This book was entertaining and moved along at a good pace. The only complaints I have about the book is that you can tell the book is written by someone who has NOT spent anytime in Punxsutawney:1. There is no multiplex theater in Punxsutawney. There is a community center that shows one movie on the weekend nights.2. There is no mall in Punxsutawney. The closest mall to Punxsutawney is 20+ miles away.3. There is no classes for Teens at the local Catholic school. So, teens she saw in school uniforms would have gone to the Christian school, not the Catholic school.4. Nobody, and I mean, NOBODY ever calls it Punx High. It is Punxsy High. Punx is not a shortened form for Punxsutawney that anybody uses.5. The old person's home in Punxsy does not have a movie theater, rec room, and arcade room.Otherwise, it's a cute story. If it wasn't for the fact that the main character repeats a day over and over like in the movie, Groundhog Day, this book could have been set in any small town.
This book started out really sweet, and continued in the same manner all the way through. As someone who was a teenager in the 80s and still loves all things 80s, especially the movies from that time period. Sixteen Candles and Weird Science, as well as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, were staples from my middle and high school years. The movies that I watched over and over. While I did watch The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, the first I enjoyed more when I got older, and the second, well, I'm not actually the biggest fan of that movie. So the fact that the main character in this book, Andie, isn't as thrilled with it either, won me over to her right away. Not to mention her thoughts on the prom dress that Molly Ringwald's character remade in the movie Pretty in Pink totally mirror my own. Of course the awkwardness of Andie's "meet-cute" with Colton, and Tom, is something that sounds like my kind of luck as well.I also am a fan of the movie Groundhog Day, and I loved that this one was a teen version. The references to movies that Andie pulls to try to help with her experiences is so me, and something I would do, or something my family would do. So to me, this was a perfect story. I liked how she learned that different cliques weren't always the way we stereotype them, and that she kind of started with a group that is almost always vilified, the cheerleaders. The fact that they were such a great bunch of girls really, and the whole Maya house thing, that was awesome! I enjoyed how she seemed to try different groups at first. When she figured out that she wasn't maybe meant to be what she'd originally wanted, or that was at least not the way to get out of her time loop, she went to the goths. And I love that she chose a costume from Beetlejuice! Again, the movie nerd in me loved it. In theh end, the way that she finally ended up breaking the cycle was perfect. It wasn't too easy, or simple, and it took a lot to really get it the right way. A lot of things that she thought that didn't work out the way she planned and led into the perfect night, or ending you might say.Now, I do wonder if really she would have caught on and tried for a different type of ending earlier, before going with the goths, but if she had, that would have led to a much shorter story, or at least she wouldn't have learned quite all that she did about the different groups. That leads me to another point. I loved how she ended up realizing that the group of people who didn't quite fit into any group, was just as bad, or worse at times, at stereotyping the others. I've seen that. The people that felt picked on, but all I ever saw was them making fun of, or picking on the very people that they said acted that way to them.I really hope or guess I could say that I would LOVE to see this as a movie. If only John Hughes was still around, because he'd be perfect to make this one.
A mash-up of Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, and Groundhog Day? Yes, please! When I saw the title of this book, I knew I had to read it, but I was skeptical that it could be done successfully. I'm soooo glad I was wrong! I loved everything about Pretty in Punxsutawney. Andie is a great character with a perfect character arc. She starts out a little nerdy and shy, but hopeful that she can get that perfect first kiss from Colton, once he realizes they are meant to be, of course. When her first day of school goes horribly wrong, however, Andie despairs of ever getting a boyfriend. Too bad she gets to re-do that first day over and over, sometimes okay, sometimes awful, but never getting the guy of her dreams. So Andie makes it her mission to do some good, and overturn the heirarchy of cliques that make up her new high school. Along the way she learns a lot about herself, about love, and about what is really important.

I often browse the nonfiction section (or the customers also bought lists) in search of new things to learn about. In the process of this, I have read boring books, misleading/inaccurate/biased books, books about off-the-wall/niche topics, and interesting books that have allowed me to learn about a topic I likely never would have touched otherwise. The Walkable City is probably the best book I have ever found as a result of this browsing.A relatively short but insightful book written by an experienced architect, The Walkable City lays out an evidence based case for having a walkable and bikeable downtown area that is illustrated throughout with explanations of case studies and anecdotal examples. Everything is fully explained (both a basic 'this is what _____ means' as well as 'these are the implications of ____'), which - having no knowledge of civil engineering or city planning - I very much appreciated. But, what I think really makes the book (especially as a learning tool for a general audience) is the inclusion of Speck's dry and admittedly sarcastic humor. I found it hilarious and a good counterbalance to heavier topics (such as dry jokes about traffic engineers during a section on pedestrian deaths due to traffic behavior as a result road construction). Overall, I am very pleased to have stumbled across The Walkable City and it is a book that I would be happy to reccomend.
