist of The New York Times, says: "Any great garden changes with the seasons, and every hour of the day, but this one has changed the Hubbards and become their world."

not really about gardening. mostly a gossipy, family history. Even the beautiful, arty photos don't show much garden detail.
Kathy Hudson's On Walnut Hill: The Evolution of a Garden is one of those rare garden books that does far more than tell the story of a showcase garden. Hudson's spare prose, combined with award-winning landscape photographer Roger Foley's lush photos, paint a verbal and visual history of this spectacular garden, which utterly transformed a sunny hillside near Baltimore over the course of 46 years. It helped, of course, that the young couple who bought the house and grounds in 1969 -- and did all the work themselves for years -- was able, later, to fund what started as a dawn-to-dusk, weekend hobby into what ultimately became their life's passion and work.It also helped that early on they began working with a European garden designer who was one of the pioneers advocating the replacement of staid, static rectangular patches of lawn and flower beds with sumptuous curvilinear sweeps of perennial plantings and ornamental grasses.Designer Kurt Bluemel laid out an overarching plan for A.C. and Penney Hubbard's sunny, two-acre site: an evergreen background, a middle ground of shrubs like rhododendrons, viburnums and azaleas, and a foreground of annuals and perennials. Just as important as the plantings, however, were Bluemel's stunning hardscape plans -- the low, dry-laid stone walls that curved throughout the property, and his meandering pathways, large enough for two people to walk side by side, conversing.A rock-lined fountain wall with multiple cascades of water, the rough, wide stone stairs that curve and twist up the hilly site, the seemingly random but perfectly placed stone accent pieces -- all add to the tamed wildness of the garden's appearance. Novice gardeners -- like those who find themselves regularly moving new acquisitions until both plant and gardener are happy -- can take heart here: when Bluemel announced that a rock-lined pool would be sited where the Hubbards already had a stand of conifers, the trees were dug out, moved to a temporary holding bed, and re-planted after construction.Unlike most garden books, On Walnut Hill serves up a seven-season year that mirrors the actual stages of garden life: one winter, one autumn, but two springs (early and late), and three summers (early, midsummer, and late). Foley has chronicled each of those seven seasons in long, evocative photo essays. As testament to the strength of the Hubbards' garden as well as to Foley's photographic eye, each of the seven seasons delights and beguiles. Foley's winter photos -- the curve of a snow-covered dry-laid stone wall overlooking a distant valley; an Asian sculpture with a ruff of snow on a terrace wall; the riotous bark of a leafless, rust-colored paperbark maple -- are every bit as captivating as his spring and summer shots -- the glory of tiny white bleeding heart mingling with enormous Hosta "Big Daddy;" a granite column seemingly strangled by electric purple clematis trailing across a blue spruce; towering yellowed Allium "Mount Everest" rising out of a green sea of bottle brush Amsonia hubrectii. Each of Foley's seven photo essays is introduced by a prose poem in Hudson's lean style that clearly reflects decades of her own gardening life. One has to spend endless hours in endless gardens to understand how "After snowfall comes the deepest stillness of the year," or to describe those early spring miracles, "to see again ... coiled fern fronds and scrolled hosta leaves pushing through the earth."Perfect for giving at any time of the year, On Walnut Hill will drive winter-bound gardeners to their seed catalogues. All the rest of the year, they'll be driven outdoors, in hope, and brimming over with ideas.
I curled up one afternoon during the recent blizzard with a cup of tea and this book and was lost to the world for the next several hours. The photography is stunning and moves effortlessly between botanical studies of plants and portraits of the garden as a whole. Kathy Hudson's prose poems are lovely and I imagine I will reread them as the season the change for many years to come. The book tells the story of a family as well as the garden and it makes one want to start working on one's own garden immediately.I recommend this book to gardeners and lovers of gardens of all stripes, those who are always mucking about in the dirt and armchair gardeners alike. While the story is grounded in Baltimore and is delightful to read for those acquainted with the city, my aunt, who has no particular connection to Baltimore, also loved the book.
"On Walnut Hill" is a rare story of one family and the remarkable garden they created. Kathy Hudson beautifully narrates the passion and hard work devoted to a garden that was never "just a garden" - but rather has been the center of the Hubbard family's days, through the seasons of the year and the seasons of one family's full life with exquisite photographs by Roger Foley.
With Kathy Hudson’s almost painterly essays and Roger Foley’s striking images, On Walnut Hill will inspire gardeners of all kinds. Whether you’re planning to transform your entire property or simply tweak around the edges, this lovely book is full of ideas, shown in Foley’s award-winning photographs and told in Hudson’s elegant prose.
Gardening is personal. This book is the story of the intersection of people and place: a family, their intimate geography, a gifted plantsman. A garden is temporal. This book is a time machine, showing a space that developed over decades as well as seasons. It is still changing. With Kathy Hudson's prose and Roger Foley's photographs, this book is a treat that you will want to savor.
This book is well written and researched with stunning photographs. You can sit and read it in one sitting or dip into it here and there; it never gets old and I seem to find something new every I open the cover. I do not garden and possess very little gardening knowledge. Yet, I find it all interesting and not overly esoteric. Weaving in the family history makes it even more entertaining, and you certainly do not need to know the family personally to get a kick out of reading about them and their relationship to what is a truly unique spot. I gave away 12 of these as Christmas gifts! The presentation is so lovely that the book has wide appeal.
This is more than just a stunningly beautiful book. It's the story of a family who turn a suburban hillside into a lush landscape, the design and variety evolving over more than 40 year's care and effort. Kathy Hudson's telling is engaging and amusing, with insight into the personalities who created the garden giving an added dimension. This, plus lyrical description of the garden through the seasons.Steve Elkins