I bought this book to help support an independent study project I needed to complete for a college-level class designed around Edward Glaeser's "Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier." I knew the book would help me develop a strong and effective PowerPoint lecture for the class on my topic of walkable cities, but I had no idea how delightful it would be to read this book straight through from beginning to end as a form of pleasure. Nor did I realize how much I would learn overall about the basics of urban design. Although this book is focused on how to make cities more walkable, it really served the purpose of being an engaging introduction to the whole field of urban and city planning.After reading Speck's book, I now see my own lovely city and the many thousands that I've visited here and abroad over my life in a completely new light. This book gives me a context within which to understand why certain cities attract me and others do not. It is as if I now have a language to clearly understand cities for the first time. Honestly, you know how good it feels when you get eyeglasses for the first time and see what the world really looks like? Well, that's what this book did for me. I now see cities in a whole new light.I only wish at this book could be read by my mayor, all my city councilmen, all the citizens on our planning commission, and all the citizens in my community that have the power to vote on our city's major land use initiatives.This book is getting almost consistent five-star ratings. I can do little more than join in and whole-heartedly agree.
A truly fascinating book, Speck makes you question how the United States moved so far away from the more ideal reality of walkability. Not only does Speck succeed in making the case for walkability, he provides a clear road plan for how streets can be reclaimed and thus cities made to be safer, healthier, more vibrant and ultimately more equitable places for all Americans. The level of research and time that was put into this book shows and the comprehensive nature speaks volumes about the author and his drive to improve life in American cities. A must read for all people interested in urban planning, public health, economics, or any other subject relating to public life.
This was a different book for me to read–one about urban planning. As the title implies, the author’s basic proposition is that large urban areas are most able to thrive if they are “walkableâ€. Walkability is much more than providing good spaces for pedestrians, it also stresses that people, and not autos, need to be the focus of our cities. (He does apply his theories to smaller cities, but my take is that most of his suggestions are really viable only in large metropolitan areas.) The book is full of information about planning, architecture, traffic engineers, and many other subjects. Like many non-fiction work, the author seems to have engaged in exhaustive research. Sometimes such exhaustive work makes for exhausting reading, and I did find that true at times. Indeed, this could be used almost as a supplemental text for educators or planners. Walkability, as I read the book, requires some level of mass transit to in essence “create†pedestrians in the urban core. Not that no one can drive, but the more people who don’t, the more people who are on the urban streets. “Walkability explains how, to be favored, a walk has to satisfy four main conditions: it must be useful, safe, comfortable and interesting.†These terms are themselves quite subjective, but the author defines useful to mean that “***most aspects of life are located close at hand and organized in a way that walking serves them wellâ€. Safe means “***that the street has been designed to give pedestrians a fighting chance against being hit by automobiles†. Comfortable means that “***buildings and landscapes shape urban streets into ‘outdoor living rooms’â€, and interesting means “***that sidewalks are lined by unique buildings with friendly faces and that signs of humanity abound.†An example he gives of a city that lacks almost all technical aspects of walkability–good sidewalks, safe traffic, etc- but is wonderfully walkable because of being so interesting, is Rome. Anyone who has been there can appreciate the example. His basic premise is that walkablilty attracts creative people to our cities, enhancing both the culture and the economy, including the increased property values in walkable cities, as well as healthy citizens who walk or ride bikes more often. (As an aside, the author speaks a lot of Portland, Oregon-50 miles north of me-, and its commitment to walkability.) Despite the ascribed benefits of walkability, the author posits that over the last 60 years, our country has made the automobile the master of the urban environment–and the environment in general. To create, or perhaps restore walkability, the car has to relegated to its position of servant rather than master. This can be done in many ways, including getting the parking issues right, and to the benefit of pedestrians. He also notes, as mentioned above, that walkable cities must have transit. Indeed, he points out that one need only trace the relative investment in highways versus transit in American and Canadian cities to see why the latter, who invested less in highways, have more walkable, and to the author, more vibrant cities. The author goes into detail abut a great many subjects, but I will only explore one–traffic engineers. He does have a distinct bias against traffic engineers, saying most are trained to solve traffic problems, and thus the first step, at least for them, in solving every urban problem is to conduct a traffic study–usually aimed at how to better move traffic. He feels such studies are flawed for three reasons. First the computer models are flawed because, like all computer models they are only as good as the input; second, traffic studies are typically performed by firms that do traffic engineering; and third, traffic studies almost never consider what the author calls “induced demandâ€. The last consideration is very interesting, for the author, supported by studies, postulates that induced demand reflects the fact that increasing the supply of roadways lowers the “time cost†of driving, causing more people to drive, obliterating any reductions in congestion. In essence, investments in road capacity expansion do not ease congestion, but just add more cars to the highway. This is at first a bit counterintuitive, but, with a second thought, has a logical ring. If induced demand is a viable theory, then it has a doubly negative effect. It not only fails to reduce congestion, it adds more cars into the mix, reducing the possibility for walkability. So is congestion good? Contrary as it sounds, the answer might be “yesâ€. Indeed, the author notes that 7 of the 10 cities ranked worst for traffic also had “***excellent public transportation and a vast collection of walkable neighborhoodsâ€. (The 3 that did not were Dallas, Houston and Atlanta.) Also, if induced demand is correct, why bother with spending fortunes to expand highways if you will end up with congestion anyway. I fund the whole “induced demand†scenario quite thought provoking. This is not a “beach bookâ€, or any type of “relaxing readâ€. It’s full of facts, theories and a bit of technical jargon. It is also quite informative and enlightening if one is interested specifically in urban planning, or more generally in reducing automobiles, increasing pleasant walkable urban environments, and making our cities more enjoyable for their residents.

I highly recommend reading this book. Jeff leaves out all the fluff and guides you on how to effectively use LinkedIn as a marketing platform. He guided me on how to set up an effective profile and identifying my niche to target. Once this was done, by applying his tested and proven strategy within the first week I already had three leads and a meeting scheduled the following week. I have struggled with trying to apply other systems before, but this one is working out with really good results.
Jeff's book provided helpful insights. I am very please to have read it. I am excited about forthcoming marketing adventures.
Jeff has a straight-forward, conversational writing style that makes it easy to follow along with his tips. I’m looking forward to putting them into action on my LinkedIn profile.

As an autistic adult, I pre-ordered NeuroTribes with great excitement and read it eagerly when it arrived. I think this is an important book that sheds much needed light on the history of autism research, and on the pitfalls of autism parenting culture, and gives some indication of the direction of autistic culture. However, I'm holding back on a fifth star because I felt that he could have gone much further in clarifying that autistic people do come in a great variety of personalities, abilities and disabilities; that the Kanner's vs Asperger's distinction is in fact meaningless; and most importantly that autistic people do not need to achieve great things to be valuable as human beings.
Steve Silberman is a journalist and writer for WIRED magazine who has written many readable stories on medicine and human health. In this book he brings many years of reporting and training to delve upon one of the most prominent health issues of our time – autism.Silberman’s book is rich in both human and scientific detail and shines in three aspects. Firstly, he meticulously traces the history of autism and the lives of the neurologists, psychologists and doctors who chased its elusive identity. He focuses especially on two psychologists, Leo Kanner in the United States and Hans Asperger in Nazi-controlled Vienna who identified the syndrome and pioneered its study through observations on hundreds of cases. Asperger was the first one to identify a variety of signs and symptoms that contribute to what we now call autism spectrum disorder, and his studies were expansive and nuanced. Silberman’s account of both the foibles and the triumphs of these two individuals is fascinating: while Kanner’s fault was in assigning the blame for autism to parents (he coined the phrase "refrigerator mother") and focusing on children, Asperger identified mostly high-functioning autistic savants in his publications for a chilling reason – so that the lower functioning cases could avoid the ghastly fate met by victims of the Nazis’ euthanasia program which aimed at eliminating “mentally feeble†individuals. Both Kenner and Asperger meant well, and in Asperger’s case his withholding of the identities of autistic people literally meant the difference between life and death.And yet as Silberman so adeptly demonstrates, this was one of those cases where the intentions of humane and well-meaning researchers actually caused harm to public perceptions of the syndrome. Kanner and Asperger’s story is an instructive lesson in both the vagaries of scientific discovery and human nature and the sometimes unfortunate intersection of science with politics. The selective reporting of high-functioning patients in case of Asperger and children in case of Kanner led to a massive underreporting of autistic cases and the creation of a guilt complex among parents. It also led to a delay in the recognition of autism as a spectrum of disorders (Autism Spectrum Disorders) rather than a narrowly defined condition. It wasn't until 1981 that English researcher Lorna Wing finally publicized Asperger's wide ranging observations; and it wasn't until 1991 before German researcher Uta Frith finally translated his work.Encouraged by Wing's work, when the diagnostic manual DSM-III-R finally classified autism as a widespread and bonafide syndrome with a textured and wide-ranging spread of symptoms and issues, Kanner and Asperger’s inadvertent underreporting of cases led everyone to believe that there was a sudden ‘epidemic’ of autism, a belief that triggered even more soul-searching and the assignment of cause and effect to all kinds of environmental variables including vaccines. Much of the media with its emphasis on sensationalism and simplistic explanations at the expense of subtlety and complexity did not help matters, although ironically as Silberman tells us, it was a movie - "Rainman" - that brought a lot of public attention to autism. It is in the second half of the book that Silberman sternly clamps down on fraudulent claims of connections between autism and vaccination, including the retracted work published by Andrew Wakefield.Finally, Silberman’s detailed account draws up wonderful and sometimes very moving portraits of families and individuals affected by autism. Also included are capsule portraits of famous people with autism and Asperger's syndrome like Nikola Tesla and Temple Grandin. Silberman makes it clear that such people defy easy classification, and we do them and ourselves a disservice when we stereotype and bin them into discrete categories. He interviews hundreds of people who are stricken by the syndrome and tells us the stories of both adults and children who first struggled to cope with the disease and then found solace in meeting similar people and connecting with support networks. He also profiles families from a remarkably wide cross-section of society – from people living below the poverty line to wealthy California families - who are convinced by unverified connections between the environment and autism. Silberman does not agree with them, but he empathizes with their concerns and tries to understand them. Fortunately the stigma associated with autism spectrum disorders is gradually giving way to a more subtle understanding, but as Silberman indicates there is still a long way to go. As the title puts it, his plea is for a world that appreciates neurodiversity; the fact that even people regarded as psychologically different can have very important and valuable perspectives to offer.If I had some minor gripes with the book, they were with the sometimes long-winded digressions on the lives of autism researchers and patients and the relative lack of discussion of cutting-edge biomedical and neurological research on the topic, including work from genomics and drug discovery. But these are minor gripes. Silberman has painted a rich, empathetic portrait of a devastating, baffling but ultimately comprehensible disorder and its history which we all owe ourselves to appreciate. Because ultimately, as the central message of this book reveals, the cure for autism is in understanding and empathy. The cure lies in human nature itself.
I per-ordered this book a few months ago and last week also ordered the Kindle version. My kindle version was delivered promptly this morning and I've been reading it since. I have a paperback version that is on it's way to be delivered today so I can share a copy with my husband and my doctor. Thus far this book promises to be what I had hoped it would be, another opportunity to understand myself better, and an opportunity to help others understand those of us on the Spectrum. I was diagnosed with Asperger's last year at the age of 53. Finally, after all of these years, I continue to understand that I am not broken, or in need of repair, just simply different. Thank you Mr. Silberman for your dedication to this topic and for writing what promises to be a very helpful book for the Neurodiverse and Neurotypical world.
I teach courses in disability studies at Davidson College, and I found this book amazing on several levels. First, it's just beautifully written, opening with the story of an eighteenth-century scientist and framing his story as an autism narrative. What that does, however, is suggest from the beginning the visionary and different quality of this book: it is about claiming a history for autism, and for autistic people as a community. It situates the history of autism within medical history, but also--and critically--within social history. And there is some critical history to be foregrounded, such as the idea that Hans Asperger's ideas laid an important basis for accepting autism as a kind of neurodiversity--itself an even more important notion when we remember, as Silberman reminds us, that Asperger was doing this against the tide of eugenicist thinking perpetrated by Nazism and used to justify genocide. Silberman's book interweaves stories of autistic people and their familiies throughout history, and empathetically but clearly shows why the emphasis on cure has had such damaging effects. Instead, his work encourages us to understand disability as difference, and autism as a source of creativity and neurodiversity that our modern world would be a different--and lesser--place without. It's important to note that he does not romanticize how difficult things can be for autistic people and caregivers. But as he points out, that has so much more to do with lack of social supports and resources than it does with the actual embodiments of autistic people. The emphasis on cure has cost us so much--what could an emphasis on embracing neurodiversity bring us as a society, instead? This is what we disability studies scholars call "disability gain," and this book invites us to imagine it beautifully. I found it moving, smart, engaging, sensitive, forthright, and a critical work of disability history and justice. It's refreshing to see a work that reminds us that disability is about human variation--not personal "tragedy"--and that cure is not always the ideal, despite our society's emphasis on normalcy.
